Spring is trying desperately to come!! As I work on this listening to my sump pump running every 60 seconds....the sun is shining, it's beautiful outside and the melting snow is giving me an ulcer. :/
I saw this car, with the Alaska license plate COLD, in a parking lot on the way back to the Fairbanks Best Western hotel. I walked around the car, to determine that it was a genuine license plate. Then I took this photo.
I did not think of a photo of the license plate itself. It is certainly appropriate for Fairbanks. I was surprised that it was on a modest car, a Honda. Winter temperatures in Fairbanks normally reach -40 degrees (-40 C).
It was a cold and frosty winter morning. I know it sounds like the opening line to a bad novel, but it's true. The sun peeked out from the clouds for a few minutes to brighten up this photo of a frosty tree.
Cold, dry days in Trondheim, Norway with temperatures as low as -15°C (5°F) by the canal. Waiting for snow…
Taking advantage of the early morning light I placed an inch long polished moonstone on a piece of white paper. Sunlight streaming though the stone produced a cold orange flame dispersion pattern in its own shadow. Turning the stone in different directions and planes produced some amazing patterns (to follow). Turning this mostly yellow-orange stone produces shades of green, blue, and yellow with areas of intense orange. It is in the feldspar class of minerals.
Around Frankfurt, there's heaps of cold war relicts. helipads, rocket batteries or, like this, an old tank training ground. I'm not sure if, in retrospect, that all should have made me feel safe or worried...

One of the first photo shoots. It was very cold at the time of shooting, which added more atmosphere. The model doesn't smoke, so I had to give a quick lesson on cigarettes.

Tijdens de oefening Cold Response maken de Zr.Ms. Rotterdam, Zr. Ms. Johan de Witt en een Cougar detachement samen met de bootgroep en een raidingsquadron deel uit van de Nato Response Force. Tesamen beoefenen ze met diverse landen de inzet het landen op strand, inzet met de helikopter en verschillende scenario's voor het vlootverband om te oefenen met amfibische operaties.

0°F here after -6°F a short time before plus 25-35 mph winds creating wind chills of -25-30°F. Had been even lower wind chills the day before around -30-35°F. Crazy cold! I always clear snow in our front yard and throw a lot of seed out creating a very popular 'restaurant' for dark eye juncos, sparrows, mourning doves and occasional cardinals and blue jays. Have to shoot through our slightly open front door so not much composition choice.
You know it's a cold summer when you just want to stay in the cold water instead of in the even colder wind.

The Tubosider is a 7-metre deep tunnel under the ice about 1 km from Concordia base, near the summer camp.
The tunnel is used to park vehicles that cannot operate during the cold winter months. If they were not sheltered they would be submerged by windblown snow.
The tunnel has a constant temperature of -50° C since it is dug in the ice. This makes it an ideal place to store samples that need to be kept stable, such as ESA experiments or ice cores.
The tubosider is sealed in February, at the end of the summer campaign, and reopened nine months later, at the beginning of the next summer campaign.
As you can see in the photo, despite the lack of moisture in Antarctica, the Tubosider has complex deposits of ice crystals formed over years of water vapour solidifying on the cold metal vault of the tunnel.

Slechts een paar mensen die de kou trotseren op het 's avonds zo mooi verlichte plein in hartje Krakau, de Grote Markt (Rynek Główny). Het kleine kerkje op de voorgrond is de Sint-Adalbertkerk (in het Pools beter bekend als de Kościół św. Wojciecha). Interessant feitje over deze mini-kerk: het is bijna duizend jaar oud en is daarmee één van de oudste stenen kerken van Polen.

Only a few people who braved the cold in the evening so beautifully lighted square in the heart of Kraków, called the Main Square (Rynek Główny). The small church is called the Church of St. Adalbert, in Polish better known as the Kościół św. Wojciecha. Interesting fact: this church is almost a thousand years old and therefore one of the oldest stone churches in Poland.
