L'abbaye Saint-Martin du Canigou (en catalan : Sant Martí del Canigó), est un monastère de moines bénédictins fondé au Xe siècle par Guifred II, comte de Cerdagne.
Sise sur les hauteurs du petit village de Casteil à 1055m, dans le département français des Pyrénées-Orientales (66) en région Occitanie (France), elle fut supprimée — et ses moines chassés — lors de la Terreur en 1791, mais reprit vie au début du XXe siècle. La communauté des Béatitudes y assure depuis 1987 le service de l'office divin.
L'église abbatiale est un résumé des premières expériences en Roussillon de l'art roman méridional à cette époque et un tournant majeur dans l'architecture. L'ensemble est classé au titre des Monuments historiques.

Je vous propose cette photo du Canigou vu depuis Port Leucate qui date de début mai. Il y avait encore de la neige !
Venant tout juste de quitter la petite gare de la Franqui, la Z7370 est vue assurant une relation TER entre Perpignan et Narbonne, peu après Leucate.
L'automotrice se reflète parfaitement bien dans l'étang au premier plan, témoignant ainsi d'une matinée calme, sans vent.

Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou.
Visitors, tackling a steep, half-hour climb from the parking area, come to make a pilgrimage—esthetic or spiritual—to this celebrated medieval abbey. It's one of the most photographed in Europe thanks to its sky-kissing location atop a triangular promontory at an altitude of nearly 3,600 feet. St-Martin du Canigou's breathtaking mountain setting was due, in part, to an effort to escape the threat of marauding Saracens from the Middle East. Constructed in 1009 by Count Guifré of Cerdagne, then damaged by an earthquake in 1428 and abandoned in 1783, the abbey was diligently (perhaps too diligently) restored by the Bishop of Perpignan early in the 20th century. The oldest parts are the cloisters and the two churches, of which the lower church, dedicated to Notre-Dame-sous-Terre, is the most ancient. Rising above is a stocky, fortified bell tower. Although the hours vary, Masses are sung daily; call ahead to confirm. Easter Mass here is especially joyous and moving.
Having reached the summit of Pico de Canigou it was time to wonder around and take in the views. This particular one looks towards my route of ascent which took me over the central left ridge (in shadow) before descending the central diagonal slope and then taking the entertaining scramble across the mid left pinnacles. What a great route that was. At over 9,100 feet in altitude this is the hill chosen by the Catalans as their point of focus in the Pyrenees.
When my son and I headed back to the French-Spanish border area in 2007 to fulfil an earlier promise to return if possible, we had a second 'target' in mind as well as our primary aim of completing the Carança gorge walk (see the Carança-Canigou album for these shots if you're interested).
This second target was Canigou, at 2785m/9137ft, the highest peak in the eastern Pyrenees and a mountain sacred to Catalans.
This is the Canigou massif seen from Fuilla, where we stayed for our short visit.

C’est la réfraction atmosphérique qui rend ce phénomène possible et n'est observable qu'à certaines conditions et dates bien déterminées.
L’observation de cette projection ne dure que quelques minutes, l’image n’a pas été retouchée et l’on peut apercevoir sous la montagne quelques traces du soleil sur l’horizon.

- It is a mirage because due to the curvature of the earth the Pyrénées-Orientales, 290 km away, are not visible from Bouches du Rhône.
It is atmospheric refraction that makes this phenomenon possible and it is only observable on certain conditions and specific dates.
The observation of this projection lasts only a few minutes, the image has not been retouched and you can see under the mountain some traces of the sun on the horizon.
