This is a shot from the summit of Pico de Canigou looking across at a french climber who has made his way part way across the final approach ridge. Just ten minutes earlier I had gingerly made my way over those pinnacles.

L’abbaye de Saint-Martin du Canigou, fondée l’an 1001 par un comte de Cerdagne, est situé au coeur du massif du Canigou, 1 094 mètres d’altitude sur un éperon rocheux au-dessus de la vallée du Cady.
Ce havre de paix niché dans un endroit magnifique, paisible et verdoyant et est seulement accessible à pied depuis le village de Casteil, après une montée d’environ 40 minutes.
L’abbaye de Saint-Martin du Canigou est maintenant habité par la Communauté Les Beautudes.
Pas loin de l’abbaye est un escalier au belvédère, d'où vous aurez une vue imprenable sur l’ensemble, et surtout le monastère!
An oratorium here is recorded already in 996. Count Guifred Cabreta, grandson of Wilfred the Hairy (a person I was interested in since ages. We will "meet" him later) donated land and funds for the erection of a monastery in atonement for the murder of his own son.
The abbey was built around the older oratorium and already 1009 a church was consecrated and dedicated to Saint Martin by the Bishop of Elne, who was Count GuifredŽs brother. In the document a monk named Sclua is mentioned as the builder. Sclua may have been, what was later called an architect.
In 1012 the relics of Saint Gauderique were transferred to Saint-Martin, adding importance to the place.
Following a medievial tradition (eg William of Gellone, Bernard II, Lord of Lippe) Count Guifried later left his wife, quit his worldy (sinful) life and entered the Benedictian convent here as a monk. He died at this monastery in 1049.
Shortly after that the importance of the monastery dwindeled dramatically. An earthquake ruined the monastery in 1428. The rebuilding took decades.
The small, remote convent was later threatend by food-shortage as well as by gangs of smugglers and raiders, who filled the frontier area with terror, the monastery was secularized. In 1781 the last five monks and the abbot left the buildings. The complex fell into disrepair and were used as a stone quarry by local home-builders.
In 1902 the bishop of Elne and Perpignan bought the ruins and started a pretty radical restauration. Some buildings were even added, to accomodate visitors. In 1922 a number of capitals could be bought back, that had once belonged to the cloister and "got lost" after the French Revolution.
Even if this is not "original" in many aspects, even if it may "lack some character", like some authors wrote, it is a wonderful complex, and as Marcel Durliat wrote, a church "premier art roman méridional", as it is older than most of the other romanesque buildings in Southern France.
This is the eastern part of the upper church, that is little younger than the western part, just like it is in the the lower church. This church is dedicated to St. Martin (of Tours). In old times churches only got dedicated to martyrs (and of course the Virgin). Martin of Tours was one of the first patron saints of churches, who was not martyred. He died a natural death (aged 81!) in 397.

L’abbaye Saint-Martin du Canigou (en catalan : Sant Martí del Canigó), est un monastère de moines bénédictins fondé au xe siècle par Guifred II comte de Cerdagne. Sise sur les hauteurs du petit village de Casteil, dans le département des Pyrénées-Orientales (66) en région Languedoc-Roussillon (France), elle fut supprimée — et ses moines chassés — lors de la Terreur en 1791, mais reprit vie au début du xxe siècle

Sunrise on the southern Pyrenees. I was quite taken aback on this morning when the high cloud above the Pyrenees turned vivid pink as the sun was rising.

Photo prise depuis la plage de Sainte-Marie. Le Canigou apparaît dans toute sa splendeur. Les palmiers sont bousculés par la tramontane.
Il est étrange d'être ainsi sur la plage et de pouvoir regarder les cimes enneigées de notre Canigou, au-delà des toits de la petite station balnéaire de Sainte-Marie.
C'est tout le paradoxe, et l'incroyable particularité, de mon département des Pyrénées-Orientales.
Vous pouvez, dans la même journée, aller skier à la montagne et redescendre vous baigner à la plage... à condition de ne pas être trop frileux bien sûr...
