In Scotland, between The River Garry and Loch Oich, near the Village of Invergarry is a magical unnamed mossy forest. On this cold December morning a rare event occurred. Cold temperatures, fog, and a high pressure front created perfect conditions for hoar frost to form. Before my very eyes, the forest transformed into a mystical sugar coated delight. You can see the beginnings of the frost coating the tree top canopies, delicately glazing the intricate branches.

It's too bad that Flickr does not offer any good way to view panoramas. This one is stitched from seven 25 MP images (taken handheld). I'm always amazed how Photoshop manages to nicely align and blend the images together.

Walk, run, or bike to see the annual cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.

The cherry trees were a gift from Japan in 1912 as a commemoration for the 1854 Treaty of Peace and Amity which officially established formal relations between the two countries.

The Yoshino Cherry Blossoms in Washington, DC only bloom in the spring and the window of opportunity is very small. I photographed this on a Monday when the cherry blossoms were beginning to peak and by that Friday night strong winds blew most of them off the trees. As with any once-a-year photographic opportunity, it can be very crowded with people, especially at sunrise.

The most photogenic groups of cherry blossoms are located around the Tidal Basin which is a man-made inlet adjacent to the Potomac River. That morning hordes of photographers, tourists and fitness enthusiasts were jockeying for position to get a view of the pink cherry blossoms.

It took me over 1,000 hours in Photoshop to clone out all the pesky people in the background to get this lone biker in the scene, or actually, I secured a presidential order to keep everybody back at least 500 feet from my shot or I simply waited until this lone biker walked under this cherry blossom branch where I was camping out with my Canon 5D Mark II.

What story do you believe?

Red squirrels and titmouse are standing on a sledge with reindeer

Choosing which flickr picture to post is getting tough. I have a set of wonderful sunrise and sunset pictures which for sure grant lots of favorites. I'm just not in the mood. More intimate. Less epic. That seems to be my current mindset.

So, what you see here is a picture I took in January when visiting Yosemite National Park. The weather was particularly interesting. Fresh snow, cloud cover.

And still, nothing can take away the grandeur of this landscape. I'm actually not sure if that weather, and the absence of people, emphasized it even. What amazes me at Yosemite is the massive scale of the rock formations, ever so clearly put in contrast to objects were are used to, like trees. At the same time, the rocks are so distinctive, you always recognize them.

It's funny, I actually only realize now, writing this description, that I took a very similar picture at the same day, just with El Capitan, and posted it to flickr a few months ago. It's all about putting things in perspective. You don't need to show the whole El Capitan, you don't need to show the whole Half Dome. With a landscape as famous as this, you can focus on the details.

Japanese Garden in Tallinn in winter

A snow covered boat on the River Thames on Cliveden Reach, during heavy snow; colour image;

In the past few days all across the Netherlands people are suffering from Skate Fever. Due to the not cold winters they have not been able to do their favorite pasttime in the winter, skating on the canals and ponds that are everywhere. Well, this year, for the first time in 12 years, it is cold enough for the water to freeze enough for them to skate. Almost a whole generation has passed that has not had this opportunity. Children on double-bladed, tin skates push chairs ahead of themselves for balance. They learn by trial and error. In the Netherlands many people do skate. Speed teams, in tight lines, nose to nape of neck, legs pumping in a powerful unison, set the ice whining and vibrating like the rails under an approaching train. Last sunday is was the last day the ice will be strong enough to skate on, so there were reportedly over 1,000,000 people on skates that day.

Photo taken on the Gouwsea between Marken and and Volendam. The sun light against it on natural ice brighten this blue jeans cloqué. Probably a girl learning to skate by trial and error. Having a rest on the ice and got stucked - and almost frozen by the cold temperature. Almost a perfect blue print ;-)
