The Sukhoi Su-27 heavy air superiority fighter - codenamed 'Flanker' by NATO - was designed during the Cold War as a Soviet counter to potential Western opponents such as the US Air Force's F-15 Eagle. It first flew in 1977. Service entry began during 1985, and when the 'Flanker' started appearing at Western air displays in the hands of Sukhoi test pilots, starting at Paris in 1989, it astounded spectators with its manoeuvrability.

In the post-Soviet era, the original Su-27 series has continued to equip the Russian armed forces, and carried on serving with the Ukrainian Air Force as well as other former Soviet states and several export customers. The design has continued to be developed for both Russia and overseas markets, some of the latest derivatives incorporating thrust vectoring.

The Ukrainian Su-27s (one P model and one UB model) that are coming to Fairford for RIAT 2019 are on the strength of the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade, based at Myrhorod in central Ukraine.

Sadly she was captured by the enemy, in France, in late 1943 and detained in Germany where she was executed, as a spy, the following year. Despite fierce interrogation and torture by the Gestapo during her captivity, history has it she never 'broke' or provided the enemy with any information.

Utah Beach in Normandy

Utah Beach was the codename for the right flank or westernmost of the Allied landing beaches during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, as part of Operation Overlord on 6 June 1944. Utah was added to the invasion plan toward the end of the planning stages, when more landing craft became available.

Utah Beach, about 3 miles (5 km) long, was the westernmost of the five landing beaches, located between Pouppeville and the village of La Madeleine,[1] which became the right flank anchor of the allied offensive along the left bank (western bank) of the Douve river estuary.[2] German sector code was W5;

Despite being substantially off course, the U.S. 4th Infantry Division (part of the VII corps) landed there with relatively little resistance, in contrast to Omaha Beach where the fighting was fierce.

[WIP] Sowjet Tractor Codename "Kasimir"

One of my favorite commissions to date, a 20' Dunny for a great Aussie collector.

So, my project's codename is "Otter". For reasons that will become apparent quite soon. And this has kinda developed a life of its own. For example, code reviews get signed off on with an otter picture. And we all have plush otters on our desks. And things like that.

So realizing that there's otter statues in the middle of Pioneer Square in Portland.. Yeah. Felix and I even let Ed be an otter for the evening.

Operation Overlord

Operation Overlord, the Allied codename for the invasion of Normandy, involved more than 150,000 men and 5,000 ships. It consisted of American, British, Canadian, Polish, and Free French Armies under command of General Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force (the choice of Eisenhower was officially made by President Roosevelt in December 1943, and agreed upon by the British).

The Deputy Supreme Commander of the invasion was British Air Chief Marshal Arthur W. Tedder, who had been the commander of the Allied Air Forces in the Mediterranean. While British Admiral Bertram H. Ramsay, was appointed naval commander. He had conducted the evacuation at Dunkirk and also planned the Torch landing in North Africa. British Air Chief Marshal Trafford L. Leigh-Mallory was appointed as commander of the air forces.

Montgomery was chosen as the ground forces' commander, despite his well-known personality problems. Eisenhower's first choice was in fact General Harold Alexander, but Churchill needed Alexander to remain in Italy. Montgomery arrived in Britain in January 1944 and began to evaluate the feasibility of the operation. He proposed the expansion of the invasion area to include landings west of the Vire River - allowing for the encirclement of Cherbourg (this would later become Utah Beach).

The Deception - Operation Fortitude

Elaborate efforts were taken in order to deceive the Germans into thinking that a massive Allied force was concentrated in Kent - just opposite Pas de Calais. Command of the fake army (known as the US 1st Army Group) was given to General George S. Patton in order to lend validity to the Army Group. Radio traffic was faked, plywood and canvas installations were constructed, inflatable tanks and vehicles were used extensively in order to deceive the Germans. In all, the plan called Operation Fortitude, was considered a great success in keeping the German High Command guessing about where the real invasion would come from. It would be instrumental in causing the Germans to withhold units once D-Day began. On a side note, Patton would later take command of the US Third Army in Normandy after the landings and during the breakout phase of the campaign.

The Type 054A (NATO codename Jiangkai II) frigate is a Chinese multi-role warship class, the first of which entered service with the People's Liberation Army Navy Surface Force in 2007. The class is planned to comprise 24+ vessels. As of 2015, 18 are in service, 4 are fitting out, and 2 are under construction. It is a development of the Type 054 frigate, using the same hull but with improved sensors and weapons.

The Type 054A was first revealed while under construction at the Guangzhou-based Huangpu Shipyard in 2005.

The Type 054A carries HQ-16 medium-range air defence missiles and various anti submarine rockets in a VLS system. The HQ-16 provides area air defence from all engagement angles up to a range of 50 km, a considerable improvement over the HQ-7 carried on the Type 054 which have inferior range and limited engagement angles. Contrary to HQ-9 VLS on Type 052C destroyer which adopts a cold launch method, HQ-16 appears to adopt a hot launch method instead, with the same design principle of US Mk 41 VLS: a shared common exhaust system is sited between the two rows of rectangular launching tubes. The VLS system is also capable of firing anti-submarine missiles.

