I don't like snow and cold weather to much, but being a dog owner we have to brave it to walk the mad wally, this was taken at 22:30 coming back from East Pastures Farm fields looking back at my home village, From an old railway bridge spanning a disused track. North Skelton was built to man North Skelton mine, which is at the far left of this image. Bugger the snow

It's not Embarrass, MN (story) but, a low of 2 degrees F tonight?! Come on!

Christmas self portrait.

I ran the 2011 NorCal Tough Mudder at Squaw Valley in September. Crazy, challenging, exhilarating and a bit addictive. I'm signed up for the TM in Southern California in late February and another in July 2012. It's not the same, but I have been trying a bit of cold water training in prep for the February "mudder." The 55 degree pool water doesn't compare to the sub-40 degree water in the real thing, including the ~33degree water in the "Chernobyl Jacuzzi", but it's all part of my mental prep.

Strobist: AB 800 @ 1/4 power subject left. Sunlight from subject right.

Beyond cold, actually. It was so cold my actual BONES hurt. no proper title yet!

Taking advantage of the early morning light I placed an inch long polished moonstone on a piece of white paper. Sunlight streaming though the stone produced a cold orange flame dispersion pattern in its own shadow. Turning the stone in different directions and planes produced some amazing patterns (to follow). Turning this mostly yellow-orange stone produces shades of green, blue, and yellow with areas of intense orange. It is in the feldspar class of minerals.

so i'm late posting the weekly selfportrait again...

but here I am, cold (wearing a sweatshirt in August!), and having a bowl of cereal for breakfast.

what can I say? I'm just a boring person :)

Close up of a cold-cathode neon gas discharge light in a shop window.

A cathode is any electrode that emits electrons. When used in electrical and electronic devices (most fluorescent lamps, vacuum tubes, etc.), the cathode is explicitly heated, creating a hot cathode. By taking advantage of thermionic emission, electrons can overcome the work function of the cathode without an electric field to pull the electrons out. But if sufficient voltage is present, electrons can still be stripped even out of a cathode operating at ambient temperature. Because it is not deliberately heated, such a cathode is referred to as a cold cathode, although several mechanisms may eventually cause the cathode to become quite hot once it is operating. Most cold cathode devices are filled with a gas which can be ionized. A few cold cathode devices contain a vacuum. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_cathode

"Cold"

One of the first photo shoots. It was very cold at the time of shooting, which added more atmosphere. The model doesn't smoke, so I had to give a quick lesson on cigarettes.

Ps

Working with models is more difficult than photographing the environment and nature.

It gets pretty cold in Minnesota. I was on my way to Costa Rica so I loved to see this sign.

It has been cold here in West Michigan since New Years Day. This is our bedroom window in mid-evening on JANUARY 2, 2010. Jack Frost's work has been a favorite part of my winters experiences since early childhood. I trhink made extra special in those early years because my father was "Jack Frost" I may have credited him for the art work early on!
