Your Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce Annual Christmas parade rolled through historic downtown Leesville recently. The community turned out by the thousands and there was no shortage of candy and Christmas cheer. With almost 90 entries, the 2009 parade was met withy rave reviews. Citizens on hand commented that it was one of the best parades in recent memory.
The 2009 Grand Marshall, Leesville Mayor Betty Westerchil, kicked off the festivities with the help of the Fort Polk/JRTC Color Guard and Polk Commander BG James Yarbrough. The 83rd Chemical Company Commander was also on hand to support this community and brought along some interesting military vehicles for parade-goers to enjoy. The support from Fort Polk continued with the entry of 162nd infantry heavy vehicles.
As the parade rolled past the Vernon Parish Police Jury office they were announced to the attendees and the volunteer judges. Based on creativity, Christmas spirit and the degree of work, the judges chose winners for each category and chose a winner for best float overall. Santa Claus rode down 3rd Street marking the end of the annual event. Attendees who followed him were greeted by the announcement of the winners of the cash prizes awarded by the stage sponsor, Navy Federal Credit Union. Navy Federal Manager, Kate Safstrom alongside Sammy the Sea Otter, and the staff of the Leesville Fort Polk branch drew tickets to determine which lucky patrons would go home with cash in hand. $600 in cash prizes were awarded to the holders of drawn tickets.
For the category of Automobiles, The Neal Family took home the prize with their entry in loving memory of Kevin Neal. The category of Marching Units/Drill Teams went to a repeat winner, The Interdenominational Church of Faith for their spirited performance. Galilee Baptist Church took home the prize for the category of Churches/Civic Clubs for their festive and musical float. The winner chosen for the Commercial category was Leesville Residential & Employment Services. This is a proud second consecutive win for Leesville Residential. Leesville Junior High JAG claimed the win for the best School Organization/Club category. The best Marching Band category win was clenched by the Leesville High School Band with an energetic performance.
The Grand Marshall Award for best overall float was presented by 2009 Grand Marshall, Leesville Mayor Betty Westerchil. The winner for this category cemented themselves as master float craftsman. The Antioch Baptist Church Puppet Team of Leesville has taken home the Grand Marshall for the second consecutive year. Antioch Baptist has previously claimed the prize in the Churches/Civic Club category as well proving that they are stiff competition for many years to come.

Now, e-commerce websites have given a new image to a shopping industry, and it becomes easily possible for people to purchase things online from the comfort of their home.
More info:
Some men my age purchase artwork for their homes at Sothebys. I find that the cultural works and artifacts for sale at a comicon are far closer to my tastes.
Viz this great show poster by Phil Noto. I take some small pleasure in a piece of art on my wall that represents an intersection between two people or things whose work I love. My David Bowie concert promo poster (pulled from the side of a building outside Macworld Expo) is another example.
Phil's art style has familiar notes from classic magazine illustration but he's clearly taken it into his own, modern direction. I've been an avid fan for about a decade, when his art started showing up in art discussion boards.

In November 1987, and at a moments' notice, Aberdeen College of Commerce (also known as the College of Comedy) was evacuated. Hundreds of stidents were hurried from the building, never to return. Structural reports had indicated that this piece of modernism was in immanent danger of collapse. It didn't; it was demolished and the site became prime building land. Students were moved to various sites elsewher with an area out at the Bridge of Don Barracks becoming first choice alternative.

The statue that adorns the front roof of Grand Central Terminal and faces south is 48 feet high and weighs in at 1500 tons. On the left sits Hercules, representing physical strength; on the right is Minerva, goddess of wisdom and protector of cities; featured at the center is Mercury, god of travel and commerce.
This sculptural grouping was considered the largest of its kind when it was built in 1914. Perhaps even more impressive than the statue is that clock. At 13 feet in diameter the clock still is the largest example of Tiffany glass in the world. During the 100th anniversary, in Inaccessible New York: Behind The Scenes At Grand Central Terminal, WCBS offered a backstage tour that seems “like something out of the movie ‘Hugo.’”
“Transportation” or alternatively “The Glory of Commerce” is said to represent the wisdom, speed and strength of Grand Central and the midtown neighborhood. Apparently the French sculptor who designed the work was not very impressed by this wisdom, speed and strength of the neighborhood. French artist Jules-Alexis Coutan refused to come to the United States to oversee the construction of his project. When asked why, his reply was “I fear some of your [American] architecture would distress me.”
So the sculpture was constructed locally under long distance supervision. William Bradley and Son of Long Island City, Queens took seven years to construct Coutan’s massive sculpture of the Greek Gods out of the same Bedford limestone as the façade of Grand Central Terminal.

