Abberley is home to Abberley Hall School, a preparatory school set in the grounds of Abberley Hall, which also contain the Abberley Clock Tower, the setting for the children's book by Gene Kemp, The Clock Tower Ghost.
The name Abberley probably relates to the 6th century Saxon chief Eobald, by way of Eobaldelega, then Eobaldsleigh. Abberley is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086-7 as Edboldelege, when it was The Clock Tower was commissioned in 1882 and plans were drawn up by the architect J.P. St. Aubyn. The builders were Patman and Fotheringham and their master mason was George Long.
Work began on 29th June 1883 and the topping out was on lst October 1884. On 10th June 1885 a final account was rendered for a total cost of £7980.
The height of the Clock Tower is 161 feet. It has three lower rooms, a sewing room and a clock room as well as two flushing WC's (no longer in use).
The clock is by J.B. Joyce of Whitchurch, the firm which still services it.
The building is certainly prominent and can be seen from six counties. The carillon consisted of 16 bells weighing a total of 21 tons. These were raised into position through a series of trapdoors in each of the floors between ground level and the belfry. The heavy sound louvres are made of 1 1/4 inch plate glass, which have survived intact save one which was broken by a thunderbolt in 1969. Features include the four mosaic clock faces, a sundial and the Jones coat of arms.

In 1880, John Joseph Jones, a man of substantial wealth, inherited the Abberley Hall estate. Two years later he commissioned a carillon and clock tower, to be built on Merritt's Hill due north of Abberley Hall. Work began in June 1883 and the edifice was completed in October 1884. This was remarkable progress at a time that most building materials had to be delivered to the site by horse transport, as contemporary photographs show.

This old clock requires to be wound up once a week but didn`t seem to be keeping time when I visited!

This is a clock that was inspired by an African Artist though I took the open aperature idea and used it with the image of the state of Florida. I hope to do the same with a variety of States and countries along with featured native animals.
I see a lot of brown pelicans when I kayak or wander around in wild places or go to the beach etc. They are such a dramatic part of this state and I had to woodburn their image and then stain and create the clock.

Close up of my Great Grandfather and Grandfather's clock from the late 1800's. I've had it completely rebuilt. The clocksmith told me to expect it to be off +/- 5 mintues/week. It's off +/- 5 seconds a week. Better than new!
My first time using Diafine and Tri-X. What a combination. I was really worried that the mid-tones would disappear shooting at ISO 1600, but everything's there. As an experiment, I shot each scene at 11600 and 800. The 800 had a definite lack of contrast and looked flat. 1600 it is.

Par manque de pièces, elle n'a pas encore une grande autonomie, mais dure plusieurs minutes.

The clock indicates the seconds, minutes and hours.
The Cuckoo ( a parrot lol ) is set to trigger once per hour.
For lack of parts, it still lacks a lot of autonomy, but lasts for several minutes.
This clock is straight out of the mid 1980s. It is in almost new old stock condition. The only evidence of any use is on the battery lid from where the previous owner had changed the battery. This clock has a unique 2 tone alarm

The Colgate Clock, located at the Colgate-Palmolive factory in Clarksville, Indiana is one of the largest clocks in the world. It has a diameter of 40 feet. It was first illuminated in Clarksville on 11/17/1924. It is located directly across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky.
Before the factory was bought by Colgate, it served as the Indiana Reformatory South. It opened in 1847. In 1919 there was a fire and caused the need for much money to be spent in order to restore it to full operating capacity. The state of Indiana decided to relocate the prison and Colgate bought the building in 1923. Designed by Colgate engineer Warren day and constructed by the Seth Thomas Clock Company for the centennial for the Colgate Company in 1906, the clock served as the original Colgate Clock at Colgate-Palmolive facilities located in Jersey City, New Jersey.
