A Brief History
During the 1888-1889 academic year, William & Mary president Lyon G. Tyler taught the college’s first psychology course which was then listed under the Department of Moral Science, Political Economy, and Civil Government. The “Catalogue of the College of William and Mary and State Male Normal
School” for that year describes the program as follows:
There are two classes in this department, a Junior and a Senior.
In the Junior the elements of Psychology are set forth, and the faculties of the mind especially discussed in their relation to education. A thorough knowledge of the laws according to which the memory, imagination, and other faculties operate will be found of great value to the student in receiving and to the teacher in imparting information. Psychology is made to alternate with lectures on civil government. p. 24
William & Mary was with the times! According to the Encyclopedia of Higher Education, the late 1880s was when colleges in the US first began offering psychology courses.
In the fifty years that followed, psychology classes continued to be taught in several different departments, including Philosophy and Pedagogy, Philosophy and Psychology, Education, and eventually Psychology and Philosophy.
In the 1943-1944 catalog, Psychology is finally listed as its own department,
with five professors offering twelve courses. Over the years, it has grown dramatically – establishing graduate programs and offering many more
courses taught by an increasing number of faculty members.
Today, there are approximately thirty faculty, including visiting and adjuncts, who teach more than fifty course sections and numerous labs. The
publications selected for this exhibit show the varied research conducted by
the department’s faculty.

Professor Galano has been an inspiration and role model to students. Not only did they learn about the importance of their work, but they also became aware of the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to develop and maintain successful prevention and promotion programs.

Professor Zeman’s remarkable career leading up to her current position as chair of the psychology department includes research as part of an assessment team in Antarctica, cross-cultural research with William & Mary students in Ghana and Kenya, and coordinating the developmental-clinical psychology doctoral track at the University of Maine. She has been with William & Mary since August 2006 and her research is in the broad domain of developmental psychopathology, studying both normative and atypical emotional development in children and adolescents.

- Distributed Connectionist Representations (PDP - which is Parallel Distributed Processing was the start of Connectionism I had colleagues who did research in this area in the early 1990s, at the time I was not as curious as I could have been, being wrapped up in some completely different projects. Now - I have begun to tie it together, funny how that works! The classic work was done by James McClelland, David Rumelhart and the PDP Research Group. They wrote a two volume book: Parallel Distributed Processing: Explorations in the Microstructure of Cognition in 1986)

This workshop is a collaborative lab to creatively explore the contemporary approaches, practices and aesthetics of self organization and of complex systems within the dynamic couplings of mind, body and information/data flows.
This workshop is an open space for experimentation and inquiry within a well defined theoretical/aesthetic frame and open space format: the participants self-organize in different node projects (collaborative and flexible groups) in order to investigate and deploy bottom-up architectures as compositional prototyping strategies and processes. It explores interactivity plus generativity.
An embodied/distributed cognition approach is used to generate physical activities and games, guided discussions/conversations about relevant artists works and concepts exploring the aesthetic of complex systems and emergence.
Open source technologies and methodologies will be explored in combination with composition in real-time.
Inter and trans-disciplinary explorations are encouraged and diversity is the main asset.
Several nodes of research projects are suggested:

