O trilho PR1 VRM – Costa dos Castanheiros, na Serra da Cabreira em Vieira do Minho, revela o esplendor do outono através da folhagem dourada e alaranjada dos castanheiros, espécie emblemática da região. Este percurso pedestre serpenteia por entre bosques mistos, onde os castanheiros centenários, com a sua folhagem caducifólia, criam um contraste visual marcante com o verde persistente das coníferas e o musgo que cobre os troncos. A mudança sazonal da vegetação reflete a adaptação das espécies ao clima atlântico, evidenciando a biodiversidade da serra e o processo natural de senescência foliar, onde a degradação da clorofila revela os pigmentos amarelos e laranjas. O castanheiro, outrora fundamental na alimentação das populações serranas, continua a ser um elemento central da paisagem, testemunhando o equilíbrio entre a natureza e a história na Serra da Cabreira, uma área de elevado valor ecológico e paisagístico.
The PR1 VRM – Costa dos Castanheiros trail, in the Serra da Cabreira in Vieira do Minho, reveals the splendor of autumn through the golden and orange foliage of the chestnut trees, an emblematic species of the region. This walking trail winds through mixed forests, where centuries-old chestnut trees, with their deciduous foliage, create a striking visual contrast with the persistent green of the conifers and the moss that covers the trunks. The seasonal change in vegetation reflects the adaptation of species to the Atlantic climate, highlighting the biodiversity of the mountains and the natural process of leaf senescence, where the degradation of chlorophyll reveals yellow and orange pigments. The chestnut tree, once fundamental to the diet of the mountain populations, remains a central element of the landscape, bearing witness to the balance between nature and history in the Serra da Cabreira, an area of high ecological and landscape value.
Durante uma caminhada em novembro na Serra do Marão, observam-se troncos de árvores cobertos por uma densa camada de musgo verde, fenómeno resultante da elevada humidade atmosférica característica da região, onde o clima de transição entre o litoral húmido e o interior mais seco favorece o crescimento de briófitas. Com altitudes que atingem 1415 metros, a serra abriga uma rica diversidade de flora, incluindo florestas de carvalhos, pinheiros e castanheiros, que sustentam ecossistemas importantes para a fauna local. O substrato rochoso granítico presente nas suas encostas, juntamente com a folhagem amarelada própria da estação, evidencia a transição sazonal que ocorre em novembro. As áreas florestais, compostas por espécies autóctones e coníferas, não somente contribuem para a biodiversidade, mas também desempenham funções essenciais na regulação do ciclo hidrológico. Integrada na Rede Natura 2000, a Serra do Marão é um destino procurado por amantes da natureza e do trekking, permitindo o contacto direto com a relação entre altitude, clima e diversidade biológica.
During a November walk in the Serra do Marão, tree trunks covered by a dense layer of green moss can be seen, a phenomenon resulting from the high atmospheric humidity characteristic of the region, where the transitional climate between the humid coast and the drier interior favors the growth of bryophytes. With altitudes reaching 1415 meters, the mountain range is home to a rich diversity of flora, including oak, pine and chestnut forests, which support important ecosystems for the local fauna. The granite rocky substrate present on its slopes, together with the yellowish foliage typical of the season, highlights the seasonal transition that occurs in November. The forest areas, composed of native species and conifers, not only contribute to biodiversity, but also play an essential role in regulating the hydrological cycle. Part of the Natura 2000 Network, Serra do Marão is a destination sought after by lovers of nature and trekking, allowing direct contact with the relationship between altitude, climate and biological diversity.

Morning sunlight filters through a chestnut forest in Montanchez, Spain, creating a warm and peaceful autumn glow along the forest path.
Around the Old Ruin of Harewood Castle is a wood of Sweet Chestnut, some of them very old and dying and many fallen to the ground. There are still many young ones and the ground was thickly scattered with the prickly chestnut seed pods.

The chestnut tree of over 800 years old.
Often we walked in Groningen's lovely Prinsentuin - adorned by rosebeds and berceaux - under the now felled Chestnut Tree with its 'albino' patch.
Even in Winter many of those beds are edged with pretty blue Cranesbills.
Today I walked alone in chilly Autumn.

A view of red sandstone bluffs and walls in the village of Farndon (Cheshire, in west-central England), looking from a meadow along the bank of the River Dee, on a partly sunny afternoon in mid-May 2022.
This spot is near Farndon Bridge and a picnic site within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (Dee Cliffs, Farndon, SSSI). The trees are in full leaf, a chestnut tree is blooming, and, in the meadow, wildflowers – and nettles – flourish.
The bridge crosses the Dee and the Welsh border to the village of Holt (Wrexham County Borough, in northeastern Wales) and is thus also called Holt Bridge (in Welsh, Pont Holt). In this northern part of the Welsh Marches, the border between England and Wales changed a number of times, so Farndon was sometimes in Wales; it retains the alternative Welsh name Rhedynfre.
Currently, Farndon is jurisdictionally within the unitary authority Cheshire West and Chester.

Pont Neuf (Pont = "bridge"), built from 1578 to 1607, is the oldest standing bridge crossing the Seine River. It has two arched spans, one span with seven arches connecting the Ile de la Cite with the right bank of the river, and this five arch span connecting the island to Rive Gauche ("the Left Bank"). Our hotel was in this general area on the Left Bank. Large chestnut trees were in bloom along the river, and throughout Paris.
The weather did not make for the best photography on this ten day trip as it either rained every day or was extremely hazy. However, each of these conditions provided a unique moodiness.