The 4 AK-630 close-in weapon systems (CIWS) of the Type 054 were replaced with 2 Type 730 CIWS on the Type 054A. The autonomous Type 730 provides improved reaction time against close-in threats.

The 100 mm main gun on earlier Type 054 class is replaced by H/PJ26 stealthy 76 mm dual purpose gun mount, which is a Chinese development of Russian AK-176. The adoption of smaller caliber gun is the result of the need of higher rate of fire for air defense, including sea-skimming anti-ship missiles. H/PJ26 utilizes advanced synthetic material such as fiber glass to a much greater degree than the original AK-176, resulting in over 30% of weight reduction to 11.5 ton of H/PJ26, as opposed to the 16.8+ tons of AK-176.

This is World War Two Type-K/Q Decoy Bombing Airfield used from 1940 (Type-K consisted of a replica Airfield with various Dummy Aircraft and Type-Q displayed a sequence of lights, when seen at night resembled an active airfield) It was also referred to as 'Swaffham', and was used to protect nearby RAF Marham Airfield. It closed in 1943 when RAF North Pickenham Airfield was constructed, although the concrete Shelters remained until 1968. Dummy Wellingtons were moved around by tractors, which proved convincing enough to result in two huge landmine craters !

The first Bombing Decoy Airfields were known as K Sites, these were for day use and were set out on large fields, heath or warrens, sometimes on disused World War Two Airfields. Props would include Dummy Aircraft, it would depend on which Airfield was being protected. There would be mock Bomb Dumps and Fuel Stores, the surface would be levelled to look like a Landing Ground. Impressed civilian aircraft, such as de Havilland DH Moths, were employed on some Sites to resemble de Havilland Tiger Moth Military Training Aircraft. Large sheets of canvas were painted and laid on the ground to represent Hangars and in some cases, old and disused vehicles were set around the Site along with Gun Pits and Camouflage Nets. These 'Dummy Airfields' looked very realistic from the air. The Crews had their own buildings and trucks. Most K Sites were closed down between 1942 to 1943 although a few were still in use in 1944.

Even at ground level they could deceive. 'A young lad, out for a walk with family and friends in the Summer of 1940, he spotted some Wellington Bombers dispersed on an Airfield near Thetford. For three hours they waited for one to start up and take-off. A few days later, his father came home laughing his head off and said ā€œ We might well have waited for those planes to take off last Sunday, they were Dummies !ā€

Q Sites, which were sometimes on the same site as a K Site, but were for night use, from the air they would have looked like a Runway Flarepath and, for authenticity, had light patterns that included obstruction lights, these were red and placed on Hangars and other tall buildings to stop our aircraft landing on them by mistake. Later a bar of red lights was placed across the Flarepath and could be seen when on approach. This was added after a number of our own Aircraft had attempted to land, sometimes with fatal consequences, some of the early Dummy Flarepaths were created using Gooseneck Flares.

The Q Site Crew had a powerful Chance Light (similar to a small searchlight) on top of their Control Bunker, codenamed ''Scarecrow'', and this could be used to simulate aircraft taking off, landing and taxiing. Power was provided by generators within the Control Bunker, built to a similar design to a small Nissen Hut, but each one appeared to differ. Some Sites had a Control Bunker above ground whereas on others it was below ground, and some Sites had both types. One end was covered by tin sheeting, which was the Operations Room with the Runway Light Controls and a Telephone connected to the Headquarters Station, there were some basic comforts such as a Tortoiseshell stove and table, etc. The other room housed the Generator and was covered with steel sheeting or arched pre-formed concrete, feed pipes ran to the Generator from the fuel tank outside. Normally there were two 15in Ducts for air intake and one for the exhaust. Between the rooms there was a passageway that led outside, protected by a Blast Wall. There was another exit, sometimes vertical from the Operations Room. ''Q'' Sites were still being built for the RAF and USAAF in 1943 to 1944, with the last ones closing down at the end of the war.

In order to draw the enemy bombers from our towns and cities, Dummy Towns known as ''Starfish'' Sites were set up on open land between one and eight miles from the intended target. In daylight the equipment resembled chicken sheds, etc, but when ignited at night the boilers and fire baskets looked just like bombs exploding, incendiaries burning and buildings on fire, these effects could be made to last a number of hours. ''QL'' Lights were added to Starfish Sites but on their own sites, were designed so that at night they could look like factories, marshalling yards, shipyards, steelworks, etc. ''QL'' Lights ingeniously included welding flashes, railway signals (red and green) red railway crossing gate lights, tram car electrical flashes, standard lamps, and they could also be made to look like open skylights, doors and windows where someone carelessly had not complied with the Blackout regulations.

As a fan of the Lexus SC400 coupe of the early 1990's, I was happy to see the brand release a new grand tourer. Introduced in 2017, the LC500 (codename Z100) looks simply spectacular - and this is one of those cases where the pictures do not do the car justice!

Power comes from a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated 32-valve V8 producing 471 PS. The rear drive coupe can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4,5 seconds.

It isn't cheap - prices open at $92,000 - but it looks amazing. The display car, finished in Infrared over Toasted Caramel leather interior, is in the exact combination that I would spec if I had the money to purchase it.
