We had a very late night following a party at friends..... so today was all about vegging out with the kids. We watched Horton Hears a Who, Spirited Away, we played card games, the Wii, did activities with the kids. And we ate lots of very nice food. Perfection!

Students have given apples to their teachers on the first day of school for over a century. But exactly how the apple earned this distinction is not entirely clear.

The most common explanation is that in the 16th through 18th centuries in Denmark, Sweden and the US, poorer farming folk would pay their children's teachers with food - most notably with common and plentiful apples and potatoes. Another is that farmers gave teachers this food to supplement the teachers' low incomes; as teachers' wages went up, the amount of food went down. Eventually, students brought in that one apple out of tradition more than anything else.

Another consideration is that in the retelling of the story of Adam and Eve. Eve is said to have eaten an apple from the Tree of Knowledge. The apple is not actually mentioned in the book of Genesis; only "the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge." Regardless, the apple story stuck. Since teachers offer knowledge to their students, the apple -as the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge — makes the perfect symbol.

Some people point out that when young children learn the alphabet, each letter is associated with a word they already know: A is for Apple, B is for Ball, and so on. So the apple is a symbol of the letter A, which is also the grade that most students want. So perhaps some students came to the conclusion that if they gave their teachers an A at the beginning of the school year, the teachers might return the favour and give them an A at the end of the year.

This is a drawing I did in Prismacolor coloured pencils of the "smiling" face of a Ferrari California on display on Preston Street during the 2009 Ottawa Ferrari Festival courtesy of the Ferrari Québec Ferrari/Maserati dealership in Montreal. It is based on this photo.

This was actually the first drawing I started of this car, but it was the second I completed. I finished my Ferrari California oil pastel drawing of the same car in December.

It's also the first coloured pencil drawing that I've completed in almost a year and a half. This one's 17 inches by 13 inches, which is larger than my previous few coloured pencil drawings, which were 12 inches by 9 inches.

The smile of the Ferrari California in the original photo reminds me of the grin of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. This photo was taken pretty darn close to the grille of the car, so the grin looks even wider than usual. Also, the glass dome of the Ferrari California usually look wedge-shaped, but thanks to foreshortening, they look much more round.

The advantage of drawing the car from this close and low angle is that I was able to put a decent amount of detail into the Ferrari prancing horse emblem.

Colour pencil drawing based on an excisting painting by, I think, a French painter. I don't know the name anymore and thus far I have failed finding it out. So, if anyone knows who origanally painted this, please let me know...

Lesser known Hindu Goddess from the book The Shakti Coloring Book by Ekabhumi Charles Ellik. Using Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. I have slowly made more progress, taking my time so I don't ruin it in my haste. Particularly happy with the water flowing over the edge of the lotus platform. Bhuvaneshvari (a.k.a. Aditi, Vishvarupa, Mahamaya) is the Universal Earth Goddess of Love. More about her story when she is complete.
