Though not nearly as nice as the scenery out in Yellowstone Park, Winneshiek County's coldwater streams offer comparable trout fishing. Coldwater creek contains wild brown and brook trout in addition to stocked rainbows. I had the stream all to myself tonight as most anglers have hung up their fishing rods for the year.
I've been thinking about Saint Helens a lot lately, it didn't help that Ernie Misner posted a great shot taken the day before this one the other day and Joe Garcia posted a great shot from Cold Water Lake today. great sunset aside, in this one you can see the scorched ground still hasn't seeded life, but it's getting closer. saplings are starting on the leeward side standing right next to their fallen grandfathers and of course I was lucky to be there when the flowers were in bloom. It's all buried in snow right now, but it won't be much longer...... :-)
the view the other direction in comments. It got a lot more colorful in a half hour, but I like the blue hour shots too. these were taken within a couple minutes of each other from almost the same spot.
Coldwater creek was a tributary to the Toutle River up until May 18th, 1980 when up to 600 feet of mountain was blown across it effectively damming it and creating Washington States newest lake, Coldwater.
Sitting alee of Coldwater and Coldwater II, now Johnston Ridge, the area was mostly spared from the devastation unlike nearby Spirit Lake which still has thousands of trees floating on it.
Thanks for sharing your stories of 'where you were', that was really cool, people from all over the country were effected in one way or another. I was alone at Johnston Ridge on this day, but every other time I've been there I could hear a multitude of languages being spoken as folks come from all over to see our shortest volcano. :)
We saw this chaotic collection of tree swallows when we kayaked out to a dead tree out in the middle of Coldwater Lake (Mount St. Helens area)
I was tooling though Coldwater, MI the other day (one of my favorite towns, home to the fantastic Capri Drive-In), and went to turn around and WHAM, there this stood. These full-sized vintage gas station signs line the driveway of a transmission shop, and what a display they make! I want each and every one of them.
This week's Covid-19 Adventure and Picnic took us to Kentucky Allenye Provincial Park, Kane Valley and Brodie Siding.
One of several gems left behind by the Kettle Valley Railroad (CPR) at the Brodie Siding and Wye near Brookmere British Columbia. This one crossing the Coldwater River is known as the Coldwater Bridge number 8 and is a Pratt or through truss design. It's a hard one to photograph as it's down in a narrow canyon with a river flowing through it and I didn't feel like getting wet.
I love the little village life....I worked 12 yrs for this chain....and because we were in a city we had to keep up with renos and upgrades all the time.....here it's still a mom and pop hardware....I love it....
Five mile long Coldwater Lake was created by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens which blocked the outlet of Coldwater Creek with volcanic debris. The dock was lighted with truck parking lights. It took quite a bit of "sliding" to address color balance in this image. Not happy with the color balance but I got tired of working on it!

LSRC's Pere Marquette unit #6437 and another SD70M lead Y119 down the main, passing the intermediates at E Coldwater Rd. MOW work on the north side of McGrew Yard had them run down the main and shove in from the south end.
Located seven miles from the blast zone and two ridges away wasn't enough to spare the vegetation on this magnificent peak towering upwards of 5700 feet, it was blown completely bare. Forty years later wind and burrowing varmints have provided enough soil for plants to start, but only just. Shredded boles and ghost white logs still dominate the land but they too will eventually disappear and become one with the land once more.

Taken on a late afternoon in December, 1989 a few months before it was relocated about eight miles west to a park in Oxford, Alabama. Tradition holds that the bridge was built in 1850 by a former slave, possibly a forerunner of the famed bridge-builder Horace King, another freed slave who would build wooden bridges throughout the Deep South. As such, it is a landmark of black history in the South. Some sources indicate a bridge was built across the creek in 1839, immediately after the Creek Nation was forcibly removed from Alabama to what is now Oklahoma. Whether this bridge was the covered bridge that still stands is not known. The present structure is known to have been in place by around 1850. Taken on Kodak Royal Gold negative film with a 35mm Canon SureShot point and shoot camera.
The Indiana Northeastern departs Coldwater, Michigan with #1601, a former Reading GP7, leading long-hood forward. Completed in 1852, this route was the original mainline between Chicago and Toledo of the Michigan Southern, an early predecessor of the New York Central in the Midwest. The route that would become the present-day Chicago Line was opened between Elkhart and Toledo via Kendallville in 1858, and the original Michigan Southern was subsequently relegated to a secondary route.
A much anticipated return to Coldwater Cove was overshadowed by dreary conditions the morning we made our stop.
I had to work hard to keep my disappointment in check as I worked with what light we were given.
Here, with a bit of a break in the overcast conditions a daylight white balance shifted colours slightly but to pleasing effect.
Coldwater Stagecoach Stop in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Built as early as 1815, this small hewn-log cabin served as a stagecoach stop on the Jackson Military Road and is believed to be one of several cabins operated as a hotel by Michael Dickson, the first white settler to Tuscumbia. The original name of the town was Coldwater. Cold and clear water came out of a nearby spring.
