This is cold, Central Texas style. The bird bath is frozen over after two days of not getting above freezing.At least it had warmed up to about 23 F ( -5 C) when I took this shot. No snide comments from northerners suffering through subzero (F) temps please - this is way, way colder than we normally get. For 118 pictures in 2018, #78, "Cold".
Behind one of CN's full bodied C40-8Ms, K445 pulls out of the siding at South Ottawa following a three-way meet. At the time of this photo, NW Ohio was still in Mother Nature's freezer, and we had to combat 20 mph winds, blowing snowflakes, and excruciating cold in the moments leading up to the ethanol train's departure.

Around Frankfurt, there's heaps of cold war relicts. helipads, rocket batteries or, like this, an old tank training ground. I'm not sure if, in retrospect, that all should have made me feel safe or worried...

This is another shot from my Alaskan cruise I took several years ago. Just looking at this makes me cold.

It's early on the morning of January 2nd 2026. L591's crew was already hard at work cleaning the backlog of cars accumulated in the yard since Christmas cancellations. With only one working cab heater aboard GTW 6226 and minus 4 degree Fahrenheit winter trying to fill up the already cold cab thru every holes and cracks, heavy winter coat and hat are mandatory in cab that day as showing by engineer trainee S.P.
Outside, sub-zero temperature and the ever-present windchill kept the ground crew quite busy dealing with rock-solid air hoses, frozen angle cock along with switches.
You bet S.P feel quite lucky escaping an another winter working the ground and filling up the right hand seat, up toward the spring season.

Dawn has only just broken, and the first rays of sunshine are still on the other side of the hills of Belgrave as Climax locomotive no. 1964 rolls into Belgrave, with the clunking sound of its gears reverberating off the forest.
A cold wet day on top of a mountain. It’s a day when most will hide inside. Keeping dry and warm inside. However landscape photos rarely get taken from doorsteps. Venturing out and being part rather that apart gives a photographer that unique perspective.
Taken on a chilly December morning just before the sun rose. The exposure time is 32 seconds, which was accomplished with a cheap-o ($14) variable neutral density filter. The filter only goes to about 6.5 stops before the "x of death" appears, so 32 seconds was all I could get with this while making sure to no blow out highlights.
A bit of editing helped bring out the colors and shadows to produce one of the best images I have taken all year.

The other day as I was waiting for Ralph to decide whether it was too cold to go for a walk I decided to try and get a photo of the chickadees that were flitting around in the cedar tree at the edge of the road.
I was given a great gift. I turned on my camera and lifted it to focus on a chickadee and one landed on my camera. It sat there inches from my face just looking at me for several seconds before flying off. That was quite the thrill.
I took this shot after my close encounter.
