A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines on to droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. It takes the form of a multicoloured arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.
In a "primary rainbow", the arc shows red on the outer part, and violet on the inner side. This rainbow is caused by light being refracted while entering a droplet of water, then reflected inside on the back of the droplet and refracted again when leaving it.
In a double rainbow, a second arc is seen outside the primary arc, and has the order of its colours reversed, red facing toward the other one, in both rainbows. This second rainbow is caused by light reflecting twice inside water droplets. The region between a double rainbow is dark, and is known as "Alexander's band" or "Alexander's dark band".
The rainbow is not located at a specific distance, but comes from any water droplets viewed from a certain angle relative to the Sun's rays. Thus, a rainbow is not a physical object, and cannot be physically approached. Indeed, it is impossible for an observer to manoeuvre to see any rainbow from water droplets at any angle other than the customary one of 42 degrees from the direction opposite the Sun. Even if an observer sees another observer who seems "under" or "at the end" of a rainbow, the second observer will see a different rainbow further off-yet, at the same angle as seen by the first observer.
A rainbow spans a continuous spectrum of colours. Any distinct bands perceived are an artefact of human colour vision, and no banding of any type is seen in a black-and-white photo of a rainbow, only a smooth gradation of intensity to a maximum, then fading towards the other side. For colours seen by a normal human eye, the most commonly cited and remembered sequence, in English, is Newton's sevenfold red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
Rainbows can be caused by many forms of airborne water. These include not only rain, but also mist, spray, and airborne dew.

Plant Productivity and Health
Improper fertility, management, or plants not adapted to site negatively impact plant productivity, vigor, and/or quality.
What is it?
Plants established in locations where the climate, soils, or moisture availability are unfavorable can be stressed and may not thrive even with excellent management. Natural events such as drought or cultural practices such as grazing and mowing can cause plant stress. Improper management (e.g., exorbitant plant populations)are a stressor that can affect plant productivity and health. Plants under stress are more susceptible to disease and insect damage. Symptoms of poor plant vigor and health may include slow growth, discoloration of leaves, wilting or drooping foliage, leaf drop, root pruning, changes in growth form and discolored roots, and even plant death.
Why is it important?
To meet productivity and conservation goals, it is important that plants are adapted to the site on which they are growing, established in proper populations, provided with enough nutrients, water, and sunshine, and protected from excessive levels of stress.
What can be done about it?
Using conservation practices can help establish and maintain plant productivity and health. Assistance from a crop specialist, grazing land specialist, forester, or biologist may be needed to set realistic production and conservation goals that consider species suitability, soils, climate, management options, and local data for similar cropping/forestry systems. The NRCS Web Soil Survey (websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm) is a source of soils information for the growth of crops and trees. Extension programs and educators from local universities are resources for cultural and management practices that keep plants healthy and productive. Nutrient management guides the rate, source, timing, and placement of nutrients as needed to meet production and health goals. Integrated pest management provides techniques to detect, avoid, and treat pests and diseases. Forestry conservation practices can remove and replace unhealthy trees and treat woody debris to reduce risks from insects and diseases. Conservation practices in cropping systems address soil problems such as erosion, compaction, low organic matter, or contaminants through the use of cover crops, new crop rotations, or changes in tillage and/or harvesting methods. Conservation practices in grazing systems can assist in alleviating stressors such as plant vigor and reduced production yields by increasing grazing distribution, managing forage stubble heights, and providing adequate rest periods during seasonal growth variations.

Combat Talons were used during Operation Just Cause, the United States invasion of Panama in December 1989 and January 1990. Three MC-130Es of the 8th Special Operations Squadron (8th SOS) from the 1st Special Operations Wing (1st SOW) were deployed to Hunter Army Air Field in Georgia within 48 hours of notification. The aircraft airlanded Rangers and heavy equipment of the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, into Rio Hato Military Airfield on 18 December 1989. The operation was conducted under total blackout conditions, with the aircrews using night vision goggles (NVG) and radar. The Combat Talons worked in conjunction with other 1st SOW assets, such as AC-130H Spectre gunships for the 16th SOS, HC-130P Combat Shadow aircraft from the 9th SOS, MH-53 PAVE LOW helicopters from the 20th SOS, and MH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters from the 55th SOS. In addition, the 919th SOW provided AC-130A gunships from the 711th SOS. Two F-117As dropped one 2,000 lb bomb each before Rangers parachuted into the area, encountering stiff resistance from the 6th and 7th Panamanian Defence Force (PDF) companies.
In this image, an MC-130E (serial number: 64-0571) of the 8th SOS evades ground fire as it attempts to take off with a crippled engine. At Rio Hato Airfield, three MC-130Es made combat landings under intense ground fire to set up a forward aerial refuelling and rearming point (FARP). Two aircraft were charged with setting up the FARP, and the third Combat Talon was configured as a medevac, remaining in position to extract wounded personnel from the airfield. The crews offloaded fuel for two hours in the southeast corner of the airfield, during which a fierce ground battle raged nearby. One MC-130E was struck by flying debris and forced to shut down an engine. The crippled aircraft took off on three engines while under intense ground fire. The action earned its pilot the Distinguished Flying Cross and was the first recorded three-engine takeoff under such conditions.
The 8th SOS is one of the oldest units in the USAF, initially organized as the 8th Aero Squadron on 21 June 1917 at Camp Kelly, Texas, and has an unbroken history of over 95 years of service to the United States. The squadron flew reconnaissance missions in the Dayton-Wright DH-4 during WW1, the North American B-25 Mitchell in WW2, the Douglas B-26 Invader during the Korean War, the Martin B-57 Canberra and Cessna A-37 Dragonfly during the Vietnam War. In 1974, the 8th SOS transitioned to the MC-130E Combat Talon I, flying special operation missions in Iran, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Bosnia, and Liberia. The squadron received the MC-130H in 1991, flying them alongside the MC-130E until 2006, when both variants were retired in favour of the Bell Boeing CV-22 Osprey.

