In a new study from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, researchers found a higher than expected prevalence of cancer at baseline screening in individuals with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a rare inherited disorder that leads to a higher risk of developing certain cancers. The research demonstrates the feasibility of a new, comprehensive cancer screening protocol for this high-risk population.

This image is part of a representative image of a whole body MRI of an LFS patient. Arrow denotes lesion found to be lung adenocarcinoma.

New findings from a study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, show that U.S. incidence rates for aggressive subtypes of uterine cancer rose rapidly among women ages 30 to 79 from 2000 to 2015. The findings also reveal racial disparities, including higher incidence of these aggressive subtypes and poorer survival—irrespective of subtype and cancer stage—among non-Hispanic black women than among women in other racial/ethnic groups.

This image depicts HHV-8 Latency-Associated Nuclear Antigen (LANA) expression in an immunohistochemical (IHC) stain of a Kaposi sarcoma (KS) biopsy. The biopsy was obtained from the lymph node of a pediatric patient in Malawi. LANA is identified by dark red staining of the nuclei, and the LANA-negative nuclei are counterstained blue with hematoxylin. The KS cells display a classic spindle cell phenotype, with disruption of the lymph node architecture. Examination of IHC markers from patient samples allows us to correlate findings with clinical data and improve patient outcomes. 200X magnification.

Dr. Anita B. Roberts (1942 – 2006) was among the top 50 most-cited researchers for 20 years and a beloved mentor. Her work focused on the protein TGF-β, which is critical in healing wounds and bone fractures and can either block or stimulate cancer development. Roberts joined the National Cancer Institute, part of NIH, in 1976, becoming the chief of the Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis in 1995. The Anita B. Roberts Lecture Series was established in her memory to highlight outstanding research achievements by female scientists at NIH.

Creative photographers have long experimented with superimposing images, one over the other, to produce striking visual effects. Now a group of NIH-supported scientists at Houston Methodist Research Institute and their colleagues have done the same thing to highlight their work in the emerging field of cancer nanomedicine, using microscopic materials to deliver cancer treatments with potentially greater precision. In the process, the researchers generated a photographic work of art that was a winner in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology 2015 Bioart competition.

Sarah Stewart joined the National Institutes of Health from 1935-1944 while completing her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. In 1951 she returned to the National Cancer Institute at NIH. Stewart was the first to successfully demonstrate that viruses causing cancer could be spread from animal to animal. She is credited with discovering the Polyomavirus in 1953 along with Bernice Eddy. The SE (Stewart-Eddy) polyoma virus is named after their work..

The treated bacteria (right) grow at the same rate as the untreated, but do not divide, and, therefore, grow to relatively gigantic size

The countdown is truly on for the London Marathon. The tummy turns a little quicker whenever I think of April 13th but I know there is a very real reason and just cause that I am running for.

I'm working w/ the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) over the next year to help document and share their amazing stories of cutting-edge cancer research and treatment. I'm going to be photographing events, building a photo archives, creating patient and; doctor stories and other creative storytelling projects that arise. This weekend I attended the Swim Across America and The Pink Boat Regatta. I'll be back down next month to photograph the #PurpleStride marathon and a bunch of other cool community initiatives.

Swim Across America fills a void by providing vital seed funding to world-renowned hospitals that are investigating and conducting new clinical trials that lead to treatments and cures to defeat cancer. We host benefit swims as an opportunity to raise much needed money for our hospital partners conducting lifesaving research and clinical trials.

On Sunday 17th of February, Samuel Johnson arrived in Beaufort on the Ballarat to Beaufort leg of his round Australia ride, to raise $1million for cancer research.

A great turnout by the people of Beaufort to welcome Sam, even if he did have to "sing for his supper" and complete 3 challenges, to earn $1000 from the local branch of the Bendigo Bank. The final total raised for the night was around $2200.

More information about the ride can be found on the Love Your Sister website www.loveyoursister.org

Big shout out and thank you to Paula Hibbard | Nathan Yip | Janemary Manderson | Cythia and Chelsea from Royals Hair | Karolyn Polat | Courtney Williams | and my Partner Susana Montero La Unica Salon.

You all made the day run so smoothly by donating your expertise and time to a great charity event!

Additional thank you to Sandy Chong for connecting Youthworx Ahc to help with the call out. All the hair donated today will be collected by Sustainable Salons Australia and either be turned into wigs for children cancer suffers or hair booms.

It was also great to share with the large audience what a difference ethical salons are making in the community and environment!

St Andrews University student Jethro Dowell spent his 22nd birthday on Friday (February 18th) shaving his girlfriend's hair to raise funds for AICR.

And despite a captive audience in The Union TV room, he kept a steady hand and even managed the odd one-liner as he first cut, then shaved Naomi Brown's hair.

Naomi (21) had set a target of £300 for her fund-raising effort, but with money still coming in, she looks to be on track to raise much more.
