Seen May 11, 2005 on the NW edge of Garret Mt. This little guy got himself hung up on some catkins in this tree for a few minutes disturbing a few local birders who saw it. After 3 minutes of dangling by a foot he freed himself and began singing again!

One of the two main purposes of our walk today was to find chestnuts - and we could have taken home hundreds, but stopped at 4 completely full pockets. That will be enough to roast some for snacking and make a batch of chestnut soup. There are plenty more nuts on the tree for next week, and on the ground for the squirrels.

Saw several juveniles of this species today also, and was not sure what bird they were until I witnessed a feeding frenzy in a shady tree. There was little possibility of a tight focus on that scene but it was a very cool thing to watch, so I am sharing that action below....

American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was eliminated from most of its native range when the chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) was introduced to North American in the early 1900s. Scientists at the US Forest Service and Purdue University are working on crossing the American chestnut with the Chinese chestnut (Castanea dentata) to produce a blight-resistant tree. Here we see a hybrid tree that was inoculated with the fungus and is beginning to show symptoms. Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center, Purdue University, Indiana, US. www.htirc.org
