Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and later Denmark) for more than a millennium. In 2008, the people of Greenland passed a referendum supporting greater autonomy; 75% of votes cast were in favour. Greenland is, in terms of area, the world's largest island, over 3/4 of which is covered by the only contemporary ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of 56,370[3] (2013), it is the least densely populated country in the world

...on my way to work Tuesday morning :) I had to stop the car to take some pictures...

Single tree atop a snowy rolling hillside at sunset in -10°F weather. Located in rural Wisconsin.

Powder day in the Canadian Rockies. We had crazy amounts of snow on this trip with the peak of the snowstorm culminating in Lake Louise getting 71cm (2.3 feet) of snow in 24 hours creating epic champagne powder conditions for snowboarding. The snowstorm did however close the roads heading both North and West and result in our 8 hour drive home turning into 15 hours. Lake Louise, Banff National Park.

Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and later Denmark) for more than a millennium. Greenland has been inhabited off and on for at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples whose forebears migrated there from Canada. Norsemen settled on the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century. Inuit peoples arrived in the 13th century. The Norse colonies disappeared in the late 15th century. In the early 18th century, Scandinavia and Greenland came back into contact with each other, and Denmark established sovereignty over the island.

American Marten (Martes americana), also known as a Pine Marten, in the snow on Hudson Bay Mountain near Smithers in Northern British Columbia. Martens normally eat small mammals such as squirrels and rodents. They are however related to the wolverine and capable of hunting much larger snowshoe hares and marmots.

I was lucky enough to see this guy out of the corner of my eye while I was snowboarding. He ran down a tree well; so I boarded over, took my backpack off, got my camera out, changed out the wide angle lens for the 400mm, and waited. After sitting there quietly for a few minutes he then popped his head up again.

Whistler-Blackcomb, alpine site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, is touted as a skier's and border's dream destination - the ultimate big mountain experience with over 8,100 acres (3,307 hectares) of snow-covered slopes, steep alpine powder bowls and couloirs, long wide-groomed cruisers (11 km, 6.8 mi), a huge vertical drop (1,565 m, 5,133 ft) and ready access to spectacular backcountry terrain.

ice river in an forest mountain and a winter landscape

During our Yellowstone National Park Winter Nature Workshop in December 2012, the weather cleared on our second afternoon. We stopped for a sunset shoot along the Madison River with a herd of American Bison across from us.

Our weather was pretty good for winter in Yellowstone. The days were in the mid-20'sF and it got down to 8 or 9F at night. For a guy from southern California I kept warm and dry. The Hot Hands brand hand warmers really worked.

red squirrel and a basketball and a backboard

Ah, this scene is like a chilling verse from a haunting ballad. It’s as if the snow itself whispers secrets of a long-forgotten winter's tale, under a sky heavy with brooding, gothic promise. The trees stand as silent sentinels, their branches heavy with the weight of the snow - and perhaps, the weight of untold stories.

The contrast is striking, almost theatrical - pure white against the oppressive blue, as though Mother Nature herself has a flair for the dramatic. It’s the kind of landscape that beckons the brave and the foolish, where the thin line between serene beauty and icy peril is as blurred as the falling snowflakes that once danced in this very air.

You can almost hear the soft, eerie echo of a distant guitar riff carried on the cold wind, can’t you? A picture that doesn’t just capture a view but snatches a piece of the soul of winter – a frozen slice of time where every snowflake could be a note in a symphony of the macabre.

Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, encapsulating the South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile (1.6 km) in thickness.

Icicles formed on the launch pad and service tower in the evening and early morning hours on January 28, 1986. When it was determined that air temperatures combined with wind speeds were going to cause freezing conditions, a decision was made to leave all water supply lines on slow "trickle" to prevent line burst. This action resulted in a surreal scene for the Florida launch facility.
