Description: Adult male Superb Fairy-wrens are among the most brightly coloured of the species, especially during the breeding season. They have rich blue and black plumage above and on the throat. The belly is grey-white and the bill is black. Females and young birds are mostly brown above with a dull red-orange area around the eye and a brown bill. Females have a pale greenish gloss, absent in young birds, on the otherwise brown tail. The legs are brown in both sexes. Males from further inland and in the south-west of the range have more blue on the back and underparts.

Similar species: Several other species of fairy-wren are found in Australia. The males of each species are quite distinct, but the females and young birds are often difficult to separate. Of the species that overlap in range with the Superb Fairy-wren, the female White-winged Fairy-wren Malurus leucopterus and Red-backed Fairy-wren M. melanocephalus lacks the chestnut colour around the eye, while the female Variegated Fairy-wren M. lamberti has a dull grey-blue wash. Both the Superb and White-winged Fairy-wrens are similar in size. The Variegated Fairy-wren is slightly larger in size and has a longer tail.

Distribution: Superb Fairy-wrens are found south of the Tropic of Capricorn through eastern Australia and Tasmania to the south-eastern corner of South Australia.

Habitat: Seen in most habitat types where suitable dense cover and low shrubs occur. They are common in urban parks and gardens, and can be seen in small social groups. These groups normally consist of one dominant male and several females and young birds.

Feeding: Superb Fairy-wrens feed on insects and other small arthropods. These are caught mostly on the ground, but may also be taken from low bushes. Feeding takes place in small social groups.

Breeding: The nest is a dome-shaped structure of grasses and other fine material. It is usually placed in a low bush and is constructed by the female. The female incubates the eggs alone, but both sexes feed the young. Other members of the group will also help with the feeding of the young.

Male Superb Fairy-wrens have been labelled as 'the least faithful birds in the world'. Females may be courted by up to 13 males in half an hour, and 76% of young are sired by males from outside the social group.

Calls: The Superb Fairy-wren gives a series of high pitched trills, which are given by both sexes. The male often extends these trills into song.

Minimum Size: 13cm

Maximum Size: 14cm

Average size: 14cm

Average weight: 10g

Clutch Size: Three to four.

Below in the comments is one of the captures I ended up taking about 15 minutes after this one. About an hour before this while at home I was checking out the gray skies, but also the slow brighter light to the west that was indicating the potential of the sun sneaking under the cloud deck for sunset.

So I headed down to the river at my Dad's. I surprised him by not calling and letting me know I was heading down (I had already visited him earlier in the day for a while, so he would not be expecting me back). He was sitting in the sun porch room that looks out over the river, taking in the slow sunset when I popped onto his deck with camera bag and tripod.

Told him I figured it was at least worth coming back to see what happened with the sunset as the potential was there for some great lighting. But it would be close to see which side won there with the clouds far off in the west. A lot like how the Super Bowl would most likely be too ...

This capture I made from out on the pier, and he had come out on this cold but calm winter evening on the pier to sit on the bench and discuss the pretty light, the reflections on the water (and who would also win the Super Bowl).

Whether the sky ended up lighting up or not ... just spending more time there with my Dad was worth while ... a win / win situation in my book. As my Dad will tell you, I have been down many times thinking the sky would end up being really colorful ... only to be let down. But I am getting better as time goes on to pick more winners.

Exposing these moments at sunset with the bright area and dark clouds is always a challenge ... getting that proper exposure to balance everything in one shot. Here I was also extending the shutter a little with the 6 Stop ND to smooth out the water just a bit as there was the slightest of breezes on the recent unfrozen river.

Think I got this one pretty close with the highlights there in the brightest of spots right at the limit.

Red-backed Fairy-wren

Scientific Name: Malurus melanocephalus

Description: This is the smallest of the fairy-wrens, with the male in breeding plumage inmistakable; glossy black with a scarlet saddle, black bill and shortish tail with a squared tip. Adult non-breeding males and immature birds are very similar to the females which are plain warm-brown with a pinkish-brown bill, though males have a black bill. The tail of the females is longer and more pointed. These wrens have no blue in their plumage at all. They are usually in small family groups with mainly brownish birds.

Similar species: The breeding male is unmistakable. Eclipse (non-breeding) males and females are a warm brown with pale lores and eye-ring and are smaller than the similar Superb Fairy-wren M. cyaneus, which have orange-red lores. The Variegated Fairy-wren is also bigger with a longer tail. These wrens rarely overlap with the similar White-winged Fairy-wren M leucopterus.

Distribution: Red-backed Wrens are endemic (found only there) to north and east Australia.

Habitat: They are found in dense understorey dominated by tall grasses in tropical and sub-tropical areas.

Seasonal movements: Resident and sedentary, and may move locally in the non-breeding season.

Feeding: Red-backed Wrens feed on small insects and arthropods, feeding in small groups among tall grasses and shrubs, sometimes in trees.

Breeding: Little is known about their breeding habits. The small dome-shaped nest is well-hidden and placed close to the ground, often in grass tussocks. The nest is made of grasses, bark strips and spiders web, lined with fine grasses and feathers. The eggs are white, splotched and spotted with red-brown marks. The female mainly incubates and broods the young. Both parents feed the nestlings, sometimes helped by others in the group, and remove the faecal sacs.

This is the smallest of the Fairy-wrens and is sometimes known as the Elfin Wren.

Calls: The call is a weak high-pitched reeling song, soft and unobstrusive, often only heard from quite close.

Minimum Size: 9cm

Maximum Size: 13cm

Average size: 11cm

Average weight: 8g

Breeding season: August to January

Clutch Size: 2-3

Incubation: 12 days

Nestling Period: 11 days

A Majestic and beautiful bird often sighted in forest areas around the country. Spotted two today, but sadly missed the flight shots of both of them in a second due to silly distractions. The bird was eyeing a prey in its style of watching from a perch. After a while it took off and disappeared.