Last week I started as scientist in residence (SiR - the acronym is worth the title!) with DDB. According to the people who have done the research, this is apparently the first time an advertising agency has ever appointed a scientist to work with planners and account managers in-house. So, this is certainly as new to DDB as it is to the advertising world in general (and honestly, it is quite new to me as well).
I'll be around roughly a day per week at the DDB UK office in Paddington, working with their staff in very different ways, from scientific consultancy for specific campaigns and TV ads to training workshops for their staff and clients. From the few days I have spent with DDB, I can already feel that there is a huge interest and demand for understanding how our minds work and how this understanding can be used to create more effective campaigns.
In my main job I'm still a lecturer in psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, and like every good academic I'm usually busy with teaching, running research projects, giving talks, and writing scientific papers. I'm also a co-director of the Masters programme in Music, Mind and Brain, a very international and quite ambitious programme that covers the cognition and neuroscience of music perception.
Actually, my background has mainly been in music-related research so far. I obtained my PhD in systematic musicology (= the scientific study of music including acoustics, informatics, psychology, neuroscience etc.) but subsequently I worked on a large research project in Goldsmiths' computing department before I finally became a lecturer in psychology. And as you might guess from this short vita, my interests regarding how the mind works as well as the scientific methods and techniques I use are pretty broad. How music works in advertising, e.g. as kind of a soundtrack, as an audio logo or generally in sonic branding, is naturally one questions I have a heightened interest in.
But apart from the use of music in ads there are a zillion other issues in modern advertising that make for highly interesting academic research questions, not at least the methods of pre-testing and measuring ad effectiveness that seem to have been in practice for ages and have never really been challenged.
I'd like to get some of my brilliant Masters students of this year involved in that research, for example exploring implicit methods of assessing attitudes and behaviour towards ads and brands and comparing them to conventional explicit methods such as surveys and focus groups. What can we learn about what people think and do by asking them and by not asking them (but measure their behaviour)? It’s not hard to see that neuroscience and looking at brain activity is currently one of the hottest topics in advertising research and, over the next couple of months, I’m certainly going to look into whether it is worth the present hype and how it can inform advertising in practice. (You might have noticed the cautious undertone that the co-director of the Music Mind and Brain programme has carefully chosen to apply here.)
Anyway, pre-testing techniques, behavioural economics and neuro-marketing (how many buzzwords can you fit into one sentence?) are not all I’m interested in. Given my background in computing and machine learning I would love to explore how ideas (and ads) spread virally across communities and networks and how we can describe and predict emergent behaviour in social groups, be it on social networks sites or even in the real world. DDB seems to be pretty keen to explore that route which is related to the idea of ‘6° advertising’ as opposed to ‘360° advertising’ (you can probably tell by now that I’m working really hard towards getting my marketing lingo right).
Up to now I’ve talked to enthusiastic account mangers and planners working with very different brands, ranging from German cars to cat food, and everyone seems really keen to involve the new SiR in their upcoming campaign. The demand to talk to someone with a scientific perspective is huge and I will need to figure out how I can give everyone the best of my knowledge and support. (Maybe there is an internal competition that I haven’t been told about: Who can make most use of the SiR to maximally impress their client?)
Really, I’m looking forward to the next months and I’m not sure who will learn more, the DDB staff about the scientific understanding of the human mind or me about the crazy world of advertising in general and cat food in particular.

RULE #1 : Exercise boosts brain power.
The human brain evolved under conditions of almost constant motion. From this, one might predict that the optimal environment for processing information would include motion. That is exactly what one finds. Indeed, the best business meeting would have everyone walking at about 1.8 miles per hour.
Researchers studied two elderly populations that had led different lifestyles, one sedentary and one active. Cognitive scores were profoundly influenced. Exercise positively affected executive function, spatial tasks, reaction times and quantitative skills.
So researchers asked: If the sedentary populations become active, will their cognitive scores go up? Yes, it turns out, if the exercise is aerobic. In four months, executive functions vastly improve; longer, and memory scores improve as well.
Exercise improves cognition for two reasons:
– Exercise increases oxygen flow into the brain, which reduces brain-bound free radicals. One of the most interesting findings of the past few decades is that an increase in oxygen is always accompanied by an uptick in mental sharpness.
– Exercise acts directly on the molecular machinery of the brain itself. It increases neurons’ creation, survival, and resistance to damage and stress.
RULE #2 : The human brain evolved, too.
The brain is a survival organ. It is designed to solve problems related to surviving in an unstable outdoor environment and to do so in nearly constant motion (to keep you alive long enough to pass your genes on). We were not the strongest on the planet but we developed the strongest brains, the key to our survival.
The strongest brains survive, not the strongest bodies. Our ability to solve problems, learn from mistakes, and create alliances with other people helps us survive. We took over the world by learning to cooperate and forming teams with our neighbors.
Our ability to understand each other is our chief survival tool. Relationships helped us survive in the jungle and are critical to surviving at work and school today.
If someone does not feel safe with a teacher or boss, he or she may not perform as well. If a student feels misunderstood because the teacher cannot connect with the way the student learns, the student may become isolated.
There is no greater anti-brain environment than the classroom and cubicle.
RULE #3 : Every brain is wired differently.
What YOU do and learn in life physically changes what your brain looks like – it literally rewires it. We used to think there were just 7 categories of intelligence. But categories of intelligence may number more than 7 billion — roughly the population of the world.
No two people have the same brain, not even twins. Every student’s brain, every employee’s brain, every customer’s brain is wired differently.
You can either accede to it or ignore it. The current system of education ignores it by having grade structures based on age. Businesses such as Amazon are catching on to mass customization (the Amazon homepage and the products you see are tailored to your recent purchases).
Regions of the brain develop at different rates in different people. The brains of school children are just as unevenly developed as their bodies. Our school system ignores the fact that every brain is wired differently. We wrongly assume every brain is the same.
Most of us have a “Jennifer Aniston” neuron (a neuron lurking in your head that is stimulated only when Jennifer Aniston is in the room).
Theory of Mind : The ability to understand the interior motivations of someone else, and the ability to construct a predictable “theory of how their mind works” based on that knowledge. We try to see our entire world in terms of motivations, ascribing motivations to our pets and even to inanimate objects. The skill is useful for selecting a mate, navigating the day-to-day issues surrounding living together, for parenting. We have it like no other creature. It is as close to mind reading as we are likely to get.
People with advanced Theory of Mind skills possess the single most important ingredient for becoming effective communicators of information.

