A highly recommended destination if ever in Scotland.

The castle, called the Borgwal, was built between 1350 and 1375.

The castle was then in a sparsely populated area. Here and there there was only one farm, there was no question of village construction. In 1623 Johan van Reede bought the castle. After that he started working on the foundation of the current village of Renswoude.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your comments!

Compiled by C.H.C.A. van Sypesteyn (1857 - 1937), a valuable art collection forms the foundation of the Castle-Museum Sypesteyn in Loosdrecht. In addition to the collection of portraits, furniture, silver and glass objects, clocks and sculptures, there is also a beautiful collection of porcelain. The Loosdrecht porcelain is particularly worth seeing.

The castle gardens

A garden with hedges, moats and decorative wrought-iron gates characterize Sypesteyn Castle. Via paths and bridges, you can walk around the maze and cross the canal and take a leisurely stroll through the orchards, the park and the castle garden. You will discover all sorts of indigenous and exotic trees during your stroll.

Tribute to Van Sypesteyn

The lord of the castle did not build it merely as a place to house his art collection. As the last descendant of the Van Sypesteyn line, he wanted to build the castle to pay tribute to his family. The stunning garden and park were built in the 17th-century style. Surrounded by the Loosdrecht lakes and the Vecht River, the area around the castle is also magnificent.

Le Château de Vianden fut construit pendant la période du 11e au 14e siècle sur les assises d'un castel romain et d'un refuge carolingien; il est une des plus grandes et plus belles résidences féodales des époques romane et gothique de l’Europe.

In Carolingian times, the castle was originally a decagonal tower, later transformed into a chapel. This chapel, the " Little Palace" and the "Great Palace" - the most beautiful parts of the castle - were erected in the first half of the 13th century. The Juliers Quarter, on the west side of the Great Palace, dates from the beginning of the 14th century, whereas the Nassau Quarter was only built at the beginning of the 17th century.

The castle was defended by strong fortifications, by gates and towers, of which notable examples are the " White Tower" on the northwest side, and the " Black Tower" on the northeast side.

You entered the castle through five gates, the first of which had a drawbridge and the fifth a descending grid. After this gate, you could enter the Little Palace by way of a staircase and a portal.

The first house was build in the thirteenth century as a hunting lodge used by the counts and dukes of Gelre. The house was named 'Pauwenburcht' (Peacock Castle) because of the white peacocks they kept there. The dukes of Gelre used to wear the feathers on their helmets.

The present house was build in 1905 on the foundations of a house dating from the seventeenth century.

Staverden Castle is build on the foundations of a seventeenth century house.

At the backside of the house lies a small island in a pond. On the the island you can find the tomb of Eleonora. This Eleonora lived at Wildenborgh Castle, one of the eight castles of Vorden. She had a lover, who went on a crusade in the Holy Land. When he was away, another man wanted to gain her by force. When her lover returned home, he was killed by his rival. Eleonora wanted to escape this evil man and fled to Staverden, where a mighty knight lived, who gave her protection. She stayed there for the rest of her unhappy life, always dressed in black.

After her death she was buried on the island in the pond. On moonlit nights, the black lady is seen there, walking to and fro on the island, wringing her hands and lamenting about her lost love.

Montreal is a Crusader castle on the eastern side of the Arabah, perched on the side of a rocky, conical mountain, looking out over fruit trees below. The ruins, called Shoubak or Shawbak in Arabic, are located in modern town of Shoubak in Jordan.

This was a crusader castle originally, but it was destroyed about 70 years after being built. Montreal castle finally fell to the famous Saladin after a two year siege, and most of what remains today was built by Mameluks.

Odiham Castle (also known locally as King John's Castle) is a ruined castle situated near Odiham in Hampshire, United Kingdom.

It is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign. The site was possibly chosen by King John because he had visited the area in 1204 and it lay halfway between Windsor and Winchester.

In 1215 it was from Odiham that King John rode out to Runnymede, where he met the barons and attached his seal to the Magna Carta. A year later Odiham Castle was captured by the French after a two-week siege during the First Barons' War in 1216. The garrison of just 13 surrendered on 9 July 1216. At some point over the next nine years the keep was completely rebuilt, possibly to remedy the damage done to it by the French forces. At the same time the mound on which the keep sat was raised by 5 metres and an inner moat surrounding the keep was added to the defences.

In 1238 Simon de Montfort married King John's daughter Eleanor just two years after she had been granted Odiham by her brother, King Henry III. In the following year a kitchen was added on a bridge over the inner moat and a new hall was added on the outside of the keep. During the same period a second building was constructed over the moat, this time on the south eastern side of the keep, to provide extra living space.

In 1263 De Montfort rebelled against Henry and died at the Battle of Evesham in 1265; Eleanor was exiled. Odiham Castle was again retained by the Crown.

The castle was also involved in the rebellion led by the powerful Despenser family against Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella of France, the wife of Edward II.

Odiham Castle hosted Parliament at least once, in 1303. King David II of Scotland, after his capture at the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, was imprisoned here for 11 years. He was held under a light guard and was allowed to keep a household. Using the castle as a prison seems to have been common practice during the 13th and 14th centuries; the nearby Manor of Greywell was required to provide guards one night in three.

By the 15th century Odiham was used only as a hunting lodge, and in 1605 it was described as a ruin.

In 1792 the Basingstoke Canal was built through the southern corner of the bailey.

Henkenshage Castle, locally known as Kasteel Henkenshage, lies in the village of Sint-Oedenrode, in the North Brabant province in the Netherlands.

Henkenshage may look like a medieval castle but it is not. Although it was built during the 14th century under the name Hanekenshage it was just a simple building. During the 15th century it was also known under the name Strijpe or Streepen.

In 1748 Henkenshage Castle was sold to Willem, Baron of Haren. In 1801 it was fitted as a convent for Augustinian nuns.

Around 1850 the castle was bought by Pieter J. de Girard de Mielet van Coehoorn. At that time the castle was still a simple manor with no stories. He had the castle rebuilt by the famous Dutch architect PJH. Cuypers, who also rebuilt De Haar Castle and built the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Cuypers built the two towers, added a story, replaced the main entrance to the house from the south to the north side and built the gate building.

In 1940 Henkenshage came into possession of the local government. During WWII it was used as a distribution office and during the liberation in 1944 it was the headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division.

At present the castle is used by a catering company and can not be visited. So, although Henkenshage Castle is not a real medieval castle, I think it has a lot of atmosphere.

Castillo de Medinaceli (Soria, Spain). It could be any castle perched on the night waiting for some unlikely enemy. I've always loved its imposing simplicity. Allegedlyأبو عامر محمد بن أبي عامر ابن عبد الله المعافري‎ (Abu ʿAmir Muhammad ben Abi ʿAmir al-Maʿafirí or "Almanzor" in Spanish) died here. Once Almanzar was over, the Cordoba's Califate went down pretty fast and the Northern kingdoms (mostly Christians, with Muslim affiliates) advanced South quickly.

As the new travel restrictions were around the corner, I took the last opportunity to pop to Germany and visit the world famous Neuschwanstein castle. The palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in honour of the composer Richard Wagner. It is one of the most visited sites in Germany and normally heaving with internal visitors.

Country house, romantic garden, 14th century moated castle - all in a beautiful wooded estate

From the early 18th century, British landscape gardeners had been creating gardens inspired by pictures, but by 1800 a backlash had set in. Critics considered the grassy vistas designed by Capability Brown too smooth and tidy. Scotney's picturesque garden is a last fling in this backlash style of gardening
