The Praça do Comércio (Commerce Plaza) is a large, harbor-facing plaza, one of the largest in Portugal.
"Urban development of the banks of the Tagus River was active in the early 16th century, when King Manuel I built a new royal residence, the Ribeira Palace, by the river and outside the city walls. The area was further developed with the building of a port, shipbuilding facilities and other administrative buildings that regulated the commerce between Portugal and other parts of Europe and its colonies in Africa, Asia and the Americas.
On 1 November 1755, during the reign of King José I, a great earthquake followed by a tsunami and fire destroyed most of Lisbon, including the Ribeira Palace and other buildings by the river. José I's Prime Minister, the Marquis of Pombal, coordinated a massive rebuilding effort led by Portuguese architect Eugénio dos Santos. He designed a large, rectangular square in the shape of a "U", open towards the Tagus. The buildings have galleries on their ground floors, and the arms of the "U" end in two large towers, reminiscent of the monumental tower of the destroyed Ribeira Palace, still vivid in the architectural memory of the city. His plan was realized almost completely, although decorative details were changed and the east tower of the square and the Augusta Street Arch were only finished in the 19th century. This triumphal arch was designed by the Portuguese architect Santos de Carvalho and was completed in 1873. The top section includes statues representing important Portuguese figures such as Vasco da Gama and the Marquis of Pombal.
The square was named Praça do Comércio, the Square of Commerce, to indicate its new function in the economy of Lisbon. The symmetrical buildings of the square were filled with government bureau regulating customs and port activities. The centerpiece of the ensemble was an elaborate equestrian statue of King José I in the center of the square. This bronze statue was the first monumental statue dedicated to a king in Lisbon.

In November 1987, and at a moments' notice, Aberdeen College of Commerce (also known as the College of Comedy) was evacuated. Hundreds of students were hurried from the building, never to return. Structural reports had indicated that this piece of modernism was in immanent danger of collapse. It didn't; it was demolished and the site became prime building land. Students were moved to various sites elsewher with an area out at the Bridge of Don Barracks becoming first choice alternative.

A friendly store owner smiles to me. He is making a victory sign just out of view from below the counter. This instersting store sells a variety of doodads like fridge magnets, figurines etc. His specialty howver seems to be istikana, or traditional Turkish tea cups, scores of which can be seen on the shelves inside his store. He also seems to sell spouted jars.
Representatives from your Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce and the chamber’s committee, Fort Polk Progress, traveled recently to Washington D.C. in order to further the development of Vernon Parish and the parish’s ability to better support JRTC and Fort Polk . It is the mission of Fort Polk Progress to increase the viability and vitality of Fort Polk for years to come. Ensuring the future of growing missions benefits the region and opens future opportunities for longtime and desired growth of high tech, installation and maintenance support, and other industries which contribute to the employment base and quality of life in the Fort Polk community.
In ongoing efforts to educate Louisiana elected officials and to deliver Fort Polk Progress’ message directly to industry specific groups, the group met with several elected officials on the hill during their visit and received briefings at the Pentagon about specific challenges and projects that may impact the Vernon Parish and Central Louisiana region. Meetings were held “On the Hill” with Louisiana Congressman Rodney Alexander, Louisiana Congressman John Fleming, and Louisiana Senator David Vitter. At the Pentagon Army briefings were heard specifically about Fort Polk ’s current status and future projects. Briefings were from BG James Boozer Director of Operations Army Chief of Installation Management, Keith King, Jackie Anthony, and Lorna DeLay Housing and Privatization. These briefings included announcements regarding $41 million in ten new projects and the Fort Polk Commissary was recently moved from the eleventh slot in priority to the second slot in ranking of priority for possible facility replacement.