RULE #4 : We don’t pay attention to boring things.
What we pay attention to is profoundly influenced by memory. Our previous experience predicts where we should pay attention. Culture matters too. Whether in school or in business, these differences can greatly effect how an audience perceives a given presentation.
We pay attention to things like emotions, threats and sex. Regardless of who you are, the brain pays a great deal of attention to these questions: Can I eat it? Will it eat me? Can I mate with it? Will it mate with me? Have I seen it before?
The brain is not capable of multi-tasking. We can talk and breathe, but when it comes to higher level tasks, we just can’t do it.
Driving while talking on a cell phone is like driving drunk. The brain is a sequential processor and large fractions of a second are consumed every time the brain switches tasks. This is why cell-phone talkers are a half-second slower to hit the brakes and get in more wrecks.
Workplaces and schools actually encourage this type of multi-tasking. Walk into any office and you’ll see people sending e-mail, answering their phones, Instant Messaging, and on MySpace — all at the same time. Research shows your error rate goes up 50% and it takes you twice as long to do things.
When you’re always online you’re always distracted. So the always online organization is the always unproductive organization.
If a teacher can’t hold a student’s interest, knowledge will not be richly encoded in the brain’s database.
Brains in wild animals are 15%-30% larger than tame, domestic counterparts. The cold, hard world forced the wild animals into constant learning mode. It is the same with humans. The more activity you do, the larger and more complex it can become.
The brain cannot multi-task. It is a myth. The brain focuses attention on concepts sequentially, one at a time. Switching takes time.
RULE #5 : Repeat to remember.
The human brain can only hold about seven pieces of information for less than 30 seconds! Which means, your brain can only handle a 7-digit phone number. If you want to extend the 30 seconds to a few minutes or even an hour or two, you will need to consistently re-expose yourself to the information. Memories are so volatile that you have to repeat to remember.
Improve your memory by elaborately encoding it during its initial moments. Many of us have trouble remembering names. If at a party you need help remembering Mary, it helps to repeat internally more information about her. “Mary is wearing a blue dress and my favorite color is blue.” It may seem counter-intuitive at first but study after study shows it improves your memory.
Brain Rules in the classroom. In partnership with the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific University, Medina tested this Brain Rule in real classrooms of 3rd graders. They were asked to repeat their multiplication tables in the afternoons. The classrooms in the study did significantly better than the classrooms that did not have the repetition. If brain scientists get together with teachers and do research, we may be able to eliminate need for homework since learning would take place at school, instead of the home.
The first few seconds of encoding new information is crucial in determining whether something that is initially perceived will be remembered.
The more elaborately we encode information at the moment of learning, the stronger the memory. When encoding is elaborate and deep, the memory that forms is much more robust than when encoding is partial and cursory.
The neural pathways initially used to process new information end up becoming the permanent pathways the brain reuses to store the information. (Like the college professor that made no sidewalks in the new campus. He waited to see where students would walk anyway, then later paved the paths.)
The more a learning focuses on the meaning of the processed information, the more elaborately the encoding is processed.
When you are trying to drive a piece of information into your brain’s memory, make sure you understand exactly what that information means. If you are trying to drive information into someone else’s brain, make sure they understand what it means.
Don’t try to memorize by rote and pray the meaning will reveal itself!
The more repetition cycles a memory experienced, the more likely it is to persist in your mind. The space between repetitions is the critical component for transforming temporary memories into more persistent forms.
Spaced learning is greatly superior to massed learning.
Deliberately re-expose yourself to information *more elaborately*, in fixed spaced intervals, to make retrieval the most vivid it can be.
Learning occurs best when new information is incorporated gradually into the memory store rather than jammed in all at once.
Physically, “student” neurons need to get the same information from the “teacher” neuron within 90 minutes, or its excitement will vanish. The cell will literally reset itself to zero and act as if nothing happened.
Information must be repeated after a period of time has elapsed. If the information is repeatedly pulsed in discretely timed intervals, the relationship between teacher and student neuron begins to change, so increasingly smaller and smaller inputs from the teacher are required to elicit increasingly stronger and stronger outputs from the student.
Forgetting allows us to prioritize events. Events irrelevant to our survival will take up wasteful cognitive space if we assign them the same priority as events critical to our survival. So we don’t.
In school, every 3rd or 4th day would be reserved for reviewing the facts delivered in the previous 3-4 days. Previous information would be presented in compressed fashion. Inspect notes, comparing with what the teacher was saying in the review. That would result in a greater elaboration of the information. A formalized exercise in error-checking.
RULE #6 : Remember to repeat.
It takes years to consolidate a memory. Not minutes, hours, or days but years. What you learn in first grade is not completely formed until your sophomore year in high school.
Medina’s dream school is one that repeats what was learned, not at home, but during the school day, 90-120 minutes after the initial learning occurred. Our schools are currently designed so that most real learning has to occur at home.
How do you remember better? Repeated exposure to information / in specifically timed intervals / provides the most powerful way to fix memory into the brain.
Forgetting allows us to prioritize events. But if you want to remember, remember to repeat.
RULE #7 : Sleep well, think well.
