Operation Dynamo was the code name for a military evacuation operation by the British Admiralty during the Second World War, in which 85 percent of the bulk of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and parts of the French Army were transported to England by ship. These units were encircled by the Wehrmacht at the Battle of Dunkirk, where a hold order - which has not been definitively clarified to this day - for the rapidly advancing German armoured troops opened a window of opportunity for the Allies to evacuate 338,226 soldiers, 198,229 of them British and 139,997 French, from 26 May to 4 June 1940, leaving almost all of their equipment behind. This largest rescue operation in world history up to that time formed the basis for Britain's staying power, because the loss of almost the entire British professional army could not have been compensated for at that time.

Uncle Beach/Oranjemolen

Grass-topped dyke, located east of the Oranje dyke mill. Former entrance to Slijk harbour, codenamed Uncle Beach by the Allied forces during the landing at Vlissingen.

The first British troops to land on Walcheren did so on the fortified seafront at Vlissingen. Less heavily defended beaches outside the town and east of the harbor were rejected, the ground being flooded and the wrong side of the Walcheren Canal. The landing site, codenamed Uncle Beach by the Allied forces, was south-east of the town centre, near the Oranje dyke mill, in the Eastern or Dock harbour.

Around the Oranjemolen the town of Vlissingen is planning to realize a World War II memorial site. At this site information will be provided about Vlissingen and the Walcheren region during World War II, the Battle of the Scheldt and the consequences of World War II for the civilian population.

Aston Martin DB7 in Joe's Garage

History:

The DB7, known internally as the XX project, was made mostly with resources from Jaguar Cars and had the financial backing of the Ford Motor Company, owner of Aston Martin from 1988 to 2007. The DB7's platform is an evolution of the Jaguar XJS platform, though with many changes.

The DB7 began life as a successor to the Jaguar XJS envisioned by Tom Walkinshaw of TWR. Walkinshaw had been impressed by the XJS' potential after driving it in the European Touring Car Championship in the late 1970s and early 1980s and wanted to re-body the car so it would have more modern styling. He initially wanted to engage Peter Stevens to design such a car but he refused due to his on going projects as the time. Walkinshaw then engaged Ian Callum, who was new in the car design work at the time, to design the car.

Jaguar had been struggling to replace the XJS due to its weak financial position. A project codenamed the XJ41/42 (41 for the coupé, 42 for the convertible) was already in development stage in the company, mooted to be called the F-Type when completed and was designed by Keith Helfet. When American automobile manufacturer Ford acquired both Jaguar and Aston Martin, the new management cancelled the XJ41/42 project in 1990 because of the car's heavier weight than the XJS, the project's high budget and also the employee overtime spent on the car. Seeing the potential of the abandoned project, Walkinshaw based his concept on the XJ41 and tasked Ian Callum to design his envisioned body around the XJ41. He presented the completed car to Jaguar's management who rejected it.

Due to the development of the Jaguar XJ220, Ford had not been very keen on development of new Aston Martin models due to high development costs and the wake of the 1990s economic downturn. Aston Martin CEO at the time, Walter Hayes approached Walkinshaw as he had seen the potential in Walkinshaw's proposition to succeed. Development started with a project name of XX. Ian Callum was again tasked to redesign the car so it would look like an Aston Martin. Due to a limited financial backing at the time, the final product shared many components from other marques owned by Ford. The tail lights came from the Mazda 323 F, the Chrome door handles came from the Mazda 323 Estate, the turn signals came from the Mazda MX-5 and the interior door mirror switches came from the Ford Scorpio. The only foreign component would be the wing mirrors which were shared with the Citroën CX. The whole project cost US$30 million.

On 1 January 1993, Jac Nasser was appointed the new chairman of Ford Europe. He presented the finished car, which had yet to be named, to the general public at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show. Due to the positive and overwhelming reception, the car was put into production as the Aston Martin DB7

This turning point in the war has a special significance to me and my family due to my Great Grandfather being one of the many men that day that risked their lives. Thankfully he survived and earned a Purple Heart for his service, so seeing the this commemorative engine leading 66X was really nice.

With 1,042 m height, the Čerchov (German: Schwarzkopf) is the highest mountain in the Upper Palatine Forest (Český les) and the northern summit of the Bohemian Forest. It lies ca. 2 km from the German-Czech border, roughly in the middle of a triangle formed by the villages of Waldmünchen, Furth im Wald and Domažlice.

After its use by the Wehrmacht in the Second World War the summit was intensively used by the Warsaw Pact until the 1990s as a surveillance station and was placed out of bounds to the public. A large tower was built in 1987 by the Czechoslovak Army which is used today for flight safety purposes and is not accessible. Other surveillance posts were sited inter alia on the Velký Zvon (German: Plattenberg, with a tower of very similar design built in 1978 and which had line-of-sight to the Čerchov site) and the Dyleň. As well as the Soviet Army the site was also used by Hauptabteilung III of the East German Stasi as a listening post (codenamed RUBIN). The mountain offers an all-round view of the Bavarian Forest and the Czech Plain. In good weather conditions, the Alps may be seen.

