42/52 Feeling small

Only 10 weeks left, I can't believe it :))!!

blog | twitter | instagram | not-a-selfie.tumblr.com

I just wanted to clear my head… and somehow ended up in full-on poppy love 🌺🌞

“In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavad gita, since whose composition years of the gods have elapsed, and in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial; and I doubt if that philosophy is not to be referred to a previous state of existence, so remote is its sublimity from our conceptions.

I lay down the book and go to my well for water, and lo! there I meet the servant of the Bramin, priest of Brahma and Vishnu and Indra, who still sits in his temple on the Ganges reading the Vedas, or dwells at the root of a tree with his crust and water jug. I meet his servant come to draw water for his master, and our buckets as it were grate together in the same well. The pure Walden water is mingled with the sacred water of the Ganges.”

― Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

Mono Lake on Christmas Day

Christmas Day arrived.

It would have been quite a bit of an understatement if I said it was cold… No, seriously. It was pitch black dark when I woke up, and at 21°F (-6°C) I was getting ready for the morning photo shoot.

You gotta do what you gotta do, like they say, right? I grabbed my gear and headed for the lake.

It was quite overcast, so I knew that the sky would not light up. Well, not only did it turn out to be the case but also it wasn’t getting any warmer for a while. I was busy keeping my hands warm between the shots. Oh well, what can you do? That’s how Mother Nature wanted it that morning.

It was not too windy, but it did not mean that the water calm. So, I ended up shooting quite a few per composition till I saw the decent reflections of the Tufa towers.

But then again, I was also enjoying the early morning of solitude (yes, not a single soul was at the lake that early) quite a bit. It was one of the reasons why I drove all the way out there.

"Be present. Make love. Make tea. Avoid small talk. Embrace conversation. Buy a plant, water it. Make your bed. Make someone else’s bed. Have a smart mouth, and quick wit. Run. Make art. Create. Swim in the ocean. Swim in the rain. Take chances. Ask questions. Make mistakes. Learn. Know your worth. Love fiercely. Forgive quickly. Let go of what doesn’t make you happy. Grow."

— Paulo Coelho

Kind of mystical, these Ravens and this one was insistent that I take his image. But evidently, not his soul - he retains a bit of his mystery.

Went out for a sunrise autumn shot this morning, but the sun did not make an appearance. So I pulled out this shot from our recent road trip. On this occasion, the sun did make an appearance as I strolled along the shoreline on the edge of the sand dune. A couple walking a dog passed me along the narrow beach ... and how fortunate to see one lone tree perched on the dune when I turned around to capture this shot!

Happy Sliders Sunday Everyone!!

My love affair with the Imperial Beach Fishing Pier continues. I had an early morning opportunity to shoot a few long exposures of the pier. The sunrise clouds were beautiful as they scudded across the sky. The long exposure really gives me that feeling of motion in this image.

Thanks so much to EVERYONE for your wonderful comments and image dedications on my birthday. I am so happy that I wasn't forgotten after my long absence!! Flickr Peeps are the BEST!!

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

I don't do a lot of HDR. I take them, play around with them ... but for the most part, I'm never happy with them. In the past, I've used Photomatix and then the new updated HDR feature in Photoshop CS5. Still not satisfied. Nik Software recently released HDR Efex Pro and I downloaded a trial to test it out. I have to say that I am blown away by this program. I re-ran some older images through it and I am really pleased with the results. The bad thing is, CS5 CRASHES and it runs incredibly SLOW (my five year old computer just isn't up to snuff with the new programs). The good news is, you can run it from Lightroom too ... though slow; it doesn't crash!!

I took this at the Chula Vista Marina. The sunrise was incredibly EPIC and my single shots just weren't capturing what I was seeing so I set up several HDR shots. This image is from three exposures. I LOVE the detail in the water; the color & the ripples. The program did a FANTASTIC job with the ghosting. There are ducks in the water so the ripples were different in all three images. The color on the horizon is spot on. The clouds are more epic here than they really were but I kind of like it like this!! And this really does look good in the lightbox!!

A reflection paints a hundred words and tells a story of a boat. Rich blue ripples frame wavering masts and the hull of the boat. The crop suggest an immpossible perspective until my brain re-orders its thinking. Even at dock, a sense of motion permeates. Quiet energy keeps company as it awaits the next adventure.

English Garden at the dusk.

Before I left for my Yosemite trip, I captured a sunrise over Lake Michigan. The sun wavered in and out of a dense layer of clouds on the horizon. I really loved this fabulous, dilapidated beach fence, silhouetted against the sky.

I'm still going through the 'one or two fence shots' I managed to capture on my California trip and can't decide which one to post ... so I'm pulling this one from the archives. Caught a bit of a cold at the tail end of my trip so I'll be rummaging through the fence group later this afternoon ... from the comfort of my couch.

Happy Fence Friday and hope everyone has an awesome weekend!!

"The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.

The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color." — Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

She is a gerenuk, "a long-necked species of antelope found in dry thorn bush scrub and desert in East Africa. The word gerenuk (pronounced with a hard g) comes from the Somali language, meaning "giraffe-necked."

Love their long thin necks!! I was happy to find a bit of autumn at the safari park. I've been looking for it!!
