Mulgrave Castle near Sandsend, North Yorkshire. Replacing an earlier motte-and-bailey fortification, Mulgrave Castle acted as an administrative centre for the vast Yorkshire estates of its owners and in the seventeenth century found a new role as a hunting lodge. It was re-fortified during the Civil War and then slighted on the orders of Parliament in 1647.

This building goes back to the 16th century and Bonnie Prince Charlie once stayed there.

In this photo I tried to make use of a yellow filter to enhance the sky values in a black and white image. So I added a Cokin filter holder and Cokin light yellow filter. The effect is not as pronounced as I would have expected. Maybe I will have to go red next time.

Castle Bolton, Wensleydale, Yorkshire, was built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton. The castle was seriously damaged during the English Civil War.

One of my favourite places a very impressive Castle nestled high on top of a craggy hilltop.

Egeskov Castle History

Egeskov is a typical example of a Renaissance water castle built in the middle of a lake in the 14th century. The castle was finally erected in 1554, over oaken piles from where the castle gets its name.

You will not find a castle in a better state of preservation than Egeskov.

The gardens, the moats and even the drawbridges that were used to isolate the castle from civil war activities during the 15th century continue to be in an excellent state. The added attractions are the gardens, the parks, galleries and the stupendous collection of old cars and motorcycles

We had a nice trip through the mountains here to finally arrive at this castle and it was totally worth it.... .

Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War

The Castle of Xàtiva is a double fortress located in the Sierra Vernisa above the city of Xàtiva.

This fortification has its origins in an Iberian construction that took advantage of one of the highest parts of the mountain at this point (Minor Castle). The Romans, later, when conquering it, added a second fortress to the other high point that the mountain presented that communicated with the previous one (Castillo Mayor). Both were reformed by the Arabs, who also widened the wall, until it practically coincided with the one currently known. Later, with greater or lesser reforms, these walls and the castle faced the conquest of Jaime I, the rebellion of the Germanías and the War of Succession, but the base of the architectural complex was this.

Drum Castle consists of a plain late 13th Century keep of four storeys. To this has been added a Large L-shaped range of 1619, and the castle was extended again in the 19th Century.

There is a walled garden with old roses, and in the grounds is the old wood of Drum, an ancient oak Woodland.

Bodiam Castle is a 14th-century moated castle near Robertsbridge in East Sussex, England. It was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War. Of quadrangular plan, Bodiam Castle has no keep, having its various chambers built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts. Its corners and entrance are marked by towers, and topped by crenellations. Its structure, details and situation in an artificial watery landscape indicate that display was an important aspect of the castle's design as well as defence. It was the home of the Dalyngrigge family and the centre of the manor of Bodiam.

Possession of Bodiam Castle passed through several generations of Dalyngrigges, until their line became extinct, when the castle passed by marriage to the Lewknor family. During the Wars of the Roses, Sir Thomas Lewknor supported the House of Lancaster, and when Richard III of the House of York became king in 1483, a force was despatched to besiege Bodiam Castle. It is unrecorded whether the siege went ahead, but it is thought that Bodiam was surrendered without much resistance. The castle was confiscated, but returned to the Lewknors when Henry VII of the House of Lancaster became king in 1485. Descendants of the Lewknors owned the castle until at least the 16th century.

By the start of the English Civil War in 1641, Bodiam Castle was in the possession of John Tufton. He supported the Royalist cause, and sold the castle to help pay fines levied against him by Parliament. The castle was subsequently dismantled, and was left as a picturesque ruin until its purchase by John Fuller in 1829. Under his auspices, the castle was partially restored before being sold to George Cubitt, 1st Baron Ashcombe, and later to Lord Curzon, both of whom undertook further restoration work. The castle is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument. It has been owned by The National Trust since 1925, donated by Lord Curzon on his death, and is open to the public.

Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in the country; home to the Duke of Northumberland's family, the Percys, for over 700 years.

Combining magnificent medieval architecture with sumptuous Italianate State Rooms, Alnwick Castle is one of the UK's most significant heritage destinations and best days out in Northumberland.

This must surely have been one of the most impressive castles in England when it was at the height of its power. For hundreds of years Corfe Castle, on the Isle of Purbeck in the east of Dorset, was one of the strongest castles in the country. There had been fortifications on the site for several hundred years before the Normans decided to build a larger castle. Building commenced in the 1080's and it was finally overcome in the English Civil War in 1646, when Parliamentarian troops infiltrated the castle in disguise. The castle was subsequently undermined (or slighted), with severe damage being caused to the walls and the buildings.

Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most iconic images of Scotland. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic mountain scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

There’s a castle built into the caldera rim at Crater Lake that is best seen from the boat ride around the lake,

A study of the section, composed of layers of hard, resistant material such as the andesite and obsidian interspersed in the soft, less resistant layers of fragmental pumice, explains why erosion has produced the castle-like feature. In addition to the scenic value of The Pumice Castle, it is a significant scientific feature in that it is evidence of a pumice eruption which occurred earlier than the ejection of material represented by the great thickness of pumice exposed at the top of the crater wall, and which mantles the region of miles beyond the crater rim. - NPSHistory
