Governor Abercrombie helped to open the Faith Action for Community Equality (FACE) Equity Summit. Workshops at the summit covered immigration reform, clean elections, driver’s license test prep, Hawaii Needs a Raise, building a sustainable energy future, and aging and long term care.
Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE), is a faith-based grassroots organization in Hawaii founded in 1996. FACE grew out of a sponsoring committee established in the mid-1990s with the assistance of the Center for Community Change. In November 2008 FACE became a statewide organization when our Maui chapter was founded. We currently have a membership base of 27 institutions on Oahu, 24 on Maui, and one statewide institution. Combined on both islands, we are made up of 38 churches, a Buddhist temple, 2 Jewish congregations, 10 community groups and non-profit organizations, and one labor union. FACE’s membership reflects the cultural and socio-economic diversity of our community.
FACE exists to allow its members to live out their common, faith-based values by engaging in actions that challenge the systems that perpetuate poverty and injustice. They balance social, economic and community activity with a deep spiritual commitment. Their spiritual centeredness empowers them to return hope and love to the public arena.

Esperanza Community Services was founded by Guadalupe Reyes in 1969 as a school for children whose learning needs were not met in traditional classrooms. It now provides an alternate school for more than 60 full-time students ranging from kindergarten to 22-years-old with developmental disabilities, as well as services for around 70 adults, including in-home and at group homes in the neighborhood. The center is predominantly housed in the former St. Columbkille Catholic School at 520 N. Marshfield Ave. Since Esperanza moved into the structure in the 1970s, it has received few upgrades and major repairs. A recently received $585,230 grant will allow for renovation to commence this fall, coordinating with the ongoing school year with an estimated completion by 2024.
Organized in 1859, St. Columbkille Church was located at 1638 W. Grand Ave. In 1899, the Sisters of Providence took charge when the Holy Cross Brothers withdrew and Father Dunne invited the sisters to take charge of the boys’ school. In 1907, the sisters also took charge of the girls’ school due to the withdrawal of the Sisters of Charity. Boys and girls were in separate rooms. The grammar school for the girls developed into a full eight grades and a commercial high school. Because of the lack of available sisters, the grammar school closed in 1971. The commercial school closed in 1969. The church, since demolished, closed in 1975.