When we’re asleep, the brain is not resting at all. It is almost unbelievably active! It’s possible that the reason we need to sleep is so that we can learn.
Sleep must be important because we spend 1/3 of our lives doing it! Loss of sleep hurts attention, executive function, working memory, mood, quantitative skills, logical reasoning, and even motor dexterity.
We still don’t know how much we need! It changes with age, gender, pregnancy, puberty, and so much more.
Napping is normal. Ever feel tired in the afternoon? That’s because your brain really wants to take a nap. There’s a battle raging in your head between two armies. Each army is made of legions of brain cells and biochemicals –- one desperately trying to keep you awake, the other desperately trying to force you to sleep. Around 3 p.m., 12 hours after the midpoint of your sleep, all your brain wants to do is nap.
Taking a nap might make you more productive. In one study, a 26-minute nap improved NASA pilots’ performance by 34 percent.
Don’t schedule important meetings at 3 p.m. It just doesn’t make sense.
Students given a series of math problems that all had a shortcut that was not revealed to them. Only 20% found the shortcut if answers had to be given same-day. But if asked after sleep, 60% found the shortcut. No matter how many times the experiment is run, the sleep group consistently outperforms the non-sleep group about to 3 to 1.
RULE #8 : Stressed brains don’t learn the same way.
You brain is built to deal with stress that lasts about 30 seconds. The brain is not designed for long term stress when you feel like you have no control. The saber-toothed tiger ate you or you ran away but it was all over in less than a minute. If you have a bad boss, the saber-toothed tiger can be at your door for years, and you begin to deregulate. If you are in a bad marriage, the saber-toothed tiger can be in your bed for years, and the same thing occurs. You can actually watch the brain shrink.
Stress damages virtually every kind of cognition that exists. It damages memory and executive function. It can hurt your motor skills. When you are stressed out over a long period of time it disrupts your immune response. You get sicker more often. It disrupts your ability to sleep. You get depressed.
The emotional stability of the home is the single greatest predictor of academic success. If you want your kid to get into Harvard, go home and love your spouse.
You have one brain. The same brain you have at home is the same brain you have at work or school. The stress you are experiencing at home will affect your performance at work, and vice versa.
RULE #9 : Stimulate more of the senses.
Our senses work together so it is important to stimulate them! Your head crackles with the perceptions of the whole world, sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, energetic as a frat party.
Smell is unusually effective at evoking memory. If you’re tested on the details of a movie while the smell of popcorn is wafted into the air, you’ll remember 10-50% more.
Smell is really important to business. When you walk into Starbucks, the first thing you smell is coffee. They have done a number of things over the years to make sure that’s the case.
The learning link. Those in multi-sensory environments always do better than those in uni-sensory environments. They have more recall with better resolution that lasts longer, evident even 20 years later.
– students learn better from words and pictures than words alone
– students learn better when corresponding words and pictures are presented simultaneously
– students learn better when corresponding words and pictures are presented near to each other rather than far from each on the page or screen
– students learn better when extraneous material is excluded rather than included
– students learn better from animation and narration than from animation and on-screen text
RULE #10 : Vision trumps all other senses.
We are incredible at remembering pictures. Hear a piece of information, and three days later you’ll remember 10% of it. Add a picture and you’ll remember 65%.
Pictures beat text as well, in part because reading is so inefficient for us. Our brain sees words as lots of tiny pictures, and we have to identify certain features in the letters to be able to read them. That takes time.
Why is vision such a big deal to us? Perhaps because it’s how we’ve always apprehended major threats, food supplies and reproductive opportunity.
Toss your PowerPoint presentations. It’s text-based (nearly 40 words per slide), with six hierarchical levels of chapters and subheads—all words. Professionals everywhere need to know about the incredible inefficiency of text-based information and the incredible effects of images. Burn your current PowerPoint presentations and make new ones.
RULE #11 : Male and female brains are different.
What’s different? Mental health professionals have known for years about sex-based differences in the type and severity of psychiatric disorders. Males are more severely afflicted by schizophrenia than females. By more than 2 to 1, women are more likely to get depressed than men, a figure that shows up just after puberty and remains stable for the next 50 years. Males exhibit more antisocial behavior. Females have more anxiety. Most alcoholics and drug addicts are male. Most anorexics are female.
Men and women handle acute stress differently. When researcher Larry Cahill showed them slasher films, men fired up the amygdale in their brain’s right hemisphere, which is responsible for the gist of an event. Their left was comparatively silent. Women lit up their left amygdale, the one responsible for details. Having a team that simultaneously understood the gist and details of a given stressful situation helped us conquer the world.
Men and women process certain emotions differently. Emotions are useful. They make the brain pay attention. These differences are a product of complex interactions between nature and nurture.
RULE #12 : We are powerful and natural explorers.
The desire to explore never leaves us despite the classrooms and cubicles we are stuffed into. Babies are the model of how we learn—not by passive reaction to the environment but by active testing through observation, hypothesis, experiment, and conclusion. Babies methodically do experiments on objects, for example, to see what they will do.
Google takes to heart the power of exploration. For 20 percent of their time, employees may go where their mind asks them to go. The proof is in the bottom line: fully 50 percent of new products, including Gmail and Google News, came from “20 percent time.”

