The remains of this 'standing cross', probably dating from the 13th century, sits on the Green of the small Oxfordshire village of Woodeaton. Behind it can be seen the parish church of Holy Rood, itself of early 11th century origins.
Delightful though it is to see life again in trees and fields, it is - as can be seen here - still only that first growth of fresh, lurid green (and too much of it). Also, grass when cut now turns a rather sickly yellow. In another month we should see a more mature appearance in the English countryside.

The last leaves on a chestnut tree at Monrepos. While I stood there and took my photo the leaves were literally raining down on me. The building in the background was originally part of a country estate on the grounds of Monrepos. Nowadays it belongs to a hotel.
This is another photo taken at the park last weekend. They have a lot of Chestnut trees there and I was happy that they reopened just in time to allow me to see them in full bloom.
