Here are some of the parts for a new cigar box guitar I'm working on. These are the main bits, and they stack on one another going from bottom to top with the lid of the box sandwiched between the fretboard and neck.

Namesake & frontman of "Microwave Dave & the Nukes," Dave Gallaher is seen here performing a cadenza in his tune "Tire Man" at the 2013 Cigar Box Guitar Festival, held at the Flying Monkey Arts Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

Dave is a Vietnam veteran of the Air Force, where he served as an intelligence specialist, who afterward became a classically trained guitarist and studied at the renown Berklee College Of Music in Boston with guitar as his principle instrument.

The Cigar Box Guitar Festival is the first and original such festival in the United States, and 2013 marked the 9th annual year the festival has been celebrated, with each year experiencing greater attendance.

cadenza: a solo section which is often improvised, appearing in classical or contemporary work - including jazz, and other popular music - which is used to display the artist's technique, which may also be of considerable length

I made this old wooden cigar box into a wardrobe for my paper dresses. I painted the inside and rubber stamped onto tissue paper and stuck it inside. A small piece of wooden dowling becomes the clothes rail. The outside I painted on a watery coat of cream acrylic. I love the lid (inside and out) so have left it untouched - for the time being anyway.

I went to a antique store one time and bought a bundle of old cards. They turned out to be a collection of anniversary/birthday/christmas/valentines day cards this guy gave to his wife and vice versa. They were cool to read but at the same time I felt sad that they weren't with these people's families. On the other hand, they're nice to look at and I hope one day I have a man that will write me as sweet words as Joe wrote to his wife. =]

The cigar box was given to me by my papa.

I'm not entirely sure what sort of an instrument make out of a cigar box this was. It had four strings, so ukulele is a possibility, but he didn't seem to be playing it like a ukulele. Might just be that he's a better cigar-box ukulele player than I am.

This was at the Atomic Cowboy open mic. I considered getting up and playing this song I've been working on (titled "Azure Spheres", for reasons I'm not going to go into), but I pussied out because everyone else was so much better than I am and I felt intimidated.

25 sigaren, Hfl. 5,75.

A passion for boxes,

I collect and reconstuct boxes. Some are gifts, others I find in charity shops and carboot sales.I put legs under and funny stuff on top. All boxes can be opened and are very good for keeping good thoughts and nice dreams. "WEDDING BOAT BOX" is made from a small cigar-box.

I used this box as a wedding-gift with some cash in it, money is not my favorite gift but the box made it a little more personal.

10 sigaren 1914.

The Instruments of Art: Electro-Acoustic Mandolin

I made this using bits from a busted up scrap mando, driftwood from the recent high tides at Upnor & reclaimed tuning pegs from a couple of electric guitars.

The jubilee clip above the net has a driftwood scrap set into it to prevent any fret buzz by pushing the strings down below the height of the nut.

The sound holes are set with strainers from a recycled tea infuser (hence the mug of tea in a couple of the photo's).

Fitted with a large piezo in the soundboard to a 1/4 inch mono jack via a volume control knob: This little wonder sounds great - especially with a little bit of fuzz through an old Pignose battery amp.

The marker pen graphics of the back of the mando relate to being trapped in a bottle tumbling through the world struggling to break out and be heard.

A couple of the tuning pegs are 'skull' machine heads, coupled with use of the cigar box it points to the aggression of lung cancer.

Cancer research UK site advises that around 42000 people were diagnosed with lung cancer in the uk in 2010, that's around 115 people every day.