I feel terrible, and very sorry. I have been telling my students, and have written here on this blog, that the seminal paper by Markus and Kitayama (1991) was originally a paper written by Markus (and Cross) about Hazel Markus and her own sense of self as a woman due to the existence of the earlier paper (Markus and Cross, 1990) which contained essentially the same dichotomy except situated as one existing between the self conceptions (or "modes of being," yess!) of men and women. I had thought that the already famous social psychologists, Hazel Markus, had simply enlisted the name of a Japanese nobody so as to reposition her insight as a cultural dichotomy. How wrong could I have been. I am very very sorry.
Shinobu Kitayama made it clear today in a brilliant presentation that initially, the independent vs interdependent self dichotomy was one which Shinobu Kitayama experienced in respect of his relationship with Hazel Markus his supervisory (or at least teacher) at that time. Presumably, he won her over. And the rest is history.
I had not been a big fan of Shinobu Kitayama's (non-Hazel) research. But today, I saw the light. He started his presentation in a typically Japanese humble way by saying how hard it is to follow a presentation by Hazel Markus and I thought "Yeah, sure. You are going to bomb!" But despite the fact that Hazel Markus' presentation was so good that I almost felt like crying (seriously, it was that good), Shinobu Kitayama's presentation was, wow, even more captivating: hard science, hard graft, compelling, proof. What a brilliant team, of two brilliant social psychologists, inspired, I now feel by Professor Shinobu Kitayama. Gosh. Wow. Respect.
That said, in any event I believe in interdependence and in the interdependent, co-creation of Kitayama and Markus' research.

