To wander in the streets of Cartagena is pure enjoyment. There are bright colours everywhere – a real concert for the artist’s eye. The palette is at times very daring, nothing less than surprising and refreshing. Most of this colourful spectacle is in the architecture, so it is like evolving in a monumental size artwork in the making, as each hour of the day leaves its own distinct signature on the cityscape.
A good part of the images shown here was taken in the touristy part of this old fortified city and Spanish bastion. My visual excitement didn’t stop there though, and it extended to other neighbourhoods of the region, such as Caño del Oro – therefore showing two extremes of the social fabric – so there is a little bit of everything: from photos of 5-star hotel facades to images of poor household garden walls. Yet even there, in the distinctly more humble setting, this tradition of embellishing one’s world with rich and joyful colour combinations prevails.

This type of duck is so common, that you mostly don't notice the very beautiful colours. I am always especially impressed with the blue feathers, that can only be seen when the duck is flying, or washing its feathers. Most of the time this beautiful blue colour is hidden under the wings.

Baffling as it may seem, this cacophony of colors is the part of a wall used by the artisans of Kumortuli to test the mix of their spray paints before being painted on the deities.

This photograph was taken inside St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, during Xavotsav 2010. This shot was taken when the Shamiana was being dismantled by workers after our 150th Year celebrations.
