The Cock, Kingsthorpe, Northampton. I decided not to include most of the side down Mill lane due to large shadows, but concentrated on the frontage along Harborough Road for the time being. I`ll probably go for a different take on this later in the year when the sun is higher. 11th January 2014.

Cockscomb flowers are also known as Wool Flowers or Brain Celosia, suggestive of a highly colored brain. The flowers belong to the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. Cockscomb blooms with a compacted crested head 2-5 inches across, on leafy stems that are 12-28 inches long. The flower's name is suggestive of a rooster's comb. Fighting Cocks (Nyabung) These portraits of fighting cocks (manok sabong) and their owners were taken during my fieldwork among Iban communities in West Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) between 2002-2011.
From a very young age Iban boys receive their first chick fighting cock, which they nurture into a full-grown fighter. They take the chicks with them when swimming in the river, massage its legs to enhance its strength and arrange small training fights with their peers.
Besides from being important arenas for recreational and ritual activity cockfights are often used by the Iban to settle internal disagreement and disputes. In this remote part of Indonesia where state institutions are weak, customary law still plays a crucial role in conflict settlement.
Cocks are equipped with razor-sharp spurs (taji), tied securely to the back of each cock’s legs, and intended to wreak maximum damage on the opponent. The wagering
that precedes a cockfight is much longer than the actual fight, lasting up to half-anhour.
The cockfight itself may last only a few seconds, as the birds leap at oneanother, or one bird runs away from the other and is disqualified.

This is a 2001 picture when she was a puppy. The picture was made on 35mm (Nikon N50 with Fujifilm Superia 100), and that´s why it has no EXIF info.
This fellow has been around for some time and covers quite a large territory. I fear for him as he is getting so brave.
A rooster, also called a cock or chanticleer is a male chicken (Gallus gallus), the female being called a hen. Immature male chickens of less than a year's age are called cockerels. The oldest term is "cock", from Old English coc. It is sometimes replaced by the term "cockerel" (which properly refers to a young male chicken) in the United Kingdom, and almost always by "rooster" (a relative neologism) in North America and Australia. "Cock" is in general use as the name for a male of other species of bird, for example "Cock sparrow". "Roosting" is the action of perching aloft to sleep at night, and is actually done by both sexes. The rooster is polygamous, but cannot guard several nests of eggs at once. He guards the general area where his hens are nesting, and will attack other roosters who enter his territory. During the daytime, he often sits on a high perch, usually 4–5 feet off the ground, to serve as a lookout for his flock. He will sound a distinctive alarm call if predators are nearby.

The Watercock Gallicrex cinerea is a waterbird in the rail and crake family Rallidae. It is the only member of the genus Gallicrex. Their breeding habitat is swamps across south Asia from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to south China, Japan and Indonesia. They nest in a dry location on the ground in marsh vegetation, laying 3-6 eggs. These large rails are mainly permanent residents throughout their range.
The body of this rail is flattened laterally to allow easier passage through the reeds or undergrowth. It has long toes and a short tail. Female birds are smaller at 36 cm, and are dark brown above and paler below. the plumage is streaked and barred with darker markings. The bill is yellow and the legs are green. The downy chicks are black, as with all rails. Watercock are quite secretive, but are sometimes seen out in the open. They are noisy birds, especially at dawn and dusk, with a loud, gulping call.