A hypnopompic state (or hypnopomp) is the state of consciousness leading out of sleep, a term coined by the psychical researcher Frederic Myers. Its twin is the hypnagogic state at sleep onset; though often conflated, the two states are not identical. The hypnagogic state is rational waking cognition trying to make sense of non-linear images and associations; the hypnopompic state is emotional and credulous dreaming cognition trying to make sense of real world stolidity. They have a different phenomenological character. Depressed frontal lobe function in the first few minutes after waking – known as "sleep inertia" – causes slowed reaction time and impaired short-term memory. Sleepers often wake confused, or speak without making sense, a phenomenon the psychologist Peter McKeller calls "hypnopompic speech". When the awakening occurs out of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, in which most dreams occur, the hypnopompic state is sometimes accompanied by lingering vivid imagery. Some of the creative insights attributed to dreams actually happen in this moment of awakening from REM.

During the 1888-1889 academic year, William & Mary president Lyon G. Tyler taught the college’s first psychology course which was then listed under the Department of Moral Science, Political Economy, and Civil Government. The “Catalogue of the College of William and Mary and State Male Normal
School” for that year describes the program as follows:
There are two classes in this department, a Junior and a Senior.
In the Junior the elements of Psychology are set forth, and the faculties of the mind especially discussed in their relation to education. A thorough knowledge of the laws according to which the memory, imagination, and other faculties operate will be found of great value to the student in receiving and to the teacher in imparting information. Psychology is made to alternate with lectures on civil government. p. 24
William & Mary was with the times! According to the Encyclopedia of Higher Education, the late 1880s was when colleges in the US first began offering psychology courses.
In the fifty years that followed, psychology classes continued to be taught in several different departments, including Philosophy and Pedagogy, Philosophy and Psychology, Education, and eventually Psychology and Philosophy.
In the 1943-1944 catalog, Psychology is finally listed as its own department,
with five professors offering twelve courses. Over the years, it has grown dramatically – establishing graduate programs and offering many more
courses taught by an increasing number of faculty members.
Today, there are approximately thirty faculty, including visiting and adjuncts, who teach more than fifty course sections and numerous labs. The

Professor Galano has been an inspiration and role model to students. Not only did they learn about the importance of their work, but they also became aware of the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to develop and maintain successful prevention and promotion programs.

She has been with William & Mary since August 2006 and her research is in the broad domain of developmental psychopathology, studying both normative and atypical emotional development in children and adolescents.

If you could zoom into their faces you would see some suspicious wrinkles around their eyes. I suspect that those wrinkles are witnesses of tortures which are coming from the unnatural sitting position and the motionlessness... Thats why I don't like what they are doing. There is always a grimly looking guy who takes "care" of the situation and helps them with a big blanked to get out of the position. Thats why I call this kind of street art "levitating brutally". On the other hand they are fooling our cognition and whether nearly everybody knows how they do it, masses of people are looking at them for several minutes just to feel the impossibility... So at least I hope they get a good percentage, but I don't think so... Folks, I wish you a nice sunday and I hope we see us again tomorrow at 188...

After a vehicle ran a red light in the 6800 block of Platt Ave in West Hills, it collided with a truck driven by a 79-year-old, Mr. Dennis Platt. Mr Platt was ejected from his truck onto the asphalt with such force, he suffered severe head trauma, countless fractures, and went into cardiac arrest.
At this very moment, LAFD Fire Cadet Leo Kaufman was driving by and witnessed the accident. Leo instinctively pull over and jumped out of his vehicle into a chaotic scene. He quickly evaluated his surroundings and noticed a crowd standing around a patient that was face down, bloody, and severely injured. Bystanders stood by in shock, not knowing what to do. It was clear to Leo that if no action was taken, the patient would not survive.
Fortunately, Leo knew exactly what to do thanks to his LAFD Cadet Program CPR training. He relied on his training and rolled the trauma patient onto his back, initiating life-saving CPR. Despite some vocal people in the crowd second guessing his actions and contradicting his life-saving efforts, Cadet Kaufman worked relentlessly, performing chest compressions and circulating oxygen to the brain and heart of Mr. Platt. He did not know if his actions were going to be effective but he did know it was the only way to give this patient a chance at life.
Meanwhile, your LAFD firefighters were rushing to this scene with lights and sirens. As elite medical professionals they immediately rendered scene-safety, took over medical aid, quickly triaged, treated, and transported the patient to Kaiser hospital where a team of skilled healthcare workers took over.
Mr. Platt sustained very serious injuries which are too gruesome to share in detail but it was clear, his prognosis was not promising. Mr. Platt and his wife were told he should expect to be a quadriplegic, reliant on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. However, he regained full cognition (with mild memory loss) and is able to walk assisted (mechanical and human). His incredible rehabilitation and recovery at Kaiser Hospital is a story for another time.
This incident serves as a powerful example of the importance of Bystander CPR and the Chain of Survival. The "Chain of Survival" is a metaphor used to educate the public about their vital role in helping victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
The six steps in the chain of events that must occur in rapid succession to maximize the chances of survival from SCA are reliant on bystanders helping. Recognizing SCA, Calling 9-1-1 and Starting CPR are the first three steps and Cadet Kaufman's efforts to ensure all three were implemented gave Mr Platt his chance. The arrival of Your LAFD firefighter/paramedics ensured the remaining steps in the Chain of Survival were expediated, delivering Mr Platt into the skilled hands of the Kaiser Hospital staff.
Cadet Leo Kaufman, a 17-year-old young man, valiantly did what he was trained to do when it mattered most, and he did it extremely well!
Today, Your LAFD Fire Chief Kristen Crowley, with Mr and Mrs Platt, the LAFD crews on scene and Kaiser Hospital members present, was honored to present him with a Certificate of Appreciation which reads as follows:
" Leo J. Kaufman, LAFD Cadet. In recognition of your heroic courage and immediate assistance in saving a man's life during a cardiac arrest emergency on July 26, 2021, in the West Hills Community. The Los Angeles City Fire Department commends your extraordinary life-saving efforts of a citizen of the City of Los Angeles. Presented this 9th Day of August, 2022"