The failure was caused by a suspected piston or sleeve crank failure which caused a series of violent back fires which completely smashed the reduction gear casing, in fact blew out the torque meter cylinders completely and smashed out the section of the reduction gear casing which carries the oil passages to the propeller This prevented the propeller being feathered and as the torque plates were sheared away, allowed the propeller to rotate when the engine was stopped.

"When we arrived on the scene, all were anxious to investigate the failure cause. Transpired the starboard engine suddenly seized due to catastrophic internal failure. The massive inertial energy generated by the propeller had to go somewhere, so the torque meter pistons thought it was time for them to get moving. They flailed about destroying the reduction gear housing along with the propeller oil system. As a consequence the propeller could not be feathered and the only thing holding it in place was airflow on the rotating blades and the few cm of reduction gear stub in the crankshaft. They were so so lucky the prop didn't fall off and bounce through the aircraft on landing."

However bot flies occasionally target humans, dogs and cats. In these species bots may be found in the throat or eye — where they can cause severe irritation — or in the nasal passages where they can cause breathing difficulty. Bots do not develop to maturity in species other than sheep and goats.

Nasal bots are the maggots or larvae of the sheep nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis, which is present throughout the world wherever there are sheep and goats. It was introduced into Australia in sheep in the early 1900s and was first recorded in Western Australia in 1919. They may now be less common in areas where the macrocyclic lactone (ML) anthelmintics, such as ivermectin, have been frequently used.
Nasal bots usually cause little harm to host animals and owners are rarely aware of the infestations unless expelled bots are seen. Individual sheep may show signs of nasal irritation or (rarely) breathing difficulties and flocks may show signs of disturbance due to bot fly attacks.
Life cycle of the nasal bot fly
Fly activity is seasonal and generally peaks in spring and late summer when temperatures exceed 20 degrees Celsius, but the pattern of fly activity varies between regions.
The female fly has a life span of approximately two days in summer and four weeks in cold weather. In cold climates, such as Russia or Siberia, there are only one or two generations each year, but in hotter places such as much of Australia, there may be five or six generations of flies.
The sheep nasal bot fly deposits larvae, not eggs, on its host, unlike the related bot fly of horses (Gasterophilus species) which attaches eggs to horse hair. Once larvae have been deposited at the sheep’s nostrils, they move and grow within the nasal cavity and the frontal sinuses. They develop through three larval stages and when mature (about 3cm long) the larvae are sneezed out. This is the only stage likely to be observed, typically when sheep are in a shed or yards.
The rate of development of larvae within the sheep’s head is highly variable and can take as long as ten months or as little as six weeks. Expelled bots form pupae in the soil and flies emerge from these after a few weeks. The duration of each stage of the life cycle is highly variable, mainly dependent on temperature.
Effects of nasal bots
Most infestations pass unnoticed, but sheep may show disturbed behaviour when bot flies are present. This includes snorting, stamping the front feet, running in short bursts and burying their noses into the fleeces of other sheep. Sheep may congregate in shaded places where the flies are less active. Infested sheep may have a discharge from the nostrils, difficulties in breathing and may sneeze or cough.
The economic impact of nasal bots is debatable. In Australia they are generally not considered to be of economic importance. In some countries nasal bots are believed to cause reduced body and fleece growth, mostly due to the disturbance of flocks. They have also been suspected of suppressing normal immunity, possibly predisposing animals to secondary bacterial infections including chronic sinusitis. Nasal bots do not affect the ability of rams to find, by smell, ewes in oestrus.
Bot flies occasionally target humans, dogs and cats. In these species bots may be found in the throat or eye, where they can cause severe irritation. Sometimes (rarely) they are found in the nasal passages where they can cause breathing difficulty. Bots do not develop to maturity in species other than sheep and goats.
Diagnosis
There is no commercially available test which will identify infested sheep. The flies themselves are a little smaller than the common blowfly but are rarely seen. The peculiar behaviour of sheep when the bot flies are active may indicate that some sheep in the flock are likely to become infested. A nasal discharge, with or without coughing and sneezing, would arouse suspicion but is not diagnostic for nasal bot infestation.
Sometimes a diagnosis is made incidentally when, while shearing or drenching a sheep, a bot is expelled from the sheep’s nostrils onto the handler. Similarly, expelled bots are sometimes found in water or feed troughs. Bots may be more common in horned breeds and sometimes when sheep are dehorned bots may emerge from the horn core.
The signs in sheep could resemble some other diseases that affect sheep behaviour. Possible alternative diagnoses should always be considered and excluded before making a diagnosis of nasal bot infestation. If in doubt, seek veterinary advice.
Goats rarely show any signs of infestation.
Treatment with an effective product can be used as an indirect method of diagnosis. If the signs disappear following treatment, it is reasonable to make a retrospective diagnosis of nasal bot infestation.
Treatment
Treatment with an anthelminthic solely for nasal bots is rarely warranted unless it is believed the health of animals is being affected by these parasites. Three macrocyclic lactone (ML) drenches (ivermectin, abamectin, moxidectin) and closantel are registered for treatment against nasal bot in sheep, whereas only abamectin is registered for use in goats.
However, treatment, other than where significant ill effects from nasal bots were suspected, would be contrary to current recommended worm control practices and could contribute to the already high level of worm resistance to the ML chemicals.
