The month of pink - to show "we share because we care"
I recall my daughter had just graduated from college and was to be married within months. She found a lump in her breast. I remember the fear. This was my daugther, my little girl, and it scared me to death.
My future son-in-law (which is now my son-in-law) came to me and said "to heck with the wedding" we'll just go to the justice of the peace and get married. She was between changing insurances. We needed to make sure she was going to be taken care of -- "if". I knew at that moment he loved her more than words could describe. We both worked for the same company and spoke with the insurance administrator.
The day came for the testing. A lump was in our stomachs and in our throats of the "what if". Many many prayers. This was my child and it was to be the happy days of her life approaching.
The results were negative. That's when you get on your knees and say "thank you".
We spent some time at this year's Relay for Life that was organised to support cancer research and expand awareness.
Leukemia's support color is orange. It took me quite a while to find a pretty non-Swarovski bead for this design. And even so, I did use fire opal Swars in little 4 mm bicones. They frame the middle bead very nicely.

There is an exhibit currently on(July 2009) at The Forks called Cancer Connections. Included are photos and descriptions of many peoples stories around their cancer experience. The purpose appears two fold both cancer awareness and fundraising. This is a touring display currently here in Winnipeg. Can be found next in Saint John, New Brunswick. Then followed by Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia and lastly Saint John's, Newfoundland.

Italian soccer stars are coming to Baltimore to promote a cancer awareness program. A mini-clinic for pediatric patients and their families at Johns Hopkins Hospital will also be held following the announcement.

November is Men's Cancer Awareness Month, millions of men will be growing moustaches this month as a symbol of solidarity against this silent killer. I will be documenting my journey through a photograph every day. Please support your local Cancer Society. Together we can beat this thing.

13th year of cheer fun ;-) We featured a cancer awareness theme this year, with our t-shirts featuring a pink ribbon on the front and "Pink Cheerleader Ladies" on the back...added a $1 donation to the t-shirts and took up a change collection for pink ribbons during the game to benefit our Streaks Striking Against Cancer Relay for Life Team. Folks attending the game were encouraged to make it a "Pink Out" and our players even wore pink ribbon stickers on their helmets ;-) EVERYONE has been touched by cancer in some way, either directly or indirectly; hopefully, everyone tries to support cancer research towards a cure in some way, big or small--every little bit counts! The girls (and one boy) had a blast!! They were an awesome group!
