In 1986 while working on my MA I wrote the following:
(the class assignment was to give a speech about an educator who greatly influenced me)
I chose to speak about someone I admired and respected long before I met. This someone, in my opinion, is definitely an educator though he is not in the school system or in the field of education. He has educated people to believe in themselves --- to believe that they are human beings, with basic rights regardless of the color of their skin, accent, or what they do for a living. He has helped them realize the importance of self-pride, self-worth, self-dignity, self-respect. He has also educated the public to the plight of others, namely of farmworkers, and of their struggle for respect and dignity. I am speaking about César Chávez, the president of the United Farm Workers.
It’s 1965. I’m a sophomore in high school. I turn on the TV. There he is: about 5’6”, dark skin, thick black hair, friendly brown eyes, beautiful warm smile, very good looking, quiet spoken, yet dynamic, straight forward, energetic, and persuasive. I feel his warmth, his sincerity, his intelligence, his conviction. He’s captured me. He has "personal magnetism plus".
I don’t eat grapes. I urge my mom not to buy grapes. I urge my friends not to buy grapes. I read everything I can about the farmworker struggle. I read everything I can about César Chávez. I learn that in 1962 President Kennedy offered him a fantastic paying job to be the Peace Corps director over a South American region. He turned it down. He said he couldn’t stop what he had started. He had already started organizing farmworkers. Imagine how easy it would have been to accept that job --- $21,000 a year in 1962 was a lot of money. He already had eight children and times were rough.
It’s 1966. He marches from Delano to Sacramento.
It’s 1968. He fasts for twenty-five days --- his personal answer to violence in the fields. In response to a farmworker who said, “Courage is fighting back,” César said, “Courage is also a willingness to sacrifice. It’s proving to the world how much you are willing to give up personally, in order to win your goal.
It’s 1972. I’m living in Bakersfield. I’m involved with the United Farm Workers. I finally meet the man I’ve admired for the past seven years. I feel as though I’ve known him all my life. He listens with sincere interest. He has a sense of humor, a great wit. He’s devoid of feelings of superiority. He’s tactful and considerate when giving orders. He’s cool and calm under pressure. He makes me feel like I’m important. He’s warmhearted, sympathetic, generous, perceptive, patient.
I definitely have learned a great deal from him. For me César Chávez is a very important educator.

Las Vegas, often known simply as Vegas, is the 26th-most populous city in the United States, the most populous city in the state of Nevada, and the county seat of Clark County. The city anchors the Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area and is the largest city within the greater Mojave Desert. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. The Las Vegas Valley as a whole serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada.
The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its mega casino-hotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of "Sin City", and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.
Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, it was the most populated North American city founded within that century (a similar distinction was earned by Chicago in the 19th century). Population growth has accelerated since the 1960s, and between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled, increasing by 85.2%. Rapid growth has continued into the 21st century, and according to the United States Census Bureau, the city had 641,903 residents in 2020, with a metropolitan population of 2,227,053.
As with most major metropolitan areas, the name of the primary city ("Las Vegas" in this case) is often used to describe areas beyond official city limits. In the case of Las Vegas, this especially applies to the areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip, which are actually located within the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester.

The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South in Clark County, Nevada, that is known for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip, as it is known, is about 4.2 mi (6.8 km) long, and is immediately south of the Las Vegas city limits in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester, but is often referred to simply as "Las Vegas".
Many of the largest hotel, casino, and resort properties in the world are on the Strip, known for its contemporary architecture, lights, and wide variety of attractions. Its hotels, casinos, restaurants, residential high-rises, entertainment offerings, and skyline have established the Strip as one of the most popular and iconic tourist destinations in the world and is one of the driving forces for Las Vegas' economy. Most of the Strip has been designated as an All-American Road, and the North and South Las Vegas Strip routes are classified as Nevada Scenic Byways and National Scenic Byways.
Cornelis Johannes (roepnaam Cor, later zelf veranderd in Cesar) Zuiderwijk (Den Haag, 18 juli 1948) is een Nederlandse drummer. Sinds 1970 is hij lid van de Haagse rockband Golden Earring.
Since my mother and mother in-law are oceans apart from us our day was relatively relaxing. There was a small amount of cloud action that evening so I decided to go out and shoot after dinner. It was another unplanned venture hoping I could possibly come away with something. I recently saw a sweet shot of downtown from the top of Sacramento’s version of a high rise so I went strolling around that area to scout out. I didn’t really expect to shoot anything from up high so it was no pressure. When I found the building he shot from I realized it was definitely private access to the top and there was no way I could get up there without permission. I even got questioned by security, but totally distracted him when I told him I saw someone puke all over the bathroom floor. When I left I went up a parking lot next door which was way too low. I walked the perimeter of the Sheraton, but decided not to go in since I had no clue if they would kick me out or not and I’d rather walk in more incognito (business casual with my tripod not visible) on a weeknight anyway due to busier streets and more lights turned on in the buildings. Heck it would probably be even better closer to late fall/winter as the sun goes down earlier.
As the sun started to drop more I knew I had to leave the area or waste an hour of photography time. As I got back to my car I almost considered the Tower Bridge again since it was close by, but I as I drove off I pulled over when I saw the parking structure on 10th and I Street. When I got to the top I knew it was still way too low, but decided to try and make something out of it. Nothing spectacular here, but at least there was some nice sunset light. My only regret is not attempting a pano shot as I think there could have been some potential if I captured a wider view of this area. This is why I want an L plate and eventually a pano rail. Oh well I doubt I’ll ever come back to this spot, but if anyone in the Sac area want to go rooftop hunting I’m all game. I’m even thinking about asking for access to some places if possible.
3 shots manually blended in CS5 with some minor touches. For this shot I tried to keep it as realistic as possible so I didn’t want to bring out the exposure of the foreground too much, but I’m thinking it might be too dark now? Meh.
