Las Vegas, often known simply as Vegas, is the 26th-most populous city in the United States, the most populous city in the state of Nevada, and the county seat of Clark County. The city anchors the Las Vegas Valley metropolitan area and is the largest city within the greater Mojave Desert. Las Vegas is an internationally renowned major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. The Las Vegas Valley as a whole serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada.

The city bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its mega casino-hotels and associated activities. It is a top three destination in the United States for business conventions and a global leader in the hospitality industry, claiming more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. Today, Las Vegas annually ranks as one of the world's most visited tourist destinations. The city's tolerance for numerous forms of adult entertainment earned it the title of "Sin City", and has made Las Vegas a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.

Las Vegas was settled in 1905 and officially incorporated in 1911. At the close of the 20th century, it was the most populated North American city founded within that century (a similar distinction was earned by Chicago in the 19th century). Population growth has accelerated since the 1960s, and between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled, increasing by 85.2%. Rapid growth has continued into the 21st century, and according to the United States Census Bureau, the city had 641,903 residents in 2020, with a metropolitan population of 2,227,053.

As with most major metropolitan areas, the name of the primary city ("Las Vegas" in this case) is often used to describe areas beyond official city limits. In the case of Las Vegas, this especially applies to the areas on and near the Las Vegas Strip, which are actually located within the unincorporated communities of Paradise and Winchester.

The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South in Clark County, Nevada, that is known for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip, as it is known, is about 4.2 mi (6.8 km) long, and is immediately south of the Las Vegas city limits in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester, but is often referred to simply as "Las Vegas".

Many of the largest hotel, casino, and resort properties in the world are on the Strip, known for its contemporary architecture, lights, and wide variety of attractions. Its hotels, casinos, restaurants, residential high-rises, entertainment offerings, and skyline have established the Strip as one of the most popular and iconic tourist destinations in the world and is one of the driving forces for Las Vegas' economy. Most of the Strip has been designated as an All-American Road, and the North and South Las Vegas Strip routes are classified as Nevada Scenic Byways and National Scenic Byways.

Cesar Chavez was a famed Latino Labor and Civil Rights Activist who with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, now the United Farm Workers union. He was known for his aggressive but nonviolent tactics, rallying public support to the side of the workers and is now a folk hero to various Latino movements in the United States.

Born in 1927 to a poor Mexican-American family in Arizona who lost most of their assets during the Great Depression and ended up becoming migrant workers in California, Chavez dropped out of school in 1942 to help his family make ends meet, working as a migrant worker (besides a brief stint in the Navy) until 1952. Father Donald McDonnell brought him into the Community Service Organization (CSO), a Latino civil rights group, and for six years Chavez worked on bringing Mexican-Americans to register and vote, eventually becoming CSO's national director. In 1962 Chavez left the CSO and with Dolores Huerta founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA).

On September 8, 1965, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC), mostly made up of Filipino farm workers in Delano, California, walked off the grape vineyards of the area, demanding wages equivalent to the Federal minimum wage. Historically farm owners had pitted the Filipino and Latino workers against each other to suppress wages and strikes. This time however things changed. On September 16, Chavez held a meeting of the NFWA to decide whether to follow suit. Personally agreeing with move to strike, Chavez roused the crowd of 1200 into chants of Huelga (Strike)! and successfully pushed the NFWA into participating in the Delano Grape Strike. On March 17, 1966 Cesar Chavez led 75 activists on a public 550km march to Sacramento to present their demands. Sending activists to follow the grape shipments to the ports, they found and managed to persuade the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union from picking and shipping non-union grapes, leading them to rot on the docks. Other activists led consumer boycotts of grapes, telling consumers shopping at supermarkets why the workers were striking and asking them to refrain from purchasing grapes. Grape shipment distribution centers were blockaded. New unions were formed as far away as Texas and Ohio. Chavez brought publicity to the strike by publicly fasting for nonviolence and "thanksgiving and hope". Also noteworthy is that the UFW pushed to end the Bracero Program importing Mexican guest workers and prevent Mexican immigrants from entering the United States. Despite physical violence and intimidation by the farmers, the unions slowly gained ground, and in 1967 the NFWA and AWOC merged to form the United Farm Workers (UFW). One by one the corporations gave in. By 1970 most of the farms had raised wages and/or allowed laborers to form unions.

