A street photograph in Colombo, the de facto capital of Sri Lanka. The building in the background was rather disturbing, which is why I show it only faintly.

The Colombo Centre (Centro Colombo in Portuguese) is a shopping centre located in the parish of CarnideThe architecture of the space, as well as its original decoration, was themed to the time of the Age of Discovery, one of the periods most important of the history of Portugal. The squares and streets inside the centre have names alluding to the Elizabethan era, such as "Avenue of the Descobrimentos" and "Square Trópico de Câncer". From 2007 and 2009, the centre renovated its interior design completely, mixing contemporary concepts with the originals.
Colombo, de facto capital of Sri Lanka. The sheltered location on a peninsula + a protected natural harbor made the formerly small fishing village a sought-after trading port for the spice island.
After independence in 1948, Colombo also became the political center of the island.

The Town Hall - Colombo is the headquarters of the Colombo Municipal Council and the office of the Mayor of Colombo. It is built in front of the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the meeting place for the elected municipal council.
In 1922 the Colombo Municipal Council held an international architectural design competition and the winning design was drawn by S. J. Edwards, of the architectural firm Ralph Booty & Co. The foundation stone was laid on 24 May 1924, by the Mayor of Colombo, Thomas Reid, CCS. The construction of the building was undertaken by A. A. Gammon & Co and on 9 August 1928 it was opened by the Governor Sir Herbert Stanley KCMG. Edwards' design was similar to L'Enfant's neoclassical style Capitol Building in Washington, D. C.
It is is 108 m (354 ft) in length and 51.3 m (168 ft) in width. The total height of the building equals its width. Many alterations have been made to the original design, but the building still possesses a few characteristics that have not been altered by modern renovations.
Colombo is a beach town.
Beach area of Colombo is a preferred place for those living in the city for meeting, chatting, eating, and drinking with friends. There are simple restaurants and food stalls that become busy on weekends on the beach.
M9 872 approaches Colombo Maradana with a train from Kandy on the final full day of our Sri Lankan trip.
This really was a welcome sight as aside from a number of stored locomotives on Maradana depot we had seen absolutely no evidence of the M9 class for the previous 8 days of the trip, nor my previous visit in 2015 - so they do work sometimes!
10 of these Alstom locomotives were built in 2000 for Sri Lankan Railways at Belfort in France- unlike their more familiar cousins the EWS class 67, these locomotives are fitted with a Ruston power plan and certainly sound quite different as a result!
Since their introduction the class has been plagued by problems with maintenance and the cost and supply of spare parts leaving them as the least utilised fleet of locos in the country, often with only one or two machines in traffic.
My 2024 trip report from Sri Lanka is now online here.
