We just got home from a great visit to Trinidad with lots of beautiful birds. This White-chested Emerald was one of many birds that were hanging around outside of our room at the Asa Wright Nature Center.

This striking parrot is a nomadic species that can be found across the drier southern parts of the Australian continent, mainly in central South Australia and inland southern Western Australia. Like many species of parrot, they are sexually dimorphic—the photo shows a male. The female lacks a scarlet chest, and the other colours are less vibrant. Despite its colourful plumage, it can be difficult to see as it quietly feeds on the seeds of tall native grasses.

My grandparents brought this chest back from Singapore in the 60s, and I always loved the smell when my nanna opened it to put her bedding away. When she passed it came to live with us and is still much used and loved. Whenever I open it and smell the Camphorwood I think of my nanna.
