Country house, romantic garden, 14th century moated castle - all in a beautiful wooded estate
From the early 18th century, British landscape gardeners had been creating gardens inspired by pictures, but by 1800 a backlash had set in. Critics considered the grassy vistas designed by Capability Brown too smooth and tidy. Scotney's picturesque garden is a last fling in this backlash style of gardening
Warkworth Castle is a ruined medieval building in the village of the same name in the English county of Northumberland. The village and castle occupy a loop of the River Coquet, less than a mile from England's north-east coast.
The first foundations of the Dutch Renaissance mansion, Nyenrode Castle were laid in the 13 th century on the banks of the Vecht river by Knight Gerard Splinter van Ruwiel. Later, the French used it as their headquarters during an invasion in the 17 th century, and from the 18th through the 20th century it was the home of two successive merchant families.
Following the Second World War, it was sold to an educational institute which would later become Nyenrode Business University; the private business school continues to use the castle as its primary estate. The University grounds are private, but you can garner a good view of the Castle when floating past it on the Vecht river.

Aracena Castle
Prominent attractions in the town include Aracena Castle and the Priory Church, together known as the Castillo-Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, built between the 13th and 15th centuries over the ruins of an earlier castle. The oldest sections are of late Gothic-Mudéjar style.
Aracena Castle was erected in the thirteenth century, during the Islamic period, and was itself built on the site of an ancient Moorish castle. The walled enclosure was partitioned inside, with the tower of homage, or castle keep, defending the barrier that divided its interior. The population of Aracena settled around this structure, giving rise to the current urban landscape. During the late Middle and Modern Ages, Aracena continued growing from the Cerro del Castillo [Castle Hill] into the valley, first as unattached land dependent on Seville and later, in the seventeenth century, as a feudal estate under the jurisdiction of the Count-Duke of Olivares. Still later, it was under the Count of Altamira, who carried the title of Prince of Aracena.
The fortress consists of the alcazaba, or citadel, with its watch tower, cistern and walls; these are flanked by other towers, as well as a fence line that, in its interior, once accommodated medieval living quarters.

Raglan Castle (Welsh: Castell Rhaglan) is a late medieval castle located just north of the village of Raglan in the county of Monmouthshire in south east Wales. The modern castle dates from between the 15th and early 17th-centuries, when the successive ruling families of the Herberts and the Somersets created a luxurious, fortified castle, complete with a large hexagonal keep, known as the Great Tower or the Yellow Tower of Gwent. Surrounded by parkland, water gardens and terraces, the castle was considered by contemporaries to be the equal of any other in England or Wales. During the English Civil War the castle was held on behalf of Charles I and was taken by Parliamentary forces in 1646. In the aftermath, the castle was slighted, or deliberately put beyond military use; after the restoration of Charles II, the Somersets declined to restore the castle. Raglan Castle became first a source of local building materials, then a romantic ruin, and is now a modern tourist attraction.

The iconic ruin of Dunluce Castle bears witness to a long and tumultuous history. First built on the dramatic coastal cliffs of north County Antrim by the MacQuillan family around 1500, the earliest written record of the castle was in 1513.
It was seized by the ambitious MacDonnell clan in the 1550's, who set about stamping their mark on the castle under the leadership of the famous warrior chieftain Sorely Boy MacDonnell during an era of violence, intrigue and rebellion.
In the 17th century Dunluce was the seat of the earls of County Antrim and saw the establishment of a small town in 1608. Visitors can explore the findings of archaeological digs within the cobbled streets and stone merchants’ houses of the long-abandoned Dunluce Town.

Skenfrith Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Skenfrith in Monmouthshire, Wales. The fortification was established by the Normans in the wake of the invasion of England in 1066, to protect the route from Wales to Hereford. Possibly commissioned by William fitz Osbern, the Earl of Hereford, the castle comprised earthworks with timber defences. In 1135, a major Welsh revolt took place and in response King Stephen brought together Skenfrith Castle and its sister fortifications of Grosmont and White Castle to form a lordship known as the "Three Castles", which continued to play a role in defending the region from Welsh attack for several centuries
Chepstow Castle (Welsh: Cas-gwent) at Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales is the oldest surviving post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Located above cliffs on the River Wye, construction began in 1067 under the instruction of the Norman Lord William fitzOsbern. Originally known as Striguil, it was the southernmost of a chain of castles built in the Welsh Marches, and with its attached lordship took the name of the adjoining market town in about the 14th century.

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until 1633. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison.
Threave Castle, Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway. The forecast for this morning was mist, anyone who follows my photography will know that I like nothing better than a good bit of mist. Unfortunately the mist wasn't close enough to the castle, so I decided to see what sunrise brought. The is not always the ideal location for sunrise, (its behind you), but if you have the right clouds you might be lucky, but what you will definately always get is that point where the sun comes over the hill behind you and lights up the castle perfectly.

I'm setting up a folder specially for my pics of the fascinating area in Turkey known as Cappadocia. It is world famous for its natural geological formations, the most well known being the "fairy chimneys" at Pasabag, and the daily hot-air balloon rides. Although entirely natural in origins, there are many old man-made cave dwellings, churches and networks of tunnels as high/deep as 11 storeys carved out from some of the strange looking hills and terrain. Some of these man-made caves have been recently converted into boutique hotels and restaurants while most of them are left empty and unused. The biggest and tallest hill with those dwellings from days gone by is shown in this pic and is called the Uchisar Castle.
Loch Linnhe near Port Appin in Argyll and Bute. Castle Stalker is in the distance in the middle of the shot. It is built on a small island on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe .
The original castle was a small fort, built around 1320 by Clan McDougall. Around 1388 the Stewarts took over the Lordship of Lorn, and it is believed that they built the castle in its present form around the 1440s.
Castle Stalker is now in private ownership and is open to the public at selected times during the summer.
Having been forced to climb Snowdon the day before due to the poor weather forecast we spent time driving around the area. With very low clouds and hazy conditions it was hard to take any reasonable photographs. A wonderful place which we were fortunate enough to have to ourselves for 15 minutes.
Nestled in woods in Germany lies the Eltz castle, one of many that litter the countryside. It has survived through history without ever been destroyed and is still owned by the same family which has lived there since the 12th century. The old cobbled approach seems little changed over the years, you can imagine life here many centuries ago.
Doune Castle was built as the home of Regent Albany, ‘Scotland’s uncrowned king’. Doune is a popular filming location and has featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones and Outlander.
Dunster castle stands on the North East edge of the Exmoor national park in Somerset, England. Some parts of castle date back to the 13th century, though the hill on which it stands has been fortified since the late Anglo Saxon period. The Luttrell family were in residence for over 600 years, during which time many changes were made, the latest being in the in 1867..