Professor Galano taught at William & Mary from 1977-2010 and served as a faculty member with the Virginia Consortium Program in Professional Psychology from 1978-2009. His research, teaching, advocacy, and public service have all been in the service of a single mission: health promotion and illness prevention. Professor Galano has been an inspiration and role model to students. Not only did they learn about the importance of their work, but they also became aware of the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to develop and maintain successful prevention and promotion programs.

Professor Zeman’s remarkable career leading up to her current position as chair of the psychology department includes research as part of an assessment team in Antarctica, cross-cultural research with William & Mary students in Ghana and Kenya, and coordinating the developmental-clinical psychology doctoral track at the University of Maine. She has been with William & Mary since August 2006 and her research is in the broad domain of developmental psychopathology, studying both normative and atypical emotional development in children and adolescents.

Professor Vishton has been with William & Mary for seven years and has focused his research on infant and adult perception, cognition, and action control. He notably developed a BabyKart which enables a pre-crawling baby to “drive” around a room.
The system provides a way to test how the onset of self-produced locomotion promotes mental development and may provide a therapeutic tool for motor-delayed children. Professor Vishton enjoys interacting with students in the lab.

Eiffel's tower in trocadero.Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors. It has historically been defined as an Intelligence Quotient score under 70.[1] Once focused almost entirely on cognition, the definition now includes both a component relating to mental functioning and one relating to individuals' functional skills in their environment. As a result, a person with a below-average intelligence quotient may not be considered mentally retarded. Syndromic mental retardation is intellectual deficits associated with other medical and behavioral signs and symptoms. Non-syndromic mental retardation refers to intellectual deficits that appear without other abnormalities.
The terms used for this condition are subject to a process called the euphemism treadmill. This means that whatever term is chosen for this condition, it eventually becomes perceived as an insult. The terms mental retardation and mentally retarded were invented in the middle of the 20th century to replace the previous set of terms, which were deemed to have become offensive. By the end of the 20th century, these terms themselves have come to be widely seen as disparaging and politically incorrect and in need of replacement.[2] The term intellectual disability or intellectually challenged is now preferred by most advocates in most English-speaking countries. The AAIDD have defined intellectual disability to mean the same thing as mental retardation.[3] Currently, the term mental retardation is used by the World Health Organization in the ICD-10 codes, which has a section titled "Mental Retardation" (codes F70–F79). In the future, the ICD-11 is expected to replace the term mental retardation with intellectual disability, and the DSM-5 is expected to replace it with intellectual developmental disorder.[4][5] Because of its specificity and lack of confusion with other conditions, mental retardation is still sometimes used professional medical settings around the world, such as formal scientific research and health insurance paperwork.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) research focuses on the original and ultimate goal of AI -- to create intelligence as a whole, by exploring all available paths, including theoretical and experimental computer science, cognitive science, neuroscience, and innovative interdisciplinary methodologies. AGI is also called Strong AI in the AI community.

