An ex DRS livery class 47714 sits inside the Crewe Heritage Centre

Class 47 47403 is pictured at Newcastle Central on December 22nd 1977. Originally D1502, it has survived into preservation.

Nothing says Scotland quite like a class 26 on a harbourside freight train.

Relatively new(ish) British Rail Class 755 3 car diesel electric Bi-Mode Multiple Unit (BMU) 755327 working the 2D82 14:17 (14:30 RT) Ipswich - Lowestoft Greater Anglia service train at Woodbridge Station in the County of Suffolk (UK).

755327 was built for Greater Anglia by Stadler Rail at their facility in Bussnang Switzerland as one of the Stadler 'FLIRT' (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) modular family of trainsets.

The Class 755 bi-mode units should not be confused with the very similar looking Stadler Rail 'FLIRT' Class 745 Electric (only) Multiple Units which were introduced by Greater Anglia in 2020.

Note the Dellner type coupling system in the big ugly hole at the front of the train. The Dellner coupling is a version of the Scharfenberg coupler which connects pneumatics and electronics at the same point of contact. Also note the power pack vehicle located between the first and second coach.

Number 1 end of preserved British Rail Class 14 'Teddy Bear' 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic locomotive 14901 at the heritage Colne Valley Railway near Castle Hedingham in Essex (UK).

14901 was built at British Railways Swindon Works and entered service as D9524 in December 1964. With an incredibly short service life D9524 was withdrawn from the mainline for use in the private sector in April 1969.

D9524 finally entered preservation In August 1981. The locomotive never wore this 'BR Blue' livery, 14901 TOPS number, twin headcode marker lights or British Rail double arrow logo in service. These have all been added post preservation.

In railway terminology, 14901 is painted in a 'fictitious livery' that has made it to the real thing. Diehard enthusiasts including me will argue all day long of the right and wrongs of locomotive fictitious liveries but in this case, I approve. ;-)

40 year old British Rail Class 315 4 car 25kV EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) 315837 leads the 8 car 2W90 10:42 (10:49 RT) TfL Rail London Liverpool Street- Shenfield service train northbound at Stratford Station on the Great Eastern Main Line in East London (UK).

Class 315 EMU's were built by BREL (British Rail Engineering Ltd) in 1980/1 and were based on the then new 1972 British Rail 'standard' EMU design.

315837 is one of the last 315 units still in service as most have been withdrawn/scrapped and replaced by the Class 345 Aventra Elizabeth 'Crossrail' Line EMU's which of course the TfL Rail London- Shenfield Metro GEML will form a part of.

British Rail Class 745 25kV 12 car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) 745110 working the 1P27 10:00 (10:40 RT) Greater Anglia Norwich- London Liverpool Street service train southbound at Ipswich Station on the Great Eastern Main Line in the County of Suffolk (UK).

The Class 745 EMU's were a direct replacement in early 2020 for the ageing 30 year old plus Class 90 electric locomotives and their slam door British Rail Mk3b coaches which previously worked the Norwich- London Liverpool Street express services.

745110 was built by Stadler Rail at their facility in Bussnang Switzerland as one of the Stadler 'FLIRT' (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) modular family of trainsets.

Note the Dellner type coupling system in the big ugly hole at the front of the trains. The Dellner coupling is a version of the Scharfenberg coupler which connects pneumatics and electronics at the same point of contact.

Greater Anglia had an option to have a cover fitted in these coupling holes by Stadler but declined for cost and ease of maintenance reasons.

The Taigei class submarines are the newest class of conventionally powered Attack submarines of the JMSDF (Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force). With a planned number of 7 (with 4 already in operation), they are the quite possibly the most advanced convenional submarines in the world.

With a crew of 70, a length of 84meters (275ft) and a displacement on the surface of 3000 tons, these subs are equipped with an advanced Air-independent propulsion system (AIP) which gives them considerable range efficiency and noise reduction underwater compared to older submarines.

Class 56s stabled outside Knottingley depot on 31st July 1992. The locos were 56094, 56108, 56086 and 56107.

1992 was the last summer in which a large number of coal trains ran between British deep mines and power stations. In October 1992, the industry minister Michael Heseltine announced the immediate closure of 31 collieries out of the 50 or so which were still open. Despite a big political row, most of the pits closed within 12 months and depots such as Knottingley saw their traffic levels collapse.

BTH Type 1 - Class 15 - D8237, converted to ETH Unit ADB968002, at Toton in the early-80s..

The loco had been withdrawn from service in 1969, and converted, and was then finally scrapped in April 1985.

One member of the class - D8233 - has survived, and is currently being restored, at the East Lancashire Railway.
