From 4 to 9 every morning, different types of fish caught from the Bay of Bengal and other sources -- are brought to the port city's Karnaphuli ghat from wholesale depots. The business is the busiest during night times, taking the numbers to millions.

At the break of dawn, hundreds of massive trawlers and fishing ships emerge from the seas and rivers at the shores carrying their catches for the day. Each large trawler can carry about a tone of fish. About 220 bazars and six warehouses are set to sell their fish every day.

On the side of the bank of Karnaphuli river, this colossal ghat upholds the biggest fish market for marine and native fish in the port area known as the Chattogram Fishery Ghat. Almost every district of the country imports fish of different categories from here on wholesale and starts their trading amongst the locals.

Founded by the Portuguese almost 200 years ago, this fishing ghat is now thriving in the heart of this city. Located in Lusai Kanya, at the mouth of the Rajkhali and on the bank of the Karnaphuli, it has been made its official location recently from the former location on Iqbal road in Patharghata.

Hilsa makes a festive entrance to the markets of the ghat during its peak season. The ghat also sees the busiest trade at this time of the year. Fish weighing even up to 200 kilos are brought to the market and sold either in whole or in pieces.

A place towards the sea, a lot of vessels can be seen from here.

This is the real beauty of nature. The hilly river is heart of all business & trade. But the river is polluted by the human. River's animal life is seriously affected.

Chittagong, officially called Chattogram, city that is the chief Indian Ocean port of Bangladesh. It lies about 12 miles (19 km) north of the mouth of the Karnaphuli River, in the southeastern arm of the country. Chittagong is the second largest city in Bangladesh, after Dhaka.

History

Chittagong’s fine natural harbour was known to the Mediterranean world from the early Common Era and to Arab sailors by the 10th century. It was called Porto Grande by Portuguese and Venetian voyagers and was described by João de Barros in 1552 as “the most famous and wealthy city of the Kingdom of Bengal.” It has been generally identified with the city of Bengala described by early Portuguese and other writers. Conquered by the Muslims in the 14th century, Chittagong passed to the Arakanese in the next century. The piratical raids of the Arakanese and their Portuguese mercenaries led to the dispatch of a strong force by Shaista Khan, the Mughal governor (nawab) of Bengal, who in 1666 occupied the region. Chittagong was ceded to the British East India Company in 1760.

Chittagong was constituted a municipality in 1864 and grew in different directions along the main routes of transportation. Although the headquarters of the Bangladesh Railway are in Chittagong and the railway workshop is in the nearby town of Pahartali, the port remained the centre of city life and trade. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, much trade was diverted to Chittagong from Calcutta (now Kolkata, India), and the port was improved considerably. With well-equipped facilities and numerous permanent jetties and moorings, the port became the gateway of Bangladesh for foreign trade.

Kalurghat Bridge is the first bridge in Karnaphuli River. Kalurghat Bridge an old bridge, once the only link between the southern region of chittagong division on the bank of the river karnafuli with the rest of the country. This 239m long bridge was installed as a simple rail bridge of steel structure between Janalihut and Gomdandi railway stations in 1930. The bridge was commissioned for operation of trains in Chittagong-Dohazari section in the year 1931. Thirty-one years after its inauguration, considering the suffering of the people it was modified with decking and carpeting and turned into a rail and road-bridge in 1962.

Gumai Beel is one of the largest paddy fields in Bangladesh which is located at Rangunia upazila in Chittagong. This beel produces Amon and Boro mainly. But recently, the adjacent land to the main road of this beel has been filling up with various types of constructions.

Jabbarer Boli Khela (জব্বারের বলী খেলা) is a century-old traditional wrestling competition held every year in Chattogram (Chittagong), Bangladesh. It was started in 1909 by a local businessman and social worker named Abdul Jabbar Sowdagar.

At that time, the British colonial rule was dominant, and Abdul Jabbar wanted to encourage physical fitness and unity among the youth of Chattogram to resist colonial oppression. Inspired by the spirit of self-reliance and empowerment, he introduced this wrestling competition.

The first Boli Khela was organized at Laldighi Maidan (the famous red pond field) during the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh) festivities. Over time, it became a major cultural event, blending sports, tradition, and a vibrant Boishakhi Mela (fair) — turning the whole area into a grand celebration of Chattogram’s spirit.

The word "Boli" (বলী) means "wrestler" and "Khela" (খেলা) means "game" or "sport." Thus, Boli Khela literally translates to "Wrestlers' Game."

Today, Jabbarer Boli Khela is not just about physical strength — it's a living symbol of Chattogram’s pride, bravery, and enduring cultural heritage. Wrestlers (Bolira) from all over the region come to compete, and thousands of spectators gather to cheer, celebrate, and relive the history.

The Karnaphuli River, one of the major rivers in Bangladesh, flows through the southeastern part of the country, including the city of Chattogram (Chittagong). It is not only significant for its role in transportation and commerce but also admired for its scenic beauty. The river is flanked by green hills, creating a picturesque backdrop.

The alleys surrounding the puja mondop were all crowded and chaotic, and I was looking for a solid wall to photograph people.

This blue wall did remind me of Jaipur, and did look quite well with the red attires.
