As I was out chasing redtailed hawks on Saturday, I had to take some more shots of the winter hills with the round bales of hay. Tomorrow morning I'll upload the same hillsides covered in Sunday's snowfall.

There are so many websites and self-help books for people who are chasing happiness. I can understand this because oftentimes when I have chased material acquisitions it has never actually made me happy. I am someone who immediately gets buyers remorse after making a large purchase and feel that monkey on my back and resent the stress it creates.

My daily happiness comes from feeling alive, free and connected. I get up early, start with exercise, 10 min of mindfulness, coffee or tea, nourishing food, creativity (photography or writing), and connect with family/friends even just a quick text. This routine sets the stage for my day and I find I notice more of the little things each day that bring joy to my life.

Was out last night chasing the aurora borealis. The aurora forecast scale was at a 9 and the field of coverage stretched from north of us to as far south as Seattle, Toronto, and all of the maritime provinces.

So I was expecting big things, like the whole sky being filled. At 10:30 the glow started to appear on the horizon and teased from time to time with some minor flares. By 12:30 am I went home in frustration, with this image the best I could get.

I'm sure that at 2:30 or so they would have been awesome when I was fast asleep. Alas, such is the fate of aurora photographers, it seems.

The sheer size and scope of this old Victorian mansion makes it difficult to get a handle on photographically. I've been here before and it's literally overwhelming to be in the presence of this house. So many architectural details compete for the eye's attention, coupled with the sheer enormity of the place. Intuition brought me back here yesterday, on a bleak and raw day. My senses were sharpened by the cold. I focused on an old wrought iron sign bracket in the side yard, and allowed the house to recede a bit into the background. I crouched low to enhance the sense of the house looming and brooding. The overall atmosphere could not have been better.

On the way home from the city yesterday, I was lucky to see this male Northern Harrier. They move very rapidly, close to the grasses, looking for mice. Most of the time they lift up and fly into another field as soon as I stop the car, but this one was really into the hunt. Usually my images of harriers are out of focus due to the grasses interfering with the focus.

Me and my friend Johan Aurvind went out to chase auroras one night and had quite some success at it. :)

This might have been the last time this season to watch this phenomenon since the sun is setting much later now. In the winter we have very few sun hours. In the spring and summer we have very few dark hours.

Thank you for visiting!

This one is a bit of distance and crop, but the chase is great to see and does not look too bad viewed large. The eagle with the fish was being quite vocal.

Days are getting shorter, during long summer days this scene would be observed when №603 is arriving near Senneterre around 21:00.

Nonetheless, chasing sunsets is one of my favourite things about working the former NTR mainline going west. The time is 17:49 and the sun is reflecting on the classic stainless steel HEP cars as we're completing our flag stop at Oskélanéo River.

Philip Vermeulen. Chasing The Dot

The very first museum solo exhibition of the emerging artist Philip Vermeulen can be seen at Rijksmuseum Twenthe until 5 January 2025.

Hypersculptures

In his works, Vermeulen explores the foundations of human perception through movement, light, vibrations and sound. What does light do to our brains, how do we register movement, what does sound feel like, and do we actually see what we think we see? Vermeulen's space-filling installations, which he himself calls 'hypersculptures', seem to transform before the eyes of the viewer, creating a unique and enchanting experience.

Patchouli is a real chaser.

Visited a very quite Moraine Lake ("above" Lake Louise). the parking lot at L. Louise was full again so we decided to try our luck at Moraine. No problems parking there. You should have seen it last year, people lining up at the road entrance at 5:00AM to get up to the lake. Like it a bit better this way. ;( though mixed feelings about the reasons !! see date if you remember those times.

Are we? Sometimes I think we are. 🤔.

I went to my favorite dragonfly-chasing place yesterday. I found many, but most of them were really shy, watching me from a distance. It took me over an hour to find one that allowed me as close as I wanted, but it was worth it ! :o)

Can anybody help me identify this one? I'm guessing "Gomphidae", but I have a lot to learn...
