Aesculus hippocastanum is a large deciduous tree, commonly known as Horse-chestnut or Conker tree. It is native to a small area in the mountains of the Balkans in southeast Europe, in small areas in northern Greece, Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, and Bulgaria. Now it is widely cultivated throughout the temperate world.

Despite its common name, the Horse-chestnut is not related to the Chestnuts (Castanea), which are members of the Beech faimily (Fagaceae). The Horse-chestnut is in the Buckeye family (Hippocastanaceae) and is in the same genus as other buckeyes, Aesculus. The Horse-chestnut has its common name due to the husks of the conkers being spiny and the conkers themselves shiny brown like the Chestnuts. It is also claimed that the name is derived from the horse-shoe mark left on the twig after the leaf drops in Autumn.

The nuts, especially those that are young and fresh, are slightly poisonous, containing alkaloid saponins and glucosides. Although not dangerous to touch, they cause sickness when eaten. Some mammals, notably deer, are able to break down the toxins and eat them safely. They are reputed to be good for horses with wind, but this is unproven and feeding them to horses is not advisable. The saponin aescin, however, has been used for health purposes (such as varicose veins, edema, sprains) and is available in food supplements, as is a related glucoside aesculin.

In Bavaria (where I come from) the chestnut is the typical tree for a beer garden. Originally they were planted for their deep shade which meant that beer cellar owners could cut ice from local rivers and lakes in winter to cool their beer well into summer. Nowadays guests enjoy the shade to keep their heads cool - even after the second Maß (a mug with a liter of beer).

See here the bloom in more details.

Naturheilkunde

[ENG] The Chestnut forest of El Tiemblo (Ávila, Spain) it is a small forest of municipal property placed to approximately 1.100 m. of altitude in the header of the Reservation of Iruelas's Valley, to approximately 100 km from Madrid. It is the most extensive chestnut forest of the Central System, and on the autumnal station -the most showy and colouring- its paths are crossed by numerous visitors. Along the route we will be able to observe different species of trees and shrubs that they accompany on the chestnut-tree or form a part of the undergrowth of the chestnut forest (white hawthorn, hazel, elm of mountain, cherry, willows, holly, alder-tree, birch, heathers, ferns...). A section of the path passes parallel to the creek of the throat of the Yedra (Ivy), with it waters down all the year round and with a row of alder-trees that forming a small forest of gallery they wind close to the creek. With luck we can contemplate some species of birds of forest character (mocking-bird, blue climber, blackbird, thrush...).

Today, I was lucky enough to be one of the charity representatives at a presentation to the Chestnut Tree House Hopsice in West Sussex.

Presenting the cheque are Pete Constanti Group Executive from Thomas Cook and Linda Lusardi whom is one of our patrons.

We then got taken on a tour of the facilities and it was great to see what the £24,832.00 we raised went towards.

The guys that work here deserve nothing but praise, working hard to ensure that all of the children have as comfortable time as possible.

Chestnut trees lined the streets of Stuttgart. I loved the green spiky balls like little green Christmas ornaments dangling from every leafy branch of the Chestnut trees.

Stuttgart was founded in the 10th century; its name is a modern version of the original Stutengarten ("mare's garden").

they are not all extinct.........this one has been in my Dads front yard for a LONG time. The one in the back yard died several years ago, though.

Zoom view of chestnuts on the chestnut tree across the road from our house this morning. A few of the chestnuts never dropped (even though eventually their contents did) and now they collect snow, making the tree look as if it has brown and white balls stuck on it.

This was growing on the side of a chestnut tree on a stump where a large branch had been sawn off around 6 or 7 feet from the ground. It seemed quite out of place with all that vibrant colour at this time of year when everything around it was dull in comparison. A real work of art by mother nature in my book though.

Non so a voi, ma l'autunno, quando regala immagini così, mi riscalda l'anima.

Last night's forecast for today's

weather called for cloudy weather until at least 6:00 PM. It's been raining most of the afternoon. While I don't mind the rain, having some forewarning would have been nice. At least I took care of my chores downtown in the morning (on foot) when it wasn't wet...

Unripe chestnut pods on the chestnut tree near the front of our house in Kitahiroshima. The typhoon that came through yesterday wasn't very strong by the time it got here (the eye passed over us, and we got a lot of wind later, but no where near as much as on the 5th of September). So, the tree is still full of chestnut pods. I suspect the tree belongs to the same person who owns the wonderful vegetable garden across our road - it's going to be a popular tree in a few more weeks.
