For his Branding 2 project, Scott Strathern chose to brand the identity of a waterfront boutique hotel on the shores of False Creek in Vancouver. The result is a refreshing take on a modern hotel that meets the needs of his audience — smart, design savvy, cool, and hip people in the know. The brand package consists of competitive analysis, moodboard, environment design, logo design and miscellaneous branded applications.

Daybreak is a master-planned community designed using a traditional neighborhood development model (TND) which means that all homes within the community are within a five-minute walk or bike ride of a major amenity such as a park, the lake, or a shopping area, reducing resident's dependence on automobile travel and providing the opportunity for a healthier lifestyle.

Daybreak was ranked as the 6th Best Selling Master Planned Community in the Nation for 2009.

House was designed and built by Arts & Architecture Case Study architect Beverley David Thorne in around 1964, for the Western Division President of the US Steel Corporation, Loren J. Westhaven. The house is built entirely of steel, and was erected and welded together by both Thorne and Westhaver themselves.

It's been modified on the exterior considerably since it was originally built, modified to have a more "traditional" look , with more walls and smaller windows. Original design was clean octogon with louvered window walls.

Isn't that cantilevered deck amazing?

This house is just across the street and a few houses south of the house we rented (which was itself an architectural treasure - a 1959 Vladimir Ossipoff design)

S106A = A section 106 agreement, otherwise known as a 'Planning Gain Agreement' - by which a developer, in return for planning permission to build private homes on an area of green space, agrees to give a benefit back to the community equal to the opportunities lost by the removal of that space for leisure and recreation.

It may just be that by August 08 we shall see work starting on the sports pavilion on the old Victoria Jubilee Allotments site off Hamstead Road. (The homes here have been built on part of the site. In return the developer - Westbury Homes and then Charles Church - will fulfil the contract of a planning gain agreement with Birmingham City Council). On Tuesday morning 20 May 08, this site-meeting on Parklands Avenue with - left to right in my photo - Cllr Mahmood Hussain, residents who I've not met yet, Cllr Kim Brom, Alan Orr our Constituency Planning Officer, my good friend Liz England from the Handsworth Park Association and Basil Hylton, Chairman of Handsworth Cricket Club (hope I've got that right) and Frank James, Basil's representative on the park committee. Alan said he'd met the representative of Charles Church, the developer of the housing on the site, and that he had agreed with Alan that the 'trigger' point for implementing the terms of the Section 106 Agreement on the VJA site had been arrived at. Sales of new homes on the site have been given impetus through affordable housing schemes overseen by Midland Heart, a locally prominent registered social landlord and Housing Association. (There is already a growing residents' group on Parklands - the name of the new housing). In other words we are now about to get the 80 new allotments, cricket pitch, two soccer pitches, sports pavilion and children's play areas. I will be sceptical up to the moment I see the work beginning but it was a good meeting.

Oh, poor package design. I see how you've squandered your last penny and somehow have found your way back into my hands. I forgive you.

THE STORY:

Seems an old client that I worked with at a studio long-ago, has sold their product and patents to another company. This new company has moved-on and even devised a new package design.

Today I found it on the shelves of a local electronics store. It's been redesigned, but it's not what I had ever imagined. Not that my original designs were anything spectacular, but this one is um... not so hot. Suffers from a lot of ill typography and has a slight case of bad printing.

Like a son or daughter going out into the wilderness, it seems to have returned to me a little battered, scarred and ironically enough, "abused"

I'd reach out to this company again but think that the product may be nearing its life expectancy anyway. It's a little redundant now that replacement CDs are cheap and MP3s are circulated without. I can't see too many people spending $10 on 5 throw-away pieces of film to protect throw-away discs.

THE BACKSTORY:

In the beginning, I remember creating the two package designs on the left. Those, plus another idea based on condom wrappers that was too edgy for the client. My thought was that it needed some controversy to help the marketing… That didn't fly. Anyway, this was all back in 2003.

Love to hear if anyone else has a similar case study.

Personnel from the Forest Service and partner agencies gathered Aug. 8, 2017 to study and discuss decisions made and consequences of the Mormon Fire of 2016. The gathering was used as a learning opportunity for future fire managers and other personnel involved in making decisions about how to manage wildfires. Various locations were visited to illustrate different decision points during the fire and give participants a better idea of what types of landscape and challenges fire managers might face. For his Branding 2 project, Robert Soo chose to brand the identity of a Vancouver waterfront boutique hotel. Like the land itself, the Loft logo is dynamic and mutable, capable of varying moods. The logo makes use of a variety of backings drawn from landscape paintings in the public domain that capture the majesty of the local environment. These various paintings are unified together by the Loft symbol within them that uses the paintings as a frame. The brand package consists of competitive analysis, moodboards, environment design, logo design and miscellaneous branded applications.