A collaborative workshop interfacing movement art practices, digital creativity, portable computation and networked systems.
This workshop is a collaborative lab to creatively explore the contemporary approaches, practices and aesthetics of self organization and of complex systems within the dynamic couplings of mind, body and information/data flows.
This workshop is an open space for experimentation and inquiry within a well defined theoretical/aesthetic frame and open space format: the participants self-organize in different node projects (collaborative and flexible groups) in order to investigate and deploy bottom-up architectures as compositional prototyping strategies and processes. It explores interactivity plus generativity.
An embodied/distributed cognition approach is used to generate physical activities and games, guided discussions/conversations about relevant artists works and concepts exploring the aesthetic of complex systems and emergence.
Open source technologies and methodologies will be explored in combination with composition in real-time.
Inter and trans-disciplinary explorations are encouraged and diversity is the main asset.
Several nodes of research projects are suggested:
Sampling, recombinations and mashups
New Internet technologies (web 2.0) and collaborative creation

Personality disorders are included as mental disorders on Axis II of the diagnostic manual of the American Psychiatric Association and in the mental and behavioral disorders section of the ICD manual of the World Health Organization. Personality, defined psychologically, is the set of enduring behavioral and mental traits that distinguish human beings. Hence, personality disorders are defined by experiences and behaviors that differ from societal norms and expectations. Those diagnosed with a personality disorder may experience difficulties in cognition, emotiveness, interpersonal functioning or control of impulses. In general, personality disorders are diagnosed in 40–60 percent of psychiatric patients, making them the most frequent of all psychiatric diagnoses.
These behavioral patterns in personality disorders are typically associated with substantial disturbances in some behavioral tendencies of an individual, usually involving several areas of the personality, and are nearly always associated with considerable personal and social disruption. A person is classified as having a personality disorder if their abnormalities of behavior impair their social or occupational functioning. Additionally, personality disorders are inflexible and pervasive across many situations, due in large part to the fact that such behavior may be ego-syntonic (i.e. the patterns are consistent with the ego integrity of the individual) and are, therefore, perceived to be appropriate by that individual. This behavior can result in maladaptive coping skills, which may lead to personal problems that induce extreme anxiety, distress or depression. The onset of these patterns of behavior can typically be traced back to early adolescence and the beginning of adulthood and, in some instances, childhood.
There are many issues with classifying a personality disorder, is it really a disorder; or just hard to get along with. There are many categories of definition, some mild and some extreme. Because the theory and diagnosis of personality disorders stem from prevailing cultural expectations, their validity is contested by some experts on the basis of invariable subjectivity. They argue that the theory and diagnosis of personality disorders are based strictly on social, or even sociopolitical and economic considerations. Cluster A (odd or eccentric disorders)
Not to be confused with Type A personality.
Paranoid personality disorder: characterized by irrational suspicions and mistrust of others.
Schizoid personality disorder: lack of interest in social relationships, seeing no point in sharing time with others, anhedonia, introspection.
Schizotypal personality disorder: characterized by odd behavior or thinking.
Cluster B (dramatic, emotional or erratic disorders)
Not to be confused with Type B personality.
Antisocial personality disorder: a pervasive disregard for the rights of others, lack of empathy, and (generally) a pattern of regular criminal activity.
Borderline personality disorder: extreme "black and white" thinking, instability in relationships, self-image, identity and behavior often leading to self-harm and impulsivity.
Histrionic personality disorder: pervasive attention-seeking behavior including inappropriately seductive behavior and shallow or exaggerated emotions.
Narcissistic personality disorder: a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Characterized by self-importance, preoccupations with fantasies, belief that they are special, including a sense of entitlement and a need for excessive admiration, and extreme levels of jealousy and arrogance.
Cluster C (anxious or fearful disorders)
Avoidant personality disorder: pervasive feelings of social inhibition and social inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to negative evaluation and avoidance of social interaction.
Dependent personality disorder: pervasive psychological dependence on other people.
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (not the same as obsessive-compulsive disorder): characterized by rigid conformity to rules, moral codes and excessive orderliness.

While the cerebral cortex’s role in cognition has long been recognized, the cerebellum’s role has largely been ignored. But these two parts of the brain share an elaborate network of connections. Some 40 million neurons in the cerebral cortex have fiber-like axons extending to the pontine nuclei in the brainstem, an area intimately connected to the cerebellum. Extensive connections go in the other direction, too, from the cerebellum up to the cortex.
