Ginny had an echocardiogram and a checkup with the doctor today. All is well. But it made me think about how much I associate this time of year with health concerns. There are flu shots to get and appointments to schedule while insurance will still pay for it. Winter is hard on the elderly. Being a caregiver feels like being on a boat out in the ocean during a storm. We try to protect our fragile cargo while we move them from the coast of autumn to the shores of spring. We bundle them up and worry about every sniffle and cough. In the hallways at her facility, staff and family members speak in quiet tones about what bug is going around, who's fallen ill and which ones we've lost. We lose a few every winter, and that always hurts.
As you can see, Jack is still crooked. He had a 2 week checkup today and is showing some signs of improvement. The vet said that nerve damage takes a long time to heal. She also told me that Jack may have permanent nerve damage so the left side of his face may be permanently paralyzed and he may always have the the head tilt.
He isn't in any pain and is almost his old self. He is apprehensive to jump up on us and hasn't shown any interest in wanting to play in the snow or play with his sister. I am hoping his urge to play will come back in the coming weeks.
The vet is keeping him on the high dose of steroids and we have another checkup in 4 weeks. At that time, he will have been on the steroids for 7 weeks and may actually win the fights that he picks with bigger dogs at the vet's office. (Today he picked a fight with a doberman mix named Snickers. Yeah, Jack's sweet, but he's a punk when it comes to interactions with other dogs.)
Thank you all for your love and support. We have no problem living with a crooked dog who is a VERY messy drinker! I'd rather have a crooked Jack than no Jack!!

My bi-yearly checkup with my GP. I was alone in the exam room when I took this, even though it looks like I'm looking at someone. I was looking at the cabinets that have the supplies in them (and are clearly labeled with "gauze", "extra gloves", and various other odds and ends for exam rooms).
The good news- I AM down a lot of weight from this summer. I no longer have to take one of the many pills I take in the morning to stay alive because I no longer need it (it was for cholesterol or triglycerides or something else heart-related).
The lab tech got blood from me in one try, which is unusual for my slippery, rolling veins that collapse under duress.
Before most Goddard spacecraft components are cleared for launch, they go through final checkups in one of many of the center's clean room facilities. The largest, the High Bay Clean Room, can accommodate two space shuttle payloads at one time.
The High Bay Clean Room, often called the world's largest, prevents dirt, dust and other contaminants from damaging spacecraft components, especially sensitive and carefully calibrated instruments. For example, unlike personal digital cameras, a smudge or speck of dust on the lens of a space telescope is extremely difficult -- if not impossible -- to clean, especially once the spacecraft reaches orbit a few hundred miles up.
A robust ventilation system and an entire wall of air filters help protect against these contaminants. The clean room ventilation system circulates almost one million cubic feet of air every minute through 9,000 square feet of HEPA filters located along one wall. The filters are not your typical off-the-shelf HEPA variety from the local home improvement store. These are specially designed to last several decades.

Cupcake went back for a checkup with the ophthamologist today, and she had great news!
His corneal ulcer is 95% healed, and it was all due to him not producing enough tears. So she gave us 2 more bottles of eyedrops to give him, and this should do the trick!
We celebrated by stopping by the groomers, picked up this adorable pet carrier, which was some serious $$$, but anything for Cupcake, right?, and some other goodies :)
He's a happy little man :)

After a turbulent checkup regarding the blood pressures and proteins of Toni, the babies, as always, are fine. Both currently weighing in at over 6 pound each! After a couple of nights in hospital for observation, all are well and we have been given a date for a cesarean on the 27th November. 15th November, 2006.
Bonnie had her 3 month checkup today with her internist and received another glowing report. Her platelets were 339,000 and her internist was very pleased with her physical condition

3 day checkup... He didn't poop yet so she actually looked and made sure he had a butthole! hehe... She called the head mid-wife to discover that he had pooped while he was being delivered so all was well.

This is just one of the climate actions we are taking this year, to make a green change in our lives: switching to 100% renewable electricity, getting an electric vehicle, biking more often, canceling long flights, converting gas appliances to electric and eating a plant-rich diet.
In just six months, we have reduced our carbon footprint by half, and we hope to reach zero emissions by the end of next year. This is just one of the ways we are trying to help solve the climate crisis. Besides taking action in our own lives, I have also started Green Change, our new climate action network in Marin, to help others go green with us.
