On a frigid day I wasn't about to go hiking. I saw this shrub slightly moving in the wind. It called for a creative long-exposure shot.

Let's change things up a little bit and follow the colorless post with something with plenty of color, something warm. Deceivingly cold in this instance since even that morning, temperatures were far from warm. In this post #4 from that morning, the sun finally found its way through the clouds on the horizon and I really liked the glow on the snow on the frozen lake.

Orchard Park is one of the suburbs of Buffalo, NY, located to the south in the infamous snow belt. Here, that snow created a wonderful white blanket on the frozen Green Lake contrasting the warm sky above.

Pre-visualization is key in photography but in wildlife photography it seems a bit difficult as most situations rely on chance encounters or the willingness of your subject to behave. But, it is possible to pre-visualize all of the other elements in your shot. This photo of a Bobcat moving through the snow was a shot that I had visualized for some time. But it wasn’t easy to get. We spent several days sitting in deep snow on the edge of the Madison River waiting for this cat to show up. Eventually each day it made an appearance. But the snow on its side of the river was sparse and patchy at best. So I waited, took photos of it jumping, climbing, hunting and going about its business. Patience pays off and for a brief moment I was able to catch it walking through the largest patch of snow that was present at the time.
For some people it’s just a photo of a Bobcat walking through snow, I certainly have more dynamic images of this feline exhibiting some pretty cool behavior but for me it is the realization of a photo that I’d been hoping to capture for some time. I live on the west coast of the United States; Bobcats walking through snow are a rare occurrence for me. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I enjoyed capturing a moment that I previously only dreamed of catching.

In the morning we had -52C, but when I was photographing, it got up to -50C.

2/52~I got out for a bit on Sunday to take some pictures down by the dike at Hayden Lake. I loved how clear the ice was compared to some of the other lakes I have visited in the last few weeks.
As I type this, an “arctic air invasion” is pushing its way south to us in Texas, leaving much of the country feeling as cold as a mid-winter’s day. While I’m sitting here thinking of the precautions and preparations I’ll take for the impending cold spell, I wanted to share a list of the most important items I carry with me and how those correspond to preparing for cold weather. ~ Bryan
During an emergency is a lousy time to think of all the things you should have been carrying. The important thing is not to wait until the last minute to prepare.
