WASHINGTON D.C., USA
Washington DC (Tuesday, April 30, 2019) - At the Grand African Run launch press conference today, the organizers announced that the inaugural mass-participation road race will take place on the 21st of July 2019 during African week of celebration. The event is organized by Nova Connections (non-profit organization), under the auspices of the African Union Representational Mission to the United States and in partnership with DC Mayor Office on African Affairs.
The event comprises the main 5km race as well as a 1K run for children aged under 11. Thousands of runners are expected to take part at the scenic course of Anacostia River walk with the race starting and finishing at the Yards Park. A number of African’s top athletes will attend the event as guests and participants. Registration for the event opens online on May 1st from the organizers website africanrun.com.
The launch is attended by African Union Mission to the US, the DC mayor office, athletes, different African diaspora-focused organizations and the media. On her Opening remarks, the Ambassador of the African Union Mission, Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao, stated that the event is likely to be one of the highlights of African Diaspora celebration in July. According to Her Excellency, the project is a reflection of the Africa we all Want based on the Agenda 2063’s Aspirations. It is a new initiative that aims to connect the African diaspora in North America through the running sport and gather the diaspora to celebrate the beautiful African culture.
Explaining the importance of the event, the Director of the DC Mayor Office on African Affairs Mr. Mamadou Samba emphasized on the value of the event in highlighting the African diaspora’s positive contribution to their communities in the United States and to their home continent of Africa.
Director of the event and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nova Connections, Dr Gashaw Abeza, in his part stated that Grand African Run is rooted in the value that the sport of running has for millions across the continent of Africa. And, a running event will be an ideal platform to connect the diaspora and tell positive stories of Africa. For this, he added, the event is much more than a race and is organized under the motto of ‘The Africa We Want’ ‘Better Together’.

There are many ways of telling the rest of the world you love/like one another. This picture illustrates a not so common way of doing it, at least not in Bruges. In the centre of the city, close to the market place, there is a big square. You can find there quite some park benches, allowing people to have a rest. One of those benches has clearly 2 names mentioned: Jimmy and Stephanie, a boy and a girl. The 'tjeuh' you find at the end of the boy's name, denotes a diminutive for the name.

"Spirit Communication Device
by Inventor Gary Hawkins
Any deviation between the two electrical charges would cause the center needle to move thus hopefully indicating contact on the other side. Built in the early 90's following Thomas Alva Edison's attempts at communicating with spirits by building a device in which any slight interruption in an electrical device could be recorded."
