Eng:

Bamburgh Castle is a castle on the northeast coast of England, by the village of Bamburgh in Northumberland. It is a Grade I listed building.

The site was originally the location of a Celtic Brittonic fort known as Din Guarie and may have been the capital of the kingdom of Bernicia from its foundation in c. 420 to 547. After passing between the Britons and the Anglo-Saxons three times, the fort came under Anglo-Saxon control in 590. The fort was destroyed by Vikings in 993, and the Normans later built a new castle on the site, which forms the core of the present one. After a revolt in 1095 supported by the castle's owner, it became the property of the English monarch.

In the 17th century, financial difficulties led to the castle deteriorating, but it was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian era industrialist William Armstrong, who completed its restoration. The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is open to the public.

Classiebawn Castle was largely built in the late 19th century and has been occupied by several generations of decedents. It was inherited in July 1939 by Edwina Mountbatten, who, with her husband Admiral of the Fleet Louis Mountbatten, made several improvements, installing electricity and a mains water supply. After his wife's death in February 1960, Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, spent his summers there until his death when his boat was blown up off the coast of Mullaghmore by the IRA in August 1979. The castle and surrounding lands are now owned by the estate of Hugh Tunney (1928–2011), a deceased businessman from who bought the castle and surrounding estate in 1991 after having leased it for many years. - Wikipedia

There is no public access yet it stands out so elegantly against the cliffs behind it that it is possibly one of the most photographed privately-owned castles in Ireland

Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnáin) is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie.Eilean Donan Castle stands at the meeting point of Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh.

Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War

Drum Castle consists of a plain late 13th Century keep of four storeys. To this has been added a Large L-shaped range of 1619, and the castle was extended again in the 19th Century.

There is a walled garden with old roses, and in the grounds is the old wood of Drum, an ancient oak Woodland.

Originally built as a castle to repel Norse invaders in the 13th century, Eilean Donan has had a long and interesting (and chequered) history.

It sits at the meeting point of Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh in Scotland. As you might have guessed, this castle has adorned many a Scottish calendar and been frequently used in many movies and TV series e.g., Highlander.

Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country; home to the Duke of Northumberland's family, the Percys, for over 700 years.

Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK's most significant heritage destinations and best days out in Northumberland.

This must surely have been one of the most impressive castles in England when it was at the height of its power. For hundreds of years Corfe Castle, on the Isle of Purbeck in the east of Dorset, was one of the strongest castles in the country. There had been fortifications on the site for several hundred years before the Normans decided to build a larger castle. Building commenced in the 1080's and it was finally overcome in the English Civil War in 1646, when Parliamentarian troops infiltrated the castle in disguise. The castle was subsequently undermined (or slighted), with severe damage being caused to the walls and the buildings.

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most iconic images of Scotland. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic mountain scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Duich, Scotland.

The first fortified castle was constructed in the mid 13th century. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built. Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for almost 200 years, until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of work the castle was re-opened in 1932.

From the archives - Wales, 2008. I finally decided to work on my photos from our trip. After staying with my cousins in Doncaster England, we drove down to stay in Laugharne Wales for a week. Every evening we walked from our hotel along the waters edge, past the castle to the little town. It was such a relaxing way to end a busy day of sight seeing.

During the 7 year war in 1756-63, French sailors were imprisoned here in dreadful conditions. The sailors referred to the place as ‘le chateau’ hence castle being adopted into its name.

Helmsley

The first castle at Helmsley was built in the early 12th century by Walter Espec, who also founded nearby Rievaulx Abbey and Kirkham Priory.

It was later modernised by Robert de Roos and his descendants. It was converted into living quarters and a luxurious mansion by the Manners family.

The castle faced its greatest challenge during the English Civil War. Held for King Charles, It endured a three month siege before Cromwell's men blew up the Great Keep, slicing it in half with the explosion.

Helmsley Castle is now in the care of English Heritage. It has recently undergone a extensive makeover making it more accessible to visitors. There is a new visitor centre with a range of exhibitions covering the social and domestic, as well as the military, aspects of the fortress.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

Castle Doorwerth is located on the banks of the Rhine River, between Wageningen and Arnhem. The castle’s immediate surroundings are beautiful; it is located at the point where the steep wooded lateral moraine of the Veluwezoom merges into the broad floodplains of the Lower Rhine. In between the two geological areas lies the beautiful medieval castle, surrounded by abundant moats. The castle is mentioned in historical documents dating back as far as 1260, making it one of the oldest castles in Holland.

The oldest tree in Holland

Since 1280, the castle has grown to become a picturesque complex of buildings with a ward and an outer ward. During the Second World War, the castle suffered major damage, and after undergoing restorations for a period of 37 years, it is once again the beautiful water castle it used to be.

One of the oldest trees in Holland is also located on the Castle Doorwerth grounds. The trunk of the Robinia (acacia) tree has a circumference of seven meters (almost 23 feet), and was planted around the year 1600. Two similar trees were destroyed during the Battle of Arnhem.

the ruins of Craigend Castle on one of the walks in Mugdock Park between Milngavie reservoir and the Campsie Hills, not far from Glasgow. According to Wiki this country house was at one point built up by the Smith family, who founded the great Glasgow booksellers John Smith & Son, which I remember fondly, many floors of all sorts of books, piles more in corners between the shelves, a bookseller once patronised by Robert Burns among others across a couple of centuries until the arrival of the large chain bookstores killed it and there went 200 years of tradition replaced by identikit stores that sold coffee and retailed books like they were tins of beans...
