Causes, beliefs, and practices

Cargo cults are marked by a number of common characteristics, including a 'myth-dream' that is a synthesis of indigenous and foreign elements; the expectation of help from the ancestors; charismatic leaders; and lastly, belief in the appearance of an abundance of goods.

The indigenous societies of Melanesia were typically characterized by a 'Big Man' political system in which individuals gained prestige through gift exchanges. The more wealth a man could distribute, the more people in his debt, and the greater his renown. Those who were unable to reciprocate were identified as 'Rubbish men'. Faced, through colonialism, with foreigners with a seemingly unending supply of goods for exchange, indigenous Melanesians experienced 'value dominance.' That is, they were dominated by others in terms of their own (not the foreign) value system; exchange with foreigners left them feeling like Rubbish men.

Since the modern manufacturing process is unknown to them, members, leaders, and prophets of the cults maintain that the manufactured goods of the non-native culture have been created by spiritual means, such as through their deities and ancestors. These goods are intended for the local indigenous people, but the foreigners have unfairly gained control of these objects through malice or mistake. Thus, a characteristic feature of cargo cults is the belief that spiritual agents will, at some future time, give much valuable cargo and desirable manufactured products to the cult members.

Symbols associated with Christianity and modern Western society tend to be incorporated into their rituals as magical artifacts, for example the use of cross-shaped grave markers. Notable examples of cargo cult activity include the setting up of mock airstrips, airports, offices, and dining rooms, as well as the fetishization and attempted construction of Western goods, such as radios made of coconuts and straw. Believers may stage "drills" and "marches" with sticks for rifles and use military-style insignia and national insignia painted on their bodies to make them look like soldiers, thereby treating the activities of Western military personnel as rituals to be performed for the purpose of attracting the cargo.

Stories of Resistance: Root Causes of Migration in Honduras

A Report back

May 5, 2019

Buena Vista United Methodist Church, Alameda, California

____

On March 18-25, a delegation of nearly 75 faith leaders and immigrant justice advocates, mostly from the United States, and several joining from South America, traveled to Honduras to meet with grassroots and religious partners in order to more deeply understand the root causes of migration that have spurred thousands to flee Honduras.

The international, interfaith delegation met with organizations working and advocating for the rights of migrants and explored factors that are forcing migrants to flee, including: violence, environmental degradation, drug cartels, organized crime, corrupt security forces, and impunity for ongoing human rights violations.

Reverend Deborah Lee from Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity along with a panel of delegates will share inspiring images and stories of resistance from Honduran community partners in their defense of land and life, and discuss how we can support their resistance.

Momentum for treaty covering hazardous and noxious cargo

The IMO treaty covering compensation for damage caused by Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) transported by sea is the subject of a workshop underway at IMO Headquarters, London (26-27 April). The event is focused on helping governments to understand and implement the HNS Convention, and follows excellent progress made earlier this week, when Canada and Turkey signed up to the treaty. This brings the total contributing cargo to 28.7 million tonns – 72% of that needed for the treaty to enter into force.

By addressing practical issues raised by States implementing the Convention, the workshop aims to enable further governments to sign up to the treaty. These issues include how to report on contributing cargo - a step that also needs to be taken prior to a State being able to ratify or accede to the Convention. HNS incidents and risks, views from the shipping industry and a panel discussion by States that have implemented the Convention are all part of a busy agenda.

The event is organized in cooperation with the IOPC Funds, with IMO Legal Director, Frederick Kenney, and IOPC Funds Director, José Maura, addressing the opening session – both emphasizing the importance of the HNS Convention as the key missing piece in the puzzle of the international maritime liability and compensation regime.

This work is representative of IMO’s on-going efforts to support its Member countries in adopting and bringing in key regulations that help make shipping safer, cleaner and greener.

Cause of death: Bottom sole fell off due to oxidation (wtf!!!)

17 Apr 2004 9am

Sneezed twice and the force made holes in the leaves.

Sparrow B: That's exaggerating, gardener. I think lately you are becoming as exaggerating as I could be!

Gardener: Or maybe the holes are created each time Mr. Might-be Vampire said he will be visiting but didn't turn up in the end? Or maybe each time he did something dishonest, like eating the t0matoes dishonestly.. though he might have gone to the honest tree to confess, I'm not sure. He brought up that subject last week. And that bigger hole in the middle could be he didn't get a haircut when he told me he was going to, yesterday. And last night or this early morning he was considering about making a visit appointment with me.

Sparrow B: This time I got to be fair and square. Based on my visits to many plants and trees, I think the holes are created by just worms.

Gardener: Why are you so logical today?

Sparrow B: I'm always logical! Not just today. But if he is really visiting, what time would suit?

Gardener: I don't know how long it is going to take to run the errands for my neighbors today. Based on my nature, most likely I won't get p1zza and would go straight home after that - because it would be late, and I think Mr. Might-be Vampire might be thinking why am I not home yet. And I don't have access here when I'm not in the office/home. If it's today, best is after 12pm. If it's tomorrow, probably whole day will be in but I have 2 calls to make. But I can make the calls when he is around as long as he can entertain himself and Carrot at my place. He can finish the chips that I haven't opened so that I won't eat it anymore and go fat. I've finished the first packet already. But he shouldn't be eating too much as well, just a bowl. Or he can watch the TV that I've paid for but not been using? I might be digging tomorrow. He can find me in the back garden, down the driveway, see a staircase on the left, and walk down - that will be where I am if I'm digging.

Sparrow B: You got to go now.

Gardener: Yup.

Within the era of scientifically accepted 'we are the cause of climate change and global warming' and its inevitable consequences, can we afford new and further exploitation of fossil fuels?

"The world possesses the tools and technology needed to reduce carbon emissions, build a more sustainable economy and end our reliance on fossil fuels."

www.huffingtonpost.com/jimmy-carter/climate-change-who-wi...

Currently Wales and the UK are awash with a tied of new fossil fuel exploitation, shale gas, coal bed methane and new open cast coal mines. So often cited as bridging too renewables, or replacing imported fossil fuels.

13 April 2014: IPCC PRESS RELEASE

Greenhouse gas emissions accelerate despite reduction efforts.

"Scenarios show that to have a likely chance of limiting the increase in global mean temperature to two degrees Celsius, means lowering global greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 70 percent compared with 2010 by mid-century, and to near-zero by the end of this century. Ambitious mitigation may even require removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere."

ipcc.ch/pdf/ar5/pr_wg3/20140413_pr_pc_wg3_en.pdf

All of this new fossil fuel development will bridge to renewables, pay for it, not distract from it? Does our governance seem like they are leading the way to mitigating climate change, are we a shinning example to others countries to follow suit?

Doesn't a global bullet need to be bitten within a short time scale, or is the bullet simply being deflecting for future generations to deal with, and its real impact?
