A quick snapshot of my senior girl Pearl at the vet. She has monthly checkups to make sure her cancer stays in remission.

UPDATE: Sadly, I lost Pearl to age related kidney failure on December 9, 2009. She survived cancer and remained in remission for six years. She was a fighter and lived a long life, living to be 19. 5 years

At Julie's 4th of July Cookout, these wonderful ladies shared so many memories from times past.

They do not mind if you know their ages, because each year is a badge of honor!

My Mom, Mary, on the right, is 77.

Our friend John's Mom, Ina, in the middle, is 85.

And Julie's Aunt Jane, on the left, is in her early 90s.

These Grand Old Ladies are all so special and unique!

My Mom also had a rare story to tell: she is a Pancreatic Cancer SURVIVOR! Hers was operable, and that was 13 years ago!

Look at Renee now! Isn’t she beautiful? She is so vibrant, in every aspect of her personality.

My Final Major Project this year is going to be a series of portraits of cancer survivors. Here is a self portrait which I did as a test shoot for this project.

I am a cancer survivor myself, and I would very much like to speak to others who have had to battle with the horrible disease. I'm hoping to shed a positive light in terms of hope, and remind people that Cancer is not necessarily a death sentence. My aim is to produce a book featuring a large group of portraits of cancer survivors, and tell some of their stories to the world through associated text. If you're not sure about about having your picture taken, please still get in touch as I would love to talk to you and explain a bit more about the project and answer any questions you might have.

I WILL travel to meet you, and the photographs would be something we can produce inside your home environments. PLEASE share this post with anyone you think would be interested, thankyou.

Dean is a cancer survivor I met on Colfax who wears a "Blessed" t-shirt. He likes to shoot with the disposable cameras around town. Be sure to say hi if you run in to him around town.

I will be adding a butterfly for every year of cancer survivorship.

I was working on the 2012 BCA Quilt Project with Mimi of Flickr

(who is really the brains and workhorse of the project -

www.flickr.com/photos/mimitalks/7758524878/in/contacts/ )

when I gave her 5 Breast Cancer Fighters and Survivors with Mary,

my Stranger #30 (below) among them to be put on one of my 5 quilt pieces.

Deciding that I needed to try to find an update on her as I just went through a very sad

emotional time just last week when I learned one of my other Strangers on Flickr, Jo'ne,

had lost her battle with Breast Cancer when I researched to find her for an update for the

BCA project... it truly broke my heart to learn Jo'ne had gone to be with her Lord & Saviour

Jesus Christ in January without me ever following up on her... as we have said before in

this project once you meet someone and talk to them and take their portrait you are now

friends and strangers no longer!!! But following up on Strangers can be a real challenge as

I don't normally take last names to reassure them and I don't ask for personal info such as

phone numbers or addresses. So to follow up may mean just retracing steps to see if you

can find someone who knows them or in Mary's case I met her on the street in front of her

house while traveling a backroad... duh!!! Problem is remembering which backroad where...

which for me with all my photo travels is a real challenge... ha ha!!! But the Good Lord helped

me and I did retrace my steps to her home and found her there and was able to get this lovely

portrait and great news that she is in remission and doing very well!!!
