It was founded in 1894 by the Portuguese immigrants Joaquim Borges de Meireles and Manuel José Lebrão, having an extensive list of famous clients in Brazilian society.
Its architecture and environment give you an idea of what Belle Époque would have been like in the then capital of the Republic. Between 1912 and 1918, the interior halls were renovated with an Art Nouveau touch, with huge crystal mirrors brought from Antwerp, framed by elegant friezes carved from rosewood. The wooden furniture of the interior was carved at the same time by the craftsman Antonio Borsoi.
In 1922, its facilities were enlarged with the construction of a second floor, with a tea room. An opening in the ceiling of the ground floor allows you to see the skylight of the tea room, decorated with beautiful stained glass windows.
Among the famous clients are Chiquinha Gonzaga, Olavo Bilac, Emilio de Meneses, Rui Barbosa, Villa-Lobos, Lima Barreto, José do Patrocínio, Getúlio Vargas, Juscelino Kubitschek, Alberto I of Belgium and Isabel II of the United Kingdom, among many others .
Il colombo è stato una delle prime specie ad essere addomesticata ed il suo legame con l’uomo e le costruzioni si perde nell’antichità: tra l’8000 e il 3000 a.C. nell’area della Fertile Mezzaluna, dove l’uomo diventò un agricoltore sedentario. Oggi appare la specie più inurbata, con un completo adattamento all’ambiente urbano, di cui sfrutta ogni possibile risorsa e nel quale ha trovato un surrogato del suo antico habitat (pareti rocciose).

The Colombo Centre (Centro Colombo in Portuguese) is a shopping centre located in the parish of CarnideThe architecture of the space, as well as its original decoration, was themed to the time of the Age of Discovery, one of the periods most important of the history of Portugal. The squares and streets inside the centre have names alluding to the Elizabethan era, such as "Avenue of the Descobrimentos" and "Square Trópico de Câncer". From 2007 and 2009, the centre renovated its interior design completely, mixing contemporary concepts with the originals.
Colombo, the quasi-capital of Sri Lanka, is an up-and-coming city. It can't (yet) compete with the big Asian cities, but a lot of new and creative things are being built. Here's an interesting architectural detail I discovered last fall.

Colombo, de facto capital of Sri Lanka. The sheltered location on a peninsula + a protected natural harbor made the formerly small fishing village a sought-after trading port for the spice island.
After independence in 1948, Colombo also became the political center of the island.

Colombo, de facto Hauptstadt Sri Lankas. Die geschützte Lage auf einer Halbinsel + ein geschützter Naturhafen machten das ehemals kleine Fischerdorf zu einem begehrten Handelshafen für die Gewürzinsel.
Nach der Unabhängigkeit 1948 wurde Colombo auch politisches Zentrum der Insel.