The ROXAS ISABELA TODAY!!! BRAVO ROXASINOS & ROXASINAS, BRAVO ISABELINO!!!
Roxas is a first class municipality in the province of Isabela, Philippines. According to the latest census, it has a population of 53,461 people in 9,896 households.
It is currently one of the fast-growing towns in Isabela. It is the center of business and commerce in the Mallig Region. It is envisioned to be a city in the next few years.
Transportation
In terms of transportation, Roxas has the most number of bus and jeepney terminals compared to any other town in the region. Bus companies such as Victory Liner., Northern Luzon Bus Corporation (NELBUSCO), AJA Transport, Florida, Royal Eagle and Auto Bus have services bound to other parts of the province, Tarlac, Pampanga, Ilocos, Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, and Manila. Transportation within the town is mainly by tricycles, which are basically motorcycles with cabs attached to them. There are also many vans which are used as a means of transportation from Roxas to other parts of the province. Many buses also pass through Roxas because they find it as a highly-economized town where they can get a lot of passengers. Some of these buses are Victory Liner, Ballesteros Bus Line Corporation(BBLC), Dagupan Bus Corporation Incorporated, DALIN, Lizardo Trans(GL), GMW Transportation, Maribel(a sister company of BBLC), Rosalinda, DOLBO Transportation and Agustin Bus.
[edit] Business
As of December 2007, Roxas is the most progressive town in Mallig Region. It has the most number of banks such as Banco de Oro, Philippine National Bank, Landbank of the Philippines, Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company, Banco Agricola, Inc., Mallig Plains Rural Bank and other non-major banks. It also has two locally famous malls - PowerMall (the first to install an escalator in the region), and GEMS Shopping Center. It also has two radio station named as WIN FM 107.5 "Nagimas sen", and WER ROCK 104.10 FM. Psalms Cable, Inc. is the only cable TV in the whole town which extends its coverage to some of Roxas's neighboring towns - Burgos and San Manuel. It also provides the neighboring towns of Isabela all necessary needs of a human to live. Roxas has a very wide and huge market, so businessmen have their chance to build and earn a lot of money immediately.
Due to a continuing widespread influence of GMA Network, Roxas has been chosen as the future site for GMA Network Cagayan Valley once it will be formally declared as a city.
[edit] Healthcare
It is considered as the center of health services in Mallig Region. It has numerous primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals. Major hospitals include Manuel A. Roxas District Hospital (MARDH), Soller Medical Clinic, Dumlao Hospital, Yumena Medical Center and Dayos Hospital. It also houses some specialization clinics, such as Sambilay Maternity Surgical and Medical Clinic, Purugganan Children's Clinic and Capuccino EENT Clinic. Dental clinics and skin clinics are also available. Moreover, health centers are also available in barangays outside the town proper.
Infrastructure Development
Over the past two years, when Dr. Harry G. Soller took the helms of government as its Municipal Mayor, Roxas has seen an unprecedented pace in its infrastructure development. The local government, in cooperation with Governor Grace Padaca and Congressman Edwin Uy, has concreted 20 kilometers of roads, more or less, in the town proper as well as in the barangays. As of march 2010, at least 10 kilometers of roads are programmed to be concreted. Moreover, Roxas' public places, and parks have been greatly improved. New Parks include the Barangay Park, which features 26 nipa huts put up by each of the barangays of Roxas; the Roxas Municipal Park and Freedom Stage, which features a clean comfort room, a Pasalubong Center, a Center Gazeebo with a beautifully designed fountain, and other park amenities; the Forest Park in front of the municipal hall; the Binibining Roxas Park; the Rizal Park; and the newly improved Children's Park.
Other infrastructure projects include the renovation of the municipal hall, the construction of a new module in the public market, the new vegetable trading post (Bagsakan Center), numeorus folld control projects, road widening projects, and many others.
Politics
Politics has been one of the local prominent issues. Dr. Harry G. Soller is presently the mayor of Roxas, defeating Benito Calderon who had been the mayor of Roxas for three terms. During the elections, political upheavals concerned the local residents since Dr. Soller won by a margin of just 200 votes. The current representative is Atty. Edwin C. Uy, who is in his third term. He won against Benedict Calderon, the son of Benito Calderon, and was also the incumbent mayor of Roxas that time. Congressman Edwin Uy is rumored to run for governor in 2010. Edwin Uy is now running as Vice Governor in tandem with Grace Padaca, the incumbent provincial governor.
Education
Public and private schools serve the people of Roxas and other neighboring towns. It has a number of public elementary schools, three public high schools, namely Roxas National High School, Lanting National High School and Munoz National High School, the same through with the Monico Rarama National High School.
