It's easy., at this remove from eighty years later, to believe that the end of the second world war meant that the world enjoyed immediate and stable peace.
Nothing could be further from the truth: there were fears of the war continuing as a struggle between the democracies of the West and the Communist bloc, with nuclear weapons able to annihilate entire cities. Britain prepared by building its own nuclear deterrent, whilst to protect the civilian population it rebuilt the ARP function - now known as Civil Defence, or CD. It also needed people to join the Auxiliary Fire Service and as Police Specials - fully qualified, but on-call, firefighters and Police.
The Civil Defence Corps, the auxiliary Fire Service and the Police needed recruits - thousands of them. Local authorities up and down the country were responsible for full and part-time posts to observe incoming aircraft, or look after areas of each town to rescue survivors and help the Police keep order in a post-apocalypse Britain.
Bolton Corporation used a fairly imaginative way to raise awareness and gain recruits for its CD unit, Fire Service and Police. Withdrawn Leyland bus number 186 was taken into the paint shop where the Corporation Transport's craftsmen gave full head to their creative talents, with this amazing advertising livery. 186 was driven around Bolton to drum up recruits - we don't know how successful it was in Bolton, but we do know that it was always a struggle to get CD recruits as the pay was very low and as time went on, its relevance faded as the Cold War settled into a semi-stable, sullen sense of mutual destruction.
By then 186 had also lost its relevance - after a time promoting Civil Defence, 186 was sent to the scrapyard. You can still see preserved Bolton buses, not least number 77 of 1956 which is now in the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.

So winter is here in Texas. After a wonderful thanksgiving weekend in Ft Worth and Houston I am back here in Lubbock. I was quickly displayed with another strange piece of Southern decor.
Truck testicles.
Yes, these are little aluminum things that people hang from whatever vehicle they drive letting all know that this vehicle is their penis.
While heading home after a bit of time at the library i was lucky enough to have a red light to allow some time to snap a photo of these cold testicles.
They must be, why else would they have a warmer?

I'm posting this Thing a Week picture into another group this week: In the fridge. A group for photos taken from inside refrigerators with the door closed.
And they say the internet shouldn't get the Nobel peace prize!
Anyway, I used an LED lamp to get the lighting like this. My flash is disabled in macro mode, and I really liked the effect.
Of course, the Thing a Week theme is 'Drink', so I composed all the drink related articles for the shot. The tin is for coffee grounds. :)
These infant gulls (?), along with their mother, were spotted in Canal Park today. The lake is unusually cold for early April, and the birds were wading awfully close to the ice.

A shot as I returned to the city from my sunrise adventure on the seafront this past weekend. It was darn cold but I pretty happy to be out shooting in the solitude that 5:30 a.m. brings.
As the afternoon got colder, darker and wetter.

A cathode is any electrode that emits electrons. When used in electrical and electronic devices (most fluorescent lamps, vacuum tubes, etc.), the cathode is explicitly heated, creating a hot cathode. By taking advantage of thermionic emission, electrons can overcome the work function of the cathode without an electric field to pull the electrons out. But if sufficient voltage is present, electrons can still be stripped even out of a cathode operating at ambient temperature. Because it is not deliberately heated, such a cathode is referred to as a cold cathode, although several mechanisms may eventually cause the cathode to become quite hot once it is operating. A cold front pushes clouds off to the west at sunset. When we see a sky like this one, we're heading for a cold night.
Taken a couple of weeks ago. The temp got down to 8F (-13 C) that night, pretty cold for this part of Pennsylvania.
Look for the metallic structure directly under the auxiliary water tank. This is the cold air return for the propane heater. The actual duct comes up through the floor, terminates 2 inches above the floor and has a grill in place. And you see the metal box has holes in it acting as yet another grill face. This doubly prevents foreign matter from getting sucked toward the heater. It also made a great, but tight fit, for the extra water tank.
spent a really cold night in bello, on the weekend so i went for a long drive to warm up my engien and came a cross these beautiful cows.
This one is for you Gail, my butt practically froze off snapping this.... I climbed over the river wall and down over the rocks to get to the water's edge. God it was nasty- I only managed a few shots before my hands were too cold to work the camera. And the wind was so bitterly cold- it sent me scrambling for my truck pretty quick, long before the best sunset colors could develope.... rats!
