Sunday morning and the last hours before we brought Inma to the airport after a wonderful weekend: She insisted on drawing cranes. Obviously the only place in Seville where you can draw them is quite dangerous because of the traffic and so we humoured her.

I wanted to click a shot for "innovation" as the theme for an upcoming diary publication in my office. This was one of the shot i submitted, but they have chosen another click of mine, which I will submit soon, maybe after the diary is published. With that it will be my first selection to any sort of publication.
For now here are the tech details of the snap -

Leporello Sketchbook made by Choni NaudĂn (Estudio Ductus). As ever mine is a mix of styles and techniques, no coherence to be seen there except that it was all made within 3 wonderful days. Thanks so much, Clara! And to the others for your great company!

I was looking through an old sketch book and came across this which made me smile â our FIRST COLOUR TV! Not a microwave.
I drew this for my Mum's 50th Birthday card, based on a design from a book of old school Dutch Tattoo flash. My Mum once said she'd get tattooed for her 50th but she now claims she never said this so i drew her a tattoo instead. ^_~
Inma Serrano came from Sevilla to teach a workshop on on location sketching - her special topic was how to enjoy most your sketching activities and how to avoid disappointments. We all laughed a lot and spend the afternoon sketching in high mood.

Almost completed design for a tee. I'm fascinated by the Day of the Dead festival in Hispanic culture. I love the melting together of celebration and morbidity - the proliferation of sugared skulls, decorated skulls, shrines, candles, masses of flowers. It reminds me a little of the aesthetic and mood of the Baz Lurhmann film 'Romeo and Juliet' - which was obviously inspired in part by aspects of that culture.
I drew reference from a human skull, marigold flowers and roses, plus also from traditional tattoo designs for the heart, crown, ribbon, butterflies and birds. Some freehanded candles, blossoms and two stars finish it off. I took it all into Illustrator and created clean linework - then hand rendered the colour with pencils (took approx 8 hours non stop).
Once I get my silly programs working again I'll clean it up in Photoshop - the skull actually has beautiful blue gradients over it, which are lost in this initial scan. I also want to edit the candles and stars along with the overall colour.
Should be available as a tee very soon at my Redbubble store. I'll be my first customer!

i really wanted to draw a fantasy scene from a forest, the stuff i see when walking around in the woods...
i sketched the mushroom from a reference image, coloured it in... and it just looked really blah. so i took it to photoshop and made it look vintage, haha. notice the paper texture coming through?