Also in 1970 the Teamsters Union began moving in to try to take over the fledgling farm unions. Chavez responded with the Salad Bowl Strike on August 23, 1970, the largest farm worker strike in US history. After sometimes violent confrontations between the unions, and Chavez's arrest in Salinas, the Teamsters backed off but the UFW came out battered. Losing steam, in 1975 Chavez led UFW leaders to embark upon a public march against an old corporate holdout, E & J Gallo Winery, by marching 180km from San Francisco to Modesto. Starting with only a few hundred marchers, Chavez ended in Modesto with 15000. This prompted Gov Jerry Brown to push through the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act (ALRA), establishing collective bargaining for farmworkers, followed by the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) to oversee the process.

This was the height of UFW success. By the late 1970s, the UFW was marred by political infighting, many led by Chavez himself who labeled opponents as communists or Republicans and endorsed the dictatorial regime of Philippines Ferdinand Marcos. In 1988, Cesar Chavez attempted one more strike, protesting the use of pesticides on the health of farm workers. Despite much publicity, the boycott failed, and Chavez died soon afterwards, possibly related to health troubles from fasting.

Perhaps the most public Latino activist, Cesar Chavez has been greatly commemorated, including Cesar Chavez Day

in California, Colorado and Texas, and the establishment of Cesar Chavez National Monument in 2012.

No sabia cuánto tiempo llevaba alli. Tampoco importaba.

Deseó no haberlo hecho. Deseó que todo fuera un sueño. Deseó no estar ahí...

Me casaré contigo

I've read a lot of leadership books and few of them inspired me as much as reading this first book by Cesar Milan. By the final chapters I was not only sold on his philosophy, I wanted to be him. The discipline of his methods in following dog protocol in order to establish his leadership is pure zen—the focus and the physicality of it, the be here now of it.

I also enjoyed his personal story which is the first third of the book. He grew up on a farm with working dogs and the way he described the Mexican attitude towards dogs reminded me a lot of how dogs are viewed in Thailand where a dog is the lowliest of animals. The pariah dogs that tourists run across just about anywhere are almost as much a topic of indignation as the sex trade. The Buddhist precept against killing any living thing forbids euthanasia of unwanted animals so people are in the habit of dropping them off at temples. (In Mexico where there is no such precept in Catholocism, people feel free to be openly cruel to animals. Same in the US one might add.)

A family anecdote here: My Aunty Lily who loved dogs, but couldn't keep them anymore, started feeding the stray cats that would come around. My father didn't like them hanging around so he ordered that they be taken to the temple. Later when he got throat cancer, he consulted a Thai psychic by phone to find out why he had been stricken thus. The psychic (who lived in the States) told him that the great cat spirit was mad at him for sending those cats to the temple. And the tree spirit that lived in the tree he cut down in his front yard in Menlo Park was mad at him too. In order to appease these angry spirits, he had to go to the temple (across the Bay in Fremont), make amends and ask the monks to invite the tree spirit to live in the other tree, only it was already occupied so further negotiations had to be made to allow the first to move in. When he got cancer again the psychic said it wasn't his fault this time. What got me about this story was that the cats had a spirit that would speak up for them even though they, too, are pretty low on the Thai totem pole, not to mention that one could actually negotiate with tree spirits. And I thought tree spirits were just inhabitants of Thailand. (Try not to judge me too harshly on my animist streak. It's not rational, but cultural.)

So Cesar Milan came to the states alone, as an illegal, for the express purpose of living his dream of becoming a dog trainer for Hollywood films despite having no English and being homeless. The novelty of this dream charmed me. He didn't come, like most, to seek his fortune or get away from hardship. And then he rapidly achieves his dream (at least the part about working with dogs). People help him along the way hardly questioning his motives. When it become clear that his talent with difficult dogs is extraordinary he gets a real leg up. (This is the stuff that gets all the new age people going about how the universe will respond to your intentions.)

What he has to say about the state of dogs in America is as good a critique as any of the infantilized, neurotic, over pampering, consumerist culture we live in here. And then he sets out to cure what ails us, one dog at a time. We use this same phrase in my profession ie: we will help bring peace to the world one client at a time by helping people achieve peace in their homes and in their lives. Actually what he does with dog owners and dogs reminds me of the work that I do. The way it calls upon us to act instinctually in real time and provide solutions that make a difference immediately. This is part of the reason I so identified with him. (My client today had a meltdown and started to beat down all my suggestions, but I just stayed with her following her around and choosing my words carefully, until she worked herself from utter frustration to functionable without either of us loosing our dignity or her sending me home without a future appointment.)

He also inspired me to consider working with dogs so I could be privy to such a high level of interaction with an animal and as a way to enter a part of our culture that I haven't experienced. I thought I was going to do that by having children, but gave that up in the process of vetting the project. I may not get to do this either. It depends on how I sort out my relationship with Catherine now that there is no cat to glue us together when we're mad at each other.
