There is just a single Redwing in this photo taken from the house window. However, the bird was part of a huge cold weather movement that took place on Sunday. Although Redwings are fairly common during Britain's winter months, they are actually quite unusual right down on the Dorset coast, being much more common further north. So it was a huge surprise when several hundred arrived outside the house, mid-morning, looking for food. A few Fieldfare were also mixed in with the flock.
I checked a Dorset bird internet site and Redwings weren't reported on the Saturday or indeed on the Monday. However, on Sunday, the day of this photo, there were reports of large Redwing flocks from numerous county locations e.g. 600 from Ferrybridge between Weymouth and Portland. That is about 5 miles from here.
What was being witnessed was a classic cold weather movement, just like the flocks of Lapwing and Golden Plover during the big freeze a fortnight previously.

Extra Special Bitter is a traditional English ale, which is served with a lower carbonation than most North American styles. Aromas of banana and caramel sweetness are the first to hit your nose, as biscuit and toffee notes roll down your tongue and the special bitter finishes with a hint of grass and a thirst for another

In the Netherlands the 1st of January is traditionally celebrated with a new year’s dive (Nieuwjaarsduik). No matter how cold it is, at least 25.000 people plunge into the freezing water each January.
There are over 60 locations in the Netherlands where you can jump into the sea or a lake. The largest dive is held at the beach of Scheveningen, where well over 10.000 people plunge into the sea each year.
The tradition started in 1960 when a swim club decided to start the year fresh with a plunge in the sea. The new year’s dive received national attention after a big soup brand decided to sponsor it. From that moment on, the amount of participants and locations has increased every year.

Weather has taken a U turn in Bangalore and it's become cooler now while the rest of the country is still battling with the scorching heat. While I would like to definitely sip on a hot soup here, I made this cold and refreshing Mango Cantaloup Orange Soup for my dear ones who are looking for recipes to beat the heat and spend minimum time in the kitchen. This soup takes just 10 minutes from start to finish and no use of gas makes it even more summer friendly.
Just pair it with some bread slices and you have a really quick meal ready in no time. Here is the recipe.

We had snow flurries yesterday, so a few winter images seemed appropriate.

We finally got a dusting of snow late yesterday afternoon. Went to the nearest park to find these guys looking cold and hungry. Next time I'll bring some bread for them !