One route to the Čerchov is the Hana-Steig, which more than 100 years old. It is one of the finest hiking routes in this area.

Project "Morphase" was the brainchild of Dr. Carter, a revolutionary attempt to control sleep cycles in order to create the perfect soldier, devoid of fear and fatigue. But, as often happens, science played a dangerous game, and they encountered something they couldn't control.

His own creation, the prototype codenamed "Object Zero," was beginning to show signs of uncontrollability. Dr. Carter would have to face the consequences of ambitions gone wild...

17th July 2017 - Panavia Tornado GR.4 'ZG750' (better known as Pinky) of the Royal Air Forces XV(R) Squadron originally from RAF Lossiemouth, but now based at RAF Marham departs the RIAT.

This squadron saw active service during Operation Granby, the UK’s codename for the Gulf War and the aircraft carries 11 ‘battle honours’ on its tail, recalling the Tornado’s almost continuous service on operations worldwide since 1991.

I'm so pleased to have finally caught this as its due to be retired and sent for spares reclamation in the beginning of August. There is a campaign to get her saved as a museum exhibit.

This windswept stretch of beach was very peaceful when I visited a number of years ago. But on June 6, 1944 this stretch of Normandy beach by the town of Courseulles-sur-Mer, and given the codename Juno Beach by the allied command, was a living hell to those brave young Canadian men who landed there as part of the D-Day invasion. 359 young Canadians were killed and another 715 were wounded that fateful day, but the mission was successful and just over 11 months later, Germany surrendered ending WWII in Europe. Take a moment today to remember the sacrifice these brave young men and all the other allied troops made that day on the Normandy beaches.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 fighter was a formidable foe when the aircraft, first flown in 1977, initially appeared. This tactical fighter, codenamed 'Fulcrum' by NATO, was rugged yet very agile, and would have been more than a match for its Western opponents in the latter years of the Cold War. The Polish Air Force solo MiG-29 comes from one of two squadrons - the 41st Tactical Squadron based at Malbork, or the 1st Tactical Squadron based at Mińsk Mazowiecki. Together, these units operate a total of 28 single-seat MiG-29As and eight two-seat MiG-29UBs.

The Dam Busters March by The Band of The RAF Regiment:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7Si2H479Es

On the night of 16-17 May 1943, Wing Commander Guy Gibson led 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force on an audacious bombing raid to destroy three dams in the Ruhr valley, the industrial heartland of Germany. The mission was code named Operation 'Chastise'.

The dams were fiercely protected. Torpedo nets in the water stopped underwater attacks and anti-aircraft guns defended them against enemy bombers.

In late March 1943, a new squadron was formed to carry out the raid on the dams. Initially codenamed Squadron X, 617 Squadron was led by 24-year old Wing Commander Guy Gibson and was made up of aircrew from Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. With one month to go before the raid, and with only Gibson knowing the full details of the operation, the squadron began intensive training in low-level night flying and navigation. They were ready for Operation 'Chastise'.

But 617 Squadron had a secret weapon: the 'bouncing bomb'.

The three main targets were the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams. The Möhne dam was a curved 'gravity' dam and was 40m high and 650m long. There were tree-covered hills around the reservoir, but any attacking aircraft would be exposed on the immediate approach. The Eder dam was of similar construction but was an even more challenging target. Its winding reservoir was bordered by steep hills. The only way to approach would be from the north. The Sorpe was a different type of dam and had a watertight concrete core 10m wide. At each end of its reservoir the land rose steeply, and there was also a church spire in the path of the attacking aircraft.

From 9.28pm on 16 May, 133 aircrew in 19 Lancasters took off in three waves to bomb the dams. Gibson was flying in the first wave and his aircraft was first to attack the Möhne at 12.28am, but five aircraft had to drop their bombs before it was breached. The remaining aircraft still to drop their bombs then attacked the Eder, which finally collapsed at 1.52am. Meanwhile, aircraft from the two other waves bombed the Sorpe but it remained intact.

.Of the 133 aircrew that took part, 53 men were killed and three became prisoners of war. On the ground, almost 1,300 people were killed in the resulting flooding. Although the impact on industrial production was limited, the raid gave a significant morale boost to the people of Britain.

The surviving aircrew of 617 Squadron were lauded as heroes, and Guy Gibson was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the raid. The raid also established 617 Squadron as a specialist precision bombing unit, experimenting with new bomb sights, target marking techniques and colossal new 'earthquake' bombs developed by Barnes Wallis.

NATO codename "Fishpot". The Russian Su-9 was a two-person attack mecha (one pilot and one navigator), utilising an antigrav (антигравитационный) engine which allowed the vehicle to hover a few inches above the regolith. These craft were thus restricted to the relatively flat terrain of the lunar maria. Owing to their compact design, the Fishpots could be aligned in a row to form a defensive wall against the American forces.
