Ivar's clam chowder and clam strips. Yummy.

On our way back from wine country on Wednesday the 19th, we drove through the town of Napa and stopped at Oxbow Public Market. It's similar to the Ferry Building in SF. This was part of our lunch at Hog Island Oyster Co.:

Clam Chowder

Really good. It took us a while to get to through enough of the clams, bacon, and carrots on top to actually reach the soup part. It was a little on the salty side, but we had some bread to balance it.

A rather disappointing specimen for $6.95. This was pretty much a watery tomato vegetable soup with large chunks of carrots and celery. If there were clams in this "clam" chowder, they were minced so small that they were barely detectable. What I did find were larger chunks of pork belly. I suppose this isn't vegetarian friendly afterall (thank goodness I'm an omnivore).

Perfect for a 19 degree night in Santa Fe, the green chile clam chowder from La Choza has outstanding flavor and a kick of green chile spice. The chowder is good enough to stand on it's own, but the addition of green chile is a must-experience twist.

Recipe for Clam Chowder

2 teaspoons olive oil

1 cup diced onion

1/2 cup diced celery

2 cups (1/2-inch) cubed peeled Yukon gold or baking potato (about 3/4 pound)

1 cup water

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

1/8 teaspoon black pepper

1 (8-ounce) bottle clam juice

1 bay leaf

1 cup 2% reduced-fat milk

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1 (6 1/2-ounce) can minced clams, undrained

Chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Preparation

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and celery, and sauté 5 minutes or until onion is soft. Stir in potato and next 5 ingredients (potato through bay leaf). Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 12 minutes or until potato is tender.

Combine milk and flour in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk until smooth. Add flour mixture and clams to saucepan, and bring to a simmer. Cook 2 minutes or until mixture begins to thicken, stirring frequently. Discard bay leaf. Ladle soup into bowls; garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

Just to see the clearness of the broth. There is a small piece of clam at the center of the spoon. So, actually, it is not really really “clear” but rather grayish turbid broth. (MY2006-0533)

Ivar's outdoor restaurant has these "Keep Clam" signs around. I think they're there to settle you down when the lines are moving slowly...

I've often wondered - am I a white collar worker - since I am a business owner ??? Or am I a blue collar worker - since my work shirts are blue ??? Neither, I've decided I am a brown collar worker - because my white and blue collars get so darn dirty.

About todays midday feast - Yes, I would love a bit of clam chowder with my crackers ... and I did get out my finest linen for this picture ... and I sweet talked the lady at the corner convenience store out of a real spoon, no spork (spoon-fork combination) for me today.

I've finally worked out my recipe for clam chowder to how I want it. It tastes just how I want it to.

Clear Clam Chowder at George's of Galilee with Beer (MY2006-0471)

Today it is cold and raining in Orlando. When the weather is like this, I crave fish. Broiled, Fried, grilled, baked, or in a soup. I really don't care, but I want fish. Today for lunch I had a bowl of Clam Chowder and I floated some Pepperidge Farm Goldfish crackers in it.

New Years Eve, Ajax and I woke up early (which wasn't too hard, since we finished our beer and were in bed by 10PM :P) and went on a loooooong, loong, long walk around Seattle. Originally, we were going to catch the monorail to Seattle Center, then hoof it up the hill to the lookout and reverse that on the way back, but nothing was open that early, and the monorail wasn't running, so we ended up walking down the seattle sea-wall past the park, then back up the hill, then down to the monorail before catching it back to the downtown center.

I opened up a bank account just to get the Instant Pot that the bank was giving away. This Instant Pot is my new favorite small kitchen appliance. I can make dinner in less than an hour, which is a good thing since I work all day and I'm usually very tired when I get home. If I do all the prep work in the morning, before I leave for work, all I have to do is throw all the stuff in the Instant Pot when I get back, and dinner's done in half-hour or less. This is a photo of the clam chowder I made.

January 21st is National New England Clam Chowder Day!

I was jealous, I'll admit it.

On a recent trip to Boston everywhere I looked was chowda. It was so rich and creamy looking that I couldn't resist veganizing me some. To my joy, the shit came out great with some tvp chunks for clams, and potatoes for extra hardiness.
